| | | Way OT - Tomato Plant Question How do I keep squirrels away from my tomato plants? This is my first time
growing, and I am having good results until now. They are in buckets, and
doing great, except now for the squirrels. I don't really want to use
pesticides, but I heard something about moth balls...how does that work, or
any suggestions?
Thanks,

What are the squirrels doing to your tomato plants?
Have you contacted a garden center or the Master Gardner in your area?
I have raised tomatoes for at least 45 years and I have never seen a
squirrel bother one at all.

Well, for starters, you can't really keep squirrels out if they want to eat
something. Are they actually eating the tomatoes? Or just digging in the
dirt?
My philosophy is to feed them and hopefully keep them away from where I
don't want them. They love fresh corn. Sometimes I'll toss out a couple of
ears of corn. Or a handful of shelled nuts. Giving them nuts in the shell
sort of defeats the purpose because they will bury them, most likely in your
buckets. I've tried dried corn. They are supposed to like that but they
don't seem to. |

Kris, pesticides for squirrels? I haven't had the problem with mine,
yet... but if I do, I'll probably surround the plants with a column of

Around here, the squirrels act quite resentful if I plant things in
their deck planters. They seem to be especially fond of lettuce
seedlings, but arugula is too bitter for them. I eat a lot of arugula in
the early springtime.

I was told squirrels don't like daffodils since the bulbs and foliage
are poisonous. I've heard that Fritillaria imperialis (another bulb) and
Alliums (onion family) repel squirrels.

I had to keep calling the cable company because ours would become detached.
We had a problem with a rat, we have raccoons, possums and at one point a

Aha! So perhaps surround the lettuce with arugala?
Perhaps the reason my veggies remain untouched...except for having to
replant the cukes three times due to slugs, is that I have onions planted
around the edge of most of the boxes? I learned this trick years ago and it
keeps away most pests. They don't like the onions. |

A friend of mine got squirrels in her attic. She was told to put mothballs
where they were. The little blighters threw them out! I don't know how she
finally got rid of them. Sorry, I can't offer something worth while.

No squirrels in New Zealand, but it is nice to know that there is a
garden problem that I don't have. Australian possums are a terrible
pest and European rabbits are hard to control, but no squirrels! I
guess we didn't introduce every pest animal after all. I saw squirrels
when I was in Philodelphia and I thought that they looked cute but my
sister-in-law called them 'tree rats'.

They do now. I was simply pointing out there are solutions to either
get rid of them or to keep them away from areas they are not wanted.

How many more Americans must die to satisfy Bush's ego?

Encourage feral cats. That's how I semi-accidentally solved my squirrel
problem -- I started feeding some feral cats who were hanging out, and
now we have a small established colony. I haven't had a squirrel in my
attic or taking little bites out of tomatoes since. Of course I'm
paying for extra cat food, and I've got a heated water dish for winter,
and I provide some warm space for them when it's cold, but it's worth it
to see then snoozing on the patio or washing their faces in the sun,
spending their retirement years in relative safety and comfort, as every
cat should be able to do.

You sure it was a rabbit? I live in the city and I have a resident
woodchuck.

It's the smell of mothballs that will deter *some* varmints, but one
needs to be aware that they *are* poisonous, and I wouldn't want to have
them possibly leaching into the soil in which I'm growing edibles.

I know that moth balls repel some rodents, but the only tomato plants I
have are in an EarthBox on my patio and the smell would repel me, too!
OTOH, if I wanted to use them, I guess they could sit on top of the
plastic cover, avoiding leaching into the soil.
So far, squirrels haven't touched my maters; only the cherry ones are
ripening.

I am the adventurous type and have tried things like squirrel and other
meats.
Surprisingly squirril tastes like a prime rib roast..at least way i had it.
Didnt much like rabit as it was greasy to me.
Hated frogs legs which smeeled like swamp..ick..same for alligator.
If its dead and cooked ill trying it once..lol..learned that i love calamari
and alot of things i wouldnt expect to.
All time favorite game meat is buffalo..love the stuff.
