Default what IS it with these damned spammers!

Google groups used to do a good job of preventing spam.

Now all the groups are loaded with it every day.

Rotten spammers!

It used to be that Road Runner, your news service was the worst source
of newsgroup spam on the planet, now thanks to gmail/blogspot and
google's all out greed, Google has become it's own worst enemy.

What program are you using to read the newsgroups?

If it gives you the option to report spammers, try that;
groups-abuse@google.com
doesn't appear to pay attention when I report spam, but maybe they'd pay
more
attention to someone sending through the gmail.com part of their company.

I suspect that someone in their abuse department has quit his or her job,
not
leaving enough people there to handle the increasing number of spammers
who post through Google Groups.

By the way, there's now a way to killfile spammers if you're reading the
newsgroups through Google Groups, but it requires you to install and
use a rather uncommon browser program. Let me know if you want the
details.

Firefox is rather uncommon?!!! That's news to me. <G>

The instructions on how to KF in Google Groups that Mack posted not long ago
is superb in how clear & well written it is. I poached it to offer
elsewhere. And, I think he poached it from the person who wrote the script.

The person I poached it from had his named included in my post and in
your last quote of it here in this group.

Subject: For those using Google Groups

1 Install firefox which you can get from the Mozilla site.
This is to
be able to get the extension you need.
2 Install the Greasemonkey extension( get it from

3 Get the Google Groups killfile script from
http://www.penney.org/google-groups-...updated-2.html
and load
it using greasemonkey.
4 When you browse and see a thread/post by anyone you dislike
simply click the new 'ignore user' link in the thread and all

You'll need to manually add people who have apostrophes in

I hope you saw that I reposted them in a thread of their own last night
right after you posted, asking. HTH. And, basically, it is an excellent
version to pass along! Thanks to Mack for making it available here.

But if you're going to download and install something,
why not make it a real newsreader?

Good. Now let's see how many entries in your killfile you need.
I have over 1500 so far, but I've been adding them for months
and don't have a good way to prevent duplicare entries.

What do you suggest? I don't have newsgroups from my internet
provider (if I did, I could use Outlook Express), and I don't want to
pay for newsgroups.

Try:-

news.tornevall.net/

It's a free news server, open by invitation which you can ask for on the
website.

The guy runs it as a hobby in Sweden, so it can be a bit flaky now &
again, especially at European peak times. If you're in the USA, your
times are a few hours adrift, so your peaks shouldn't match his peaks,
if you see what I mean.

If you're in the Firefox fold, then Thunderbird is not *too* bad a way
to read news, & it's the right price.

There are others, just google for free news server.

If you only want the text-only newsgroups, there are a number of free
newsgroups providers. Here's one I've read is one of the better ones:

Well, there are still a few free Usenet access providers. But, the real
bargain is the (text groups only but all text groups) German server that
many of us have used for years. Before so many USA ISPs dropped their Usenet
service, they used to be free, period. But, now they charge a nominal annual
fee. One year it worked out to 12 dollars US, another year 14 dollars US,
etc. I'm not sure exactly what it would be this second because of the
exchange rate. But, they really cover text newsgrous. Rarely do they miss
posts. They are quick in getting & sending posts. They are reliable. They
used to keep the spam almost completely down but now it seems like no one
can keep up entirely & users definitely need kill file abilities more
because of it.

Here's that info in case you want it:

The German news server: http://news.individual.net/

Go there & sign up & arrange payment & you'll get an email with info like
this:

You will need a piece of software - a newsreader. You will plug values into
it where the info it wants as to your server/provider, username, password,
etc.

Then, it will be blank, ready software & you will have to get a list of all
the newsgroups your provider offers.

Then you will subscribe to the ones you want.

(You'd have done almost all of this with AOL in the past, but they just
wouldn't have called things by their right names, etc. so it would do you no
good ... like, now.)

It's billed in Euros at the interbank rate on the day you pay. 10 Euros
plus any commission your bank charges, so about USD 16 or 17 a year at
the moment. Apparently, the Click'n'Buy option for payment is currently
broken, but I believe they can accept payment by Paypal.

Excellent service, very good backup. I recently changed from the
Tornevall.net free server to Individual.

Well, I see you have plenty of newsserver suggestions.

For a reader, I like Thunderbird. Outlook works, but
it's not ideal. Though it does make "block sender"
slightly easier than Thunderbird.

Agent doesn't cost much, and does a few things that
Thunderbird doesn't. But I _really_ like the
price of Thunderbird.

Does anyone have a kf solution that works with Agent?

It is becoming difficult to find genuine new comers whom I'd like to

G'day Quentin,

I suggest we chose a board, or tribunal, who will examine the credentials of
every new poster to determine whether she or he is suitable to post and who
deserve our help.

Needless to say, I don't want to be part of that board........

Take a look at nfilter at http://www.nfilter.org

It will work with most, if not all newsreaders because it sits in
between the newsreader and port 119 (or whatever port you have
configured for reading news).

It's very simple to install. All you need do is tell your newsreader
to talk to "localhost" instead of your ISP, and then tell nfilter to
talk to your ISP.

Example using Agent and supernews:
Under Options->User and System Profile->System I had
"news.supernews.com". I changed that to "localhost". I then ran
nfilter and under Edit->Configration->Network, I changed Server Name
to "news.supernews.com". You can then hide nfilter and use Agent in
the same way as usual.

Setting up filters is a little more tricky. For best results, it
requires some knowledge of regular expressions. There are lots of
examples and tutorials around, though.

When you set up filters, you have the choice of just flagging them or
dropping them altogether. You can flag them permanently, which will
allow you to spot the bad ones easily, or just while testing your
regular expressions, then changing to "drop" when you have it right.

Here are a couple of examples:

Subject: Wholesale Movado-0605012 Cheapest

is flagged by the entry

* flag:[SPAM] from:.*@aaa-replica-watch.com

or dropped by the entry

* drop from:.*@aaa-replica-watch.com

You can also make filters that are specific to a newsgroup...

alt.support.diabetes flag:[TWIT] from:.* rk *

As well, you can filter of things that Agent can't, like crossposting
from specific newsgroups.

Anyway, it's free, though no longer supported by its author.
If you decide to start using it, I'd be happy to supply some filters
for the nfilter.dat file that work for me.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention; the "flag:" entry above will result in your subject
line in Agent's header window looking like this:

[SPAM] Wholesale Movado-0605012 Cheapest

I like to use flags that indicate the "testing" status, like:

[SPAM-?], or [TROLL-MAYBE]

That way, I can easily check to see if the filter is working the way I
expect it to, or in the case of a [TROLL] or a [TWIT], I can check to
see if it was a one-time aberration or not. It's then real easy to
change the "flag:" to a "drop".

Oh, and the other use for the "flag:" is to highlight a poster you
want to read. I have you flagged with a reminder that is easier to
notice than the "from" entry in the header window.

Lately, I've been seeing fewer spammers than usual. But there
are also fewer other messages than usual, so I don't know
whether it's because my newsgroups server has problems,
or because groups-abuse@google.com finally does enough
to discourage the spammers if you keep on sending then
copies of the spam with all headers for at least a month.

G'day G'day Oleg,

Firstly thank you for understanding my request. I find I have to be
very careful deleting posts for replica Rolex watches making sure I
don't also accidentally delete relevant posts.
