| | | Update I'm doing better, pre breakfast test today was 114, and it was 198
2 hours after lunch. I have cut down on my carbs and eating more
vegetables and meat. Before I became diabetic, I almost never ate
vegetables. They would always try to get me but I don't like them. Now
I will have to eat them for my health and because I get so hungry. I
could go for 3-4 slices of pizza but I know I shouldn't.
Mother got the papers from the school today and we got a referral
to an endocrinologist doctor from the base. I have an appointment for
next Wednesday after school.
I was running low on test strips and we didn't have time to go the
base to gem more so we bought some for the Accu-chex meter. I compared
the test with my QID meter and they were quite a bit different. the
Accu-chex was 135 and the QID was 147. Something might be wrong with
one of the meters.
I'm off to a sleepover at my girlfriends house tonight. We are
working on a school project together. I'll be taking my test meter and insulin pens with me. I can't wait to see what she does when I poke my
finger to get blood and inject my insulin.

you will come thru this diabetes and be healthier
than your peers are in another 20 years when age
has had a chance to 'injure' them silently
(meanwhile you keep an excellent diet/exercise
regime going)
i hope your friend isn't bothered by you testing
and shooting, but do try to either show her
everything if she's interested, or hide it from
her discretely if she appears to be aprehensive
about it

Actually your numbers aren't that much off. Keep in mind that meters are
not 100% accurate and those numbers are well within the acceptable range of
error. As for the pizza, you could have one slice and then the toppings
from another, along with a salad. |

feel free to have 2 slices of pizza with the crust
on both of them, Amber..... you may find that
splitting your insulin into 2 doses will meet the
pizza delayed peak effect better than 1 shot in
advance
and a salad is always a great idea (lots of dark
green leafy veggies) to go with that pizza you
have

I had 1 slice of pizza last night, I know I shouldn't have had it.
It was 4 hours after dinner and I was hungry and they ordered pizza. I
was going to test 2 hours but I forgot and didn't test until 3 1/2
hours. It was 293. I gook my Levemir and we talked most of the night.
When I got home this morning I tested 192 before I ate anything.
They were fixing waffles for breakfast, I injected my novolog and
only ate some sausage and an egg. My glucose was down to 128 after 2
hours. I hope the new doctor increases my insulin so I can eat more
because I am already hungry and only eating vegetables and meat almost
makes me sick.

Have you talked to your doc about going on a DAFNE (Dose Adjusted For
Normal Eating) course yet? The whole idea of it is that you can eat
what you want and know how to work out the right amount of insulin to
cover it - of course eating healthily is best, but the occasional
pizza fest can be enjoyed too.

I'm a T2 who is not on insulin. I eat pizza. I pay attention to how much I
eat & how often I eat it. I always eat thin crust now - and already it's now
my favorite kind, weird huh? <G> I make sure the pizza has both meat &
veggies on it - no more vegetarian pizzas for me. My favorite is Papa John's
thin crust with Pepperoni, fresh tomatoes & banana peppers, If I get
finished eating the pizza part of the piece & there's crust only leftover, I
no longer eat the crust.
So, I've made changes. I don't find those changes unbearable.
I do still fight hunger & I do still struggle with what to eat & how much &
when to eat it. I'm working on it.
How were your friends about your testing & injecting? Some curious &
interested & some ewwww about needles? I'm guessing here.

before they invented 'insulin' they used to keep
kids on starvation diets to allow them to live

They had the thick crust pizza. I've been told after I learn to
adjust my own insulin I can eat anything I want. I'm not sure that
goes for snacks, that would require another insulin injection.
My girlfriend acted kinda strange after I showed her how I test and
inject insulin. She treated me almost like I was a different person.
She needs to learn more about diabetes and so do I.

I have an appointment for next Wednesday after school to see the
endo. I could be eating more now but I don't want to get high glucose
tests. I got my e calorieking carbohydrate counterbook, it makes it
east to calculate the carbs and I an keep the records in my log book.
I hope the endo increases my insulin right away.

Sure, but it is still important to eat healthily. And, that's going to mean
some kind of balance. Whatever that balance is for you will be individual to
you. I was just describing a way I can still eat something I love (pizza) &
keep things balanced between protein, veggies & carbs. Things you work out
for you will be different. But, my big point was that you don't need to
think you're going to have to give up pizza forever, ya know?

Nothing personal Julie, but this is my main GRIPE with T2's especially not
on
insulin stating things to a newly diagnosed T1 teenager. Amber could have
very well have had 2-3 slices of pizza because she needs the extra carbs
because she's still growing and needs the food. Is it healthy? Who knows..
It has been said that pizza is the most healthy out of all fast food. Even
moreso,
Amber is a teenager and needs to be able to "fit" in... and eating pizza at
a
sleepover is fitting in. Her mental health needs cared for as well as her
physical health if not moreso imho. I just don't want Amber to think she
cannot
eat normally and fit in with her friends.
You are correct about the meter readings, so thank you for mentioning that
since no one else had.

