Default What's your metformin dosage?

I'm currently on Glucovance (Glyburide + Metformin) and I may talk to
my doctor about switching to just Metformin. I've read that 1500 mg is
kind of like a minimum dosage to get a reasonable benefit in lowering
bg.

I'd like to ask the type 2's here, what dosage you take of Metformin,
do you combine it with other bg lowering drugs, slow or regular style.

Thanks, Just trying to get an idea of what's typically taken when
taking Metformin alone.
Thanks,
ed

I take 1000mg of metformin daily, split in a morning and evening dose.
Doc has resisted my request to raise the dosage.

I also take 1 tab of 2 mg avandia daily and 2 60mg tabs of starlix.

FWIW - I was diagnosed in June 2005 - had FBG ~300 and A1C ~11. Doc put me
on metformin ER 3x500. I also started exercising and diet mods. Last fall,
FBGs started inching up - I'm now on metformin ER 4x500 plus avandia and
we seem to be holding the line.

I take the regular Metformin, 2,500 mg daily in split doses. Also take
split doses of Amaryl.

Ed, everyone is so different. I'm on time released Metforim 1000 once a
day.

Do hope you get what works best for you soon.

I take 1500 mg daily. 500 right before breakfast and 1000 before dinner.

My A1c at dx was 9.5, 3 mos. 5.6, 6 mos. 5.6 and 9 mos. (just done this
week) 5.7. I pushed the envelope this past 3 mos. so I'll back off a bit
since it went up slightly.

I take 2000mg of extended-release metformin a day, split into morning and
bedtime doses. I also take 5mg extended release glipizide in the morning,
and I inject 10mcg of Byetta twice a day.

At one time, I was taking 10mg of extended-release glipizide once a day, but
with the addition of Byetta and subsequent weight loss, I was having too
many hypos. I talked to my doctor about decreasing the glipizide, and she
prescribed 5mg. That worked fine for several months. Lately I've been
experiencing more hypos, so I think it's time to ask for a prescription for
the 2.5mg strength. I'm hoping to discontinue the glip altogether in the
very near future.

Eddie: I take Amaryl (4mg/d) and Metformin regular (2000mg/d) plus
Actos (30 mg/d). Both are split doses. I am seeing better bg readings
since adding on Amaryl several months ago. I don't think Actos did
anything for me so far as bg levels and want to at least cut the dose
to 15 mg/d. It will be interesting to see what your bg levels do if
you stop taking glyburide. Since I started taking metformin
immediately when diagnosed with a high A1c and started "low carbing"
at the same time, I am still not sure how much improvement can be
attributed to metformin vs eating less carbs since I have never been
overweight. Good luck.

I started on 850mg X 2 when I was diagnosed ... a1c was 14+.

I now have good control with 500mg x 2 and a
healthy lifestyle. I am considering lowering my
doseage. If I thought metformin was harmful
I would have already tried it but I think of it more
as friend than foe :-)

cheers

I'm on 2000mg XR daily, plus diet & exercise with varying levels of
discipline. Last A1c 5.7, but gardening season starts soon, and that
almost always boosts my exercise level.

Why? 1500mg daily is generally viewed as the therapeutic threshold.
Any reason why he doesn't want you to go higher?

The only thing I'm taking is 1500 Metformin HCL 750 mg and my A1C is
6.2.

As a side note; about two years ago I had been taking metformin (1000
mg) for about a year when I started developing double vision. It got
so bad that when I looked at a car about 150 yards away there were two
cars with enough room between them to drive the third car in between.
Now this problem wasn't too bad when I was looking at an attractive
woman but it did get to be a pain.

I went to the ophthalmologist and he couldn't find anything wrong and
suggested that I have a prism put in my classes which we did in the
beginning. But as a problem worsened he couldn't figure out what to
do so he sent me to a neurologist.

Long story short, through blood tests he determined I was completely
depleted of vitamin B12 causing neurological problems mainly with my
eyes.

Immediately after a series of B-12 injections the double vision
disappeared! But no one can tell me why I had a B-12 deficiency until
I did a side effects search and found out that about 11% of those
people on metformin come up with a vitamin B12 deficiency to one
extent or another. I now have to inject myself about once every two
weeks to maintain the proper B-12 in my system.

My GP, the ophthalmologist, the neurologist and I got a little bit of
an education.

I hope this might help someone?

I take 1000mg and I'm considering upping it to 1500mg to
"tweak" my numbers.

I read about the vitamin B depletion here before starting on
metformin a couple of years ago and I've been taking either
a B12 or multi-B tablet daily since I started on metformin.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Larry,

Sounds like we're similar. I'm not overweight, diagnosed a year ago at
11.2%, went lo carb and glucovance and got down to 6% very quickly.
I'm just concerned about the glyburide for the long term. Does it burn
out your beta cells faster? Who knows. My NP seems to be worried
about high doses of Metformin which I don't understand. I think she's
a little confused and I'm going to try to educate her a bit or at least
push her to check her facts.

I have been making one change every 3 months between A1C testing and
lipid testing to try to isolate what's doing what. This period I
dropped lipitor to see if lo carb is keeping my lipids under control.
Thanks to everyone for replying and giving me some ground to stand on
when I go see the doc, next time.
Ed

I also read about the possible B12 deficiency. Maybe I'll ask if I can
have that checked at the next blood work before I ask about upping my
Metformin.

Priscilla. Sounds like your doing great. I was at 5.9% then went up
to 6.1% last time, but I know I get less exercise in the winter months
and then their was Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Do you take your 2000mg all at once or divided?

I won't care that you are there to see me. And when you die, it wont
matter that you take 1000 because someone else that is taking 2000
will go to your funeral.

Up until recently I was taking 1500mg of Glucophage MR (metformin mr)
alongside Lantus and Novorapid but in the UK here metformin is not licensed
tp be taken with Levemir so when I swapped to Levemir instead of lantus I
was taken off the metformin !!

Excuse me ??

It is not licensed alongside Levemir in the UK !!
Only a consultant can over-ride it and prescribe it as an "Off-label" or off
license prescription !!

It is not nonsense - I was taken off Metformin when I swapped to levemir as
it is NOT licensed to be taken with/alongside Levemir !!
