    I'm familiar with Trader Joe's Greek style yogurt and Fage Greek yogurt.
    My local Whole Foods has started to carry another brand as well:

    For the best and healthiest yogurt you ever had with a gazaillion
    healthygut bacteris

    1 quart or liter cow or goat's milk
    1/2 cup plain commervial yogurt..


    In a saucepan over medium heat: bring milk to the simmer stage 180F.
    use a thermometer. Cover with a tea toel and allow to cool 15 minuets.
    Set pot in a few inches of cold water in the sink until
    temperaturedrops to 77 F. In a bowl , place the commercial yogurt and
    a half cup of the milk. Stir until smooth. Addremaining milk. replace
    oven lightbilb with a 60 watt bilb and leave yogurt covered with a
    dish or plastic wrap in oven for 24-28 hours. Refrigerate for 8 hrs.
    or overnight.

    For thicker yogurt drip through cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter

    This will result in lactose free yogurt.

    I finally tried Fage's greek yogurt (finally found it in a local standard
    grocery store without having to make a special trip to a specialty whole
    foods) and its pretty darned good.

    I bought a yogurt maker last year. It has 8 individual cups. I've had
    mixed results with it. My first batch was pretty good but others didn't set
    up at all, or some came out okay and others were still basically milk. I
    don't recommend getting a yogurt maker with individual cups.

    Your non-machine method sounds very easy but my oven doesn't have a light.
    I'd like to try making my own again but my maker is such a pain.

    I buy Trader Joe's brand of Greek style yogurt since it's so much cheaper
    than Fage. When my supermarkets have a sale on quarts of plain, nonfat
    yogurt for $2 or less I buy that and strain it myself. A quart yields about
    the same volume as the Trader Joe's container, and is cheaper, and just as
    good.

    I always wondered why the Greek/strained yogurt was lower calorie & lower in
    carbs than regular plain yogurt. I guess that all goes out in the whey.

    Okay, I'll give it another try. The last time I attempted it, the only
    yogurt I had to use as a starter was fat free Greek (Fage) yogurt. That was
    the batch that didn't thicken at all, so I'm wondering if strained yogurt
    can't be used to start a new batch.

    Liz use plain Danone as a starter. After your milk is heated you can
    strain the milk with a sterile strainer when adding it to the
    starter. After it is set in the fridge you can stir it. I don't bother
    and don't mind if it is a little "lumpy."

    It doesn't look like it has as much protein in it as Fage.

    Have you tried it yet? Which is your favorite of the three?

    Of the two TJ's yogurts, I slightly prefer Fage & DH slightly prefers
    TJ's brand. We generally buy TJs as it's a fair bit cheaper and DH
    eats more than I do.

    yeah, its just not easy to find around here. As it is, when I finally
    found a store that carried it, they had 2 containers on the shelf, so I
    bought one for a trial. It just so happens to be one of the grocery stores
    I rarely go into. (Sweetbay) because they traditionally just don't carry as
    much of what I like. (Even on my lean cuisine lunches I keep on hand at
    work, they do not carry the sandwhiches I like).

    The TJ's brand doesn't seem as creamy. The texture is not as smooth and
    seems a little more sour to me. But it's so much cheaper.

    We have an over-abundance of grocery stores here, but it seems like I have
    to shop 3 different stores to get everything that I consider to be a basic
    staple. I mean, I have adopted a much more diverse way of eating over the
    recent years, but I can't see why they don't have one store that carries
    everything.

    Its the same for us around here. Heck there are certain things I like to
    get that I can only get at Walmart Supercenter. And I consider it standard
    everyday kind of stuff too. Like the fig newton bars we like, the ones
    that have the two long bars in the individual wrapped packages. They are
    great for DS's lunches, for DH to grab on his way to tennis or for us to
    throw in the day cooler for mountain biking or on the boat. They don't
    carry those at the general grocery stores, I can only find them at Walmart.
    Yet all the other stores have regular fig newtons.

    I hate grocery shopping, and it makes things worse that I have to shop
    multiple places to get what I want.

    Remember that really good jerky from Sedona? I've only found it at
    Walgreens, nowhere else.

    Heck, we only have three grocery stores in town... and I still have to
    shop all three because there are certain things that I can get at each
    store that I can't find at the other two. It's rather irritating, not
    to mention time consuming.

    I hate grocery shopping. Hubby actually likes doing it, so sometimes
    I'll send him off to one of the stores, usually Wal-Mart. But I think
    it's harder for him to resist temptation, so I do it most of the time.

    No, it's nutrionally more like regular yogurt than like cottage cheese
    and the Fage's is the other way around.

    I havne't tried it yet. I prefer Fage but it's gone up in price again
    so I've been buying TJ's (Greek style and regular). I get Stonyfield
    sometimes as well.

    I had it for lunch today and it was good but not like the TJ's or Fage.
    It had more of a Stonyfield consistency -- not at all watery but not
    nearly as thick as the other two Greek yogurt's that I've tried -- and
    was super tangy. I liked it but I didn't love it.