People do get used to it... And, you would be truly surprised at how
many diabetics there really are out there who do understand, and for
each one of them, figure they have a number of family members who
understand....
I know, at first it may seem hard... But lots of people have to become
accustomed to things that seem difficult or awkward at first. Just
think of moms who have to find a way to nurse their infants when they
are travelling.... I should think that would be a big hurdle for some
women.... and yet, it is the most natural thing there is. For us,
testing is just what we have to do... Thank God that there are now
meters and test strips! only about 20-30 yrs ago, there were no such
things available.

This is a very important point Reisa and I'm glad you made it.
Growing up with diabetes is hard enough with all of the things one has
to do to try and lasso the roller coaster blood sugars. Small things
like eating pizza with friends can make one feel like they are not so
different after all. Besides, pizza gets a bad rap and really is a
pretty good food compared to many other fast foods.
Amazing how some of the posters in here who throw hissy fits when a T1
has anything to say about diet for a T2 are the ones who seem to jump
in and give medication advice to T1's...often times the wrong
advice.

I like pizza, and I enjoy it about once a week... As long as I do not
pig out, and limit myself to only 2 or 3 modest slices of thin crust
pizza, I do fine...
We cannot quit living... I have come to realize that quality of life
counts for something, also... The key is moderation and testing for
each individual to know what they can safely consume in the way of an
occasional pizza. Some T2s can safely indulge in pizza to a greater
extent than others. As Loretta often says, we are all different...
Even T1s are different, from what I can tell... We all have our own
individual responses to different dietary items.

Exactly Will... that is a perfect posting to help reassure a new young T1
that her life isn't over with and has to stop eating the things that she
likes
especially around her friends that would make them look at her a bit odd.
It's hard enough being a teenager, lord knows they don't need anything else
to throw a monkeywrench in to upturn it even more.

Well, I was a teenager once who didn't eat pizza. My friends always tried
to get me to eat it but I never liked the stuff. I only started eating
it...or I should say trying to eat it when I married an Italian. I still
don't like it.
And don't forget, my own daughter is allergic to 7 different foods. Regular
pizza is something she'll never have, barring some miracle that makes those
food allergies go away. Alas her class has monthly pizza parties. So I am
reminded all too often about the "fitting in" thing when I have to make from
scratch, a gluten and dairy free pizza for her lunch. |

I was a teen with a weight problem adn there was no diet soda at that
time. That is why I learned to drink black coffee(no calories) so I cul
dhave something that wasn't childish with all the kids. I envier those
having soda or milkshakes or etc., but, at least I wasn't regarded as
either a baby or something weird.
The weight wasn't obese, just chunky, but I was wanted to be a ballet
dancer at the time and was studying intensely.

I understand what you are saying... but I'd also have to say that being
an overweight teen and wanting to lose a bit of weight and not wanting
to eat certain things is quite a bit different then being a new diabetic as
a teenager, and having that hanging over your head... I'm just seeing
things a bit differently.... Even as an adult diagnosed, after I told a few
of my friends, I know how things changed.

My teen hates it too - but enjoys all the components : ) I make three
pizzas about once a month; a full-carb one for hubby and kid #2, a
low-carb one for me, and a base, a bowl of sauce, and a plate with
sliced toppings for kid #2...

Before I was a diabetic type 1 I ate lunch at school every day. I
had pizza 2 days a week as an option instead of the plate lunch.
Almost nobody gets the plate lunches the other 3 days I had hamburgers
and French fries as an option. Now that I am taking a look at my diet,
it was as bad as could be. I never ate vegetables, for breakfast I had
toaster pastries or coffee cake and I like coffee with lots of cream
in it. If we had vegetables at supper I usually didn't eat them. My
mother has to watch her diet to keep from gaining weight but I could
always eat anything I wanted and always stayed slim.
I am getting the idea that it will be impotent to eat a balanced
diet because I am diabetic. It will be hard to break the habit of
eating almost all junk food. I really like Mexican food and we would
stop and get rolled tacos and eat them at Smoothie King with a large
smoothie.
Exercise is another thing I see mentioned a lot. I'm not lazy but I
never get much exercise. The little I get is in PE class and walking 3
blocks to school. This diabetes is changing everything in my life
maybe good to eat a better diet but bad that I can't do what my
friends do. About the only thing I have left is a Latte at Starbucks.

Amber...
Look at it this way, you're getting a head start at keeping your body
healthy. Your friends will get the message, but just a few years down
the road. You'll be ahead of the game!
And you can still DO all the things your friends do... you just can't
eat all the things your friends eat, at least not all the time ; )
From your posts, I think you've got a great chance of handling this all
fabulously. You'll be fine. I promise, it does get easier!

A side comment to that. Quentin is probably aware that I was
ruefully watching the cricket last night as New Zealand beat
Australia - again. Yeah, I know - what's cricket got to do
with it, (the game, not that little bug:-)
Well, it's a sport that demands a very high level of fitness
and agility. The guy that almost single-handedly humbled
the Aussies, supposedly the best team in the world until
last night, was Craig McMillan.
