Default You can go back to Subway

The other day, Subway, my daily lunch stop. was out of wraps. I ordered my 6
inch on Whole Wheat and ask her to dig most of the bread out of the bun. I
tested one hour after lunch and got a 116 as opposed to a 194 with the
intact bun. Same thing today but got a 103... even better. Tastier than the
wrap - feels like a regular people sandwich. Maybe, with that little trick,
you can go back to Subway.

I can't. I don't like their food. I used to get the 6" sub with either
tuna or cheese. I could do it. It didn't spike me. But I was always
hungry after I ate it. And now with my food allergies I think the only
thing safe for me to eat is potato chips.

I just scrape out the guts of any roll when I get a sandwich at a deli,
be it Subway or anywhere else. I prefer to remove the bread myself so I
know the job is done right.

Good idea! I might try that! Low carb wraps never made it over here,
so I haven't been in there for ages except to buy my kids a
sandwich...

I've been known to simply toss the bun, or at least the top and eat it
'open face'.

Hi, John --

A few years ago, Subway would make any sub as a salad -- don't they do
that anymore? Then you don't have any bread to deal with at all?

I've been doing that for years, at various Subway branches.

They also have (at least at the one I go to at the outlet mall) a 4" "mini"
that I've ordered when 6" (with or without all the bread) was more than I
wanted to eat.

John occasionally I go to Subway I dont do the wraps much because to me
they are tasteless. I get the multi grain and I eat one half of the
bread, but I like your idea of scooping it all out. I am going to try
it.

When I was in Las Vegas I discovered Subway offered that option. They put
down a bed of lettuce and any of the amendments you want on a medium plate
then the meats and cheeses you prefer. Great with vinegar and oil. They also
offer that here in western Washington. If I have to eat out, that's high on
my preferences list. Some locations may charge a bit over the equivalent
sandwich price, many don't.

Here they always scoop the bread out before they make your sandwich. I've
always wondered what they do with the insides.

Maybe they use it for some sort of bait, fish food, or just throw it
to the ducks :-)

Going back to Subway, assumes that you were ever there. I've never
eaten a Subway sandwich, since I used to prefer Togo's. :-)

Yeah, ToGo's is definitely better tasting than Subway in my opinion.
I still love no. 20, the veggie sandwich, sigh. Can't eat all the
bread anymore though without a spike. Not to mention the side of
chips :-)

Subway is a better choice calorie and carb wise for me though because
they custom make the sandwich in front of you, and they have a lot of
vegetable choices, and they give the nutrition info.

True Ric, but I would just as soon make my own sandwich these days. If
my numbers are decent, I use two slices of Delightful White, and the
all of the fillers. If not, I skip the bread altogehter. Actually,
anymore, I don't get sandwiches from anyone. I make my own. :-)

That is what I do. I also skip the sub-sauce and salt and pepper. I peel
off and discard bread as I go along. It may not look nice to others, but
it works for me.

I think those wraps have about 20 grams of carbs in the wrap. At least this
is what the info on abag of whole wheat tortillias says

The Subway at the mall near here does that too, for a small surcharge.
So now my two "favorite" lunch places at the mall is Subway for a
salad, or the deli-thing for a falafel wrap.

I haven't been to a Subway for a few years, but I used to go there.
What they would do around here is scoop out a long wedge-shaped chunk
of bread lengthwise out of the sub roll (with the broad part of the
wedge at the top of the roll, and the pointy end deep inside the
roll). They would fill the scooped-out roll with your ingredients of
choice, and then sort of smush the wedge-shaped piece back on the top
of the fillings.

I just checked the bag of low wheat, no fat, low carb (Tortilla
Factory) flour tortillas I bought recently and they have 11 gr of carb
in a 36 gram tortilla. I don't know what Subway uses, but out here
they print all the nutrient info on the napkin you get with your
sandwich. I think their wrap (wrap only) is around 10-15 carbs.

