| | | Anyone here have an eating disorder? Do you find it difficult to eat healthy? Were you able to lose/gain
weight in a healthy way?
I have some disordered behaviours like overeating and purging. I found
myself going back to purging after a few days of overeating. It's hard
to stop the cycle once you've started.
Being in control of what I eat is very important for me in preventing
my purging. |

Jenny, I'm no expert, but if you have an eating disorder, or even just some
of the behaviors, are you absolutely certain that your goals and body image
are accurate and healthy? Have you talked with your doctor about your
weight goals? |

At 100 to 105 lbs her BMI is in the lower half of the normal range. So
being on a drive to lower it further hints at a body image problem.

I myself have an image problem. But, I think that there are varying degrees
of image problem, and my concern here is it is on the severe end, being
detrimental to Jenny's health. Maybe there is much more to this picture
than just body image, but perhaps bordering on anorexia. WHile I want to be
supportive of people's efforts to lose weight, I also want to not just
encourage blindly. I don't want to push her into being sick. |

I think my goal weight of 95 lbs is reasonable because it brings me to
a BMI of 19. I do have body image issues and I hope I will be satisfied
at 95 lbs.
I've talked to my pdoc about my weight goals and she tells me not to go
on a diet because I will just yo-yo and I'm end up gaining more weight.
I'm convinced I won't do that because I plan on maintaining my weight.
I know I'm not fat, but I could lose a few pounds. My Mom thinks I
could lose a few pounds. |

Well, try to be healthy. |

You're 25, right? Are you still hung up on what your mother thinks of
your weight? Although I know we all will probably never be able to
escape our mothers, the way in which you have written about your
relationship with your mother leaves me to believe that you have some
major underlying issues that might bring on the possibility of an
eating disorder. I'm no therapist, but the signs are pretty glaring to
me.
That and the act you put on this board a while ago about wanting to
kill yourself over a few innocuous comments.
I'm currently in the throes of trying to understand my disordered
eating (compulsive overeating) and it's been very, very difficult. I
started off on my "diet" two years ago at 146lbs, went down to 131lbs
in a matter of months (I'm 5'9", by the way), and am now unhappy at
150lbs. I gained over 15lbs within the year due to my compulsive
overeating. As someone else said, please be careful and don't
over-diet, or the deprivation might cause your body chemistry to rebel.

You should not be so wrapped up in scale numbers.
Its all about how much bodyfat you are carrying around not what the
scale tells you. One can have [udge at any size if you dont have much
muscle to increase your metabolism. Here is a good example - this
person actually gained scale weight (from 108lbs to 113lbs) but slashed
her bodyfat from 22% to 13% which totally transformed her shape. You
may not want to be quite as muscular as she is, but its still all about
decreasing your bodyfat, not always your weight. http://www.bodychangers.com/shirleys_inter.shtml
Here's another from the same site: http://www.bodychangers.com/nicole_inter.shtml
She lsot only four pounds but dropped her bodyfat percentage from 21%
to 12% - big difference.

No, not really. I just mentioned what my Mom thinks to rationalize why
I need to lose more weight.

I'm trying to get things under control. I do realize I have problems.

Your BMI is 22.1. It seems like a healthy weight. My BMI is 21.8 right
now, very close to yours. You must understand how being at a healthy
BMI isn't always enough. I'm also unhappy at 108 lbs.
Sorry about your compulsive overeating. It's good though that you still
have a normal BMI. I suffer through emotional eating myself.
I really hope losing a few pounds won't cause me to yo-yo my weight
back up even more. I really have to make it a new way of life and not
just a diet. |

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with my weight. My obsession over my weight's
just a byproduct of something that's much more deep-seated.
I would try to do exercises that help you flesh out this problem of
emotional overeating. That's what I'm trying to work through right now.

As you're not really overweight, I would listen to your doctor about
not going on a diet. I am convinced that it was too strict dieting
that first introduced me to the idea of binge eating, and that I
never would have discovered it otherwise.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I found your last sentence
worrying. Issues with my mother around my weight gave me a lot of
additional problems when I first tried to battle with the onset of
binge eating disorder. After over 40 years of yo-yo bingeing and
dieting, the eating disorder is still lurking ready to be triggered
at any time. My advice is, take it easy, don't listen to what other
people say about your weight, and if you have body image issues and do
get down to 95 and find you're still not happy, then do seek help.
