Hb is for hemoglobin

A1c is the designation given this particular glycoprotein to distinguish
it from others.

From the m.h.d. FAQs:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes/faq/part2/

"Hb = hemoglobin, the compound in the red blood cells that
transports oxygen. Hemoglobin occurs in several variants;
the one which composes about 90% of the total is known as
hemoglobin A.

A1c is a specific subtype of hemoglobin A. The 1 is actually
a subscript to the A, and the c is a subscript to the 1.

"Hemoglobin" is also spelled "haemoglobin", depending on
your geographic allegiance.

Glucose binds slowly to hemoglobin A, forming the A1c
subtype."

More details on the link.

I had my first A1C this week.

Diagnosed last November as "late onset type 1"

It was 5.9

I don't know what the number means, but Dr. Bloodbath seemed to be
satisfied with it.

That's a great number! Many folks struggle to reach the 5% value.

I am only aware of hemoglobin A1a, A1b and A1c.
The measure of the HbA1c is the one that binds best
to glucose. It is a good meaure to tell the Doc about
how one is doing overall in controlling BG.