According to www.subway.com
They have 33 grams of carbs for a plain wrap.

They all used to do that but then stopped some years ago. I'm not a big fan
of Subway and I always hated the idiot way they cut the bread. I guess
other people did too, since they now do it normally. I always got a regular
sandwich and counted the carbs. Or I'd go to Blimpies. Bigger sandwiches,
which also meant more carbs/calories, but at least it tastes good.

Last time I went to Subway had to be at least two years ago, because it was
right before I got my insulin pump. My BG dropped really low and I fell
down in the store while I was trying to place my order. I actually managed
to get up and order (with difficulty) as people kept trying to get me to sit
down. Of course I didn't. I don't know how I made it the 2 1/2 blocks back
to work, but I remember hugging the sides of buildings to make it. When I
got to work I stopped at the top of the stairs (my office is in the
basement) and sat down and started eating.

I'm very weird with low blood sugar. After a really bad low I can remember
every little detail of it, although at the time I'm not thinking clearly at
all. I've had only one bad low where I couldn't remember anything that
happened before. That was at home, alone, and was very scary.

Maybe that last low at Subway has kept me away, but I think it's more the
fact that I dislike their food.

Huh, I'm surprised. I guess the wrap is lower calorie, but not
especially low carb. They should switch to the Tortilla Factory
ones....although these taste like card board in my opinion. Anyway,
I'm sticking with the bread roll and just eating half!

I didn't realize they stopped scooping out the bread. At the ones I went
to, they didn't put that wedge of bread back on the sandwich, leaving me to
wonder what they did with it.

We used to have a Blimpies here. It's gone now but we ate there a few times
before I learned of my food allergy. I'd always get the tuna salad.
Daughter would get a kid's meal and a fruit salad. The only problem with
the kid's meal was the giant cookie that came with it. Who needs a giant
cookie? And I don't think there was any way to get that small sandwich on
its own. So what we wound up doing on a few occasions was getting takeout
for the entire family and then everyone would just split the cookie.
Sandwiches were often slit as well, but in my family few of us like the same
things so that was kinda difficult.

How horrid!

I'm pretty much the same way. There have been times when I go into the
kitchen for food then forget why I went in there. I will be upset and
crying, doing anything and everything but eating. I'll wash dishes, clean
out the fridge, go through the cupboards looking at expiration dates, etc.
Only when I stumble across the candy will I figure out why I went in there.
I eventually quit keeping my candy in the kitchen. Now I keep some next to
my computer, in my purse and in my car.

I must say I'm not much of a fan of sub sandwiches, or any sandwiches
really, but I never got anything at Subway that I really liked. All I can
remember is the bread and the lettuce and very little else. When I worked
at K Mart, we had a "deli" where we sold ham or ham and cheese sandwiches
done on small hamburger type buns, subs and super subs. If I recall
correctly, both had small amounts of ham and cheese, lettuce, tomatoes,
onions and mustard. Maybe pickles. The super version was bigger. We sold
a lot of them because they were cheap. At closing time they became even
cheaper. Often being sold for something like 25 or 33 cents a piece. When
they got this cheap, I'd buy a bunch of them for my dad or later on, my
boyfriend. They'd throw out all but one of the buns and stuff all the meat
and veggies into one bun. I didn't much like them because I hate ham and
mustard, but the veggies were always fresh and good so sometimes I'd get
lucky and get there as they were making them. I'd have them make me one
with just cheese and veggies.

Just tell them to gut out all the ingredients too...and then you have
a bread shell alone.

Obvoiusly you havent tried it yet, no real taste just a little crunch. Last
time someone said ICK to me I was telling thenm about a salad I make that
has OKRA in it. Made one for my daughters girls scout banquet. Along with
the okra, it had raw corn, squash and eggplant along with more usual salad
ingredients put together in a layered salad. First time I have ever seen
peole go back for seconds on salad.
