Sorry you're unhappy. Some comments from my viewpoint:
1. We are afflicted with Chung and his enemies. I wish they would go
away; I also wish for Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men with about the
same expectations. This is Usenet; you take what you get.
Lurk on misc.health.alternative or talk.militia a bit and you will come to
regard the diabetes newsgroups as a breath of fresh air.
2. Diabetes is a deadly disease. I don't know when I will die but I know
that the odds favor me dying from diabetes complications; i.e. most likely
a premature heart attack. Trying to figure out how to not-die when the
odds favor premature death prompts heated discussion.
3. ". . . .I hope that any newly diagnosed person that comes here looking
for advice is able to see the bullshit fairly soon and realize that they
need to look elsewhere. . . ."
Sorry, but I disagree strongly with that. My experiences in this
newsgroup over the last 6 years coupled with my attendance at all the
Diabetes Expos and all the Diabetes Support Group meetings in my city and
the next one over convince me that the majority of diabetes care worldwide
is poor; rating a C- at best.
Endocrinologists are the pro's in diabetes care but they are spread so thin
that their impact on the bulk of diabetes therapy is just not what it ought
to be.
However, the posters to the diabetes newsgroups have seen the best and
worst of diabetes medical care worldwide. They read the latest medical
literature (we are still digesting the 2006 ADA Convention papers). If
you stick around long enough, you will be exposed to the newest and best of
the diabetes therapies.
Reading these newsgroups in 2000 made me aware that I had been using an
old-fashioned, crappy
insulin regime. Based on my discussions with
posters to this group, I pressured my doctor to switch me to a more modern
regime I actually obtained some modern insulin and explored a new regime
even before approaching him. I was able to work my way through the new
regime because of interactions with people on this group. The changeover
from old-fashioned crappy to modern has allowed me to keep my HbA1c below 6
ever since.
The NHANES U.S. diabetic average HbA1c is about 7.75. Mine varies between
5.6 and 5.7. That level of success is directly attributable to these
newsgroups.
