Way of Eating?
I'm extra sensitive to salt as it is (I have Meniere's Syndrome), and
ever since I started eating really healthy, I love the taste of real
food, not the salt and fat that might be hiding the taste.
Today at lunch, the boss treated us to soup from the Soup Company. Now,
on the otuside that sounds fine, but....
I don't eat my lunch out. I bring everything from home for a number of
reasons. Mostly, because there's always too many calories in lunches
out and it's too expensive and because I can made nearly everything
better than restaurants. So, I've forgotten just how salt-laden
restaurant food is!
I had a bowl of chicken noodle, which was probably the best choice.
But, I might as well have said I'll have some chicken noodle soup to go
with my salt.
Sheesh!!! There was so much salt in that soup, I should have somehow,
slyly, thrown it out when no one was looking. But, I ate it. And now
I'm guzzling down water in hopes that I don't have water retention.
How can anyone think that stuff tastes good??? Bleh... |

I notice that with salt, sweetness, and fat/grease. I guess my healthy
eating habits have affected my whole family, because we had pizza the other
day, an infrequent indulgance, and my 9 yr old said it was like taking a sip
of grease and she felt, "gunked up"! |

| | | Re: Bleh... As a kid, on cold winter nights, it was the thing to have lipton chicken
noodle soup. We'd all get together and have a bowl each with crackers and
stuff... kinda a family thing..
Well it's kinda cold here these days, and I'm a little home sick, so I made
myself lipton chicken noodle soup, and my husband and I sat down with it
with crackers...
YUCK.. it's so salty that I couldn't eat the little bowl I made myself...
Snif.. I'm so sad..

Salt and eating out are a struggle for me. I am so sensitive to salt in
food its not funny. I dislike going to restaurants like Chilis or
Applebees because the salt in their food is so high that by the time dinner
is over I'm taking my jewelry off. I enjoy eating out, but the salt really
bothers me and it can be frustrating. I tend to stick to salads just
because I can control the salt a bit more.
I tend to make my own soups so that I can control the salt content there
too. |

I make most all of my own meals! And it's not just those crappy chain
restaurants. I don't even eat at them, by choice. The really good
restaurants use a lot of salt!
Yeah, it was a work thing, so I didn't have much choice of what was
being served. At least I had a choice of soups!
And I still have my much better tasting lunch waiting for me in the
fridge at the office...... |

I can say I am lucky to have one restaurant near work that makes just a
basic garden salad that I like and its low sodium. They also make a killer
pizza that doesn't make me bloat like a drowned pig.
I prefer eating out - just because I'm too lazy to cook. But I also
enjoy leaving the office at lunch to get away for an hour, its more for the
social aspect and the release from work. Although I have gone back to
walking at lunch for exercise. But by doing that it means I have to bring
my lunch and I struggle to do that. |

I kind of dread "work" lunches. I like having control of
what I eat and bring my lunch each day. Occasionally,
though, we order food (subs, Chinese) as a group to
celebrate someone's birthday and it's an effort for me to
eat the takeout food. I want to support the group and be
seen as a participant, but at the same time I try to stay
within my way of eating as much as possible. I think most
of my co-workers think I'm a vegetarian, because I often
find that the veggie options work out best for me with
takeout food. I notice the salt too, and marvel that the
ten other people at the table think the food tastes great,
while I'm not enjoying it much at all.
Take care,

That's exactly it! Everyone else LOVES all that junky food. I dread it
everytime. I also really hate the potlucks. This is the only company
I've ever worked at where it's ok to bring fast food. Yuck!
This last potluck at christmas time was better than the others, though.
Someone brought something with, get this...vegetables!!! *gasp!* I
remember bringing a very healthy dish and hardly anyone touched it. So,
maybe, just maybe, I'm a good influence. |

My family feels sorry for me, having to eat all this healthy stuff. Don't I
ever just sit down and enjoy a big mac, french fries and milkshake?
Uh....no. Ick. Not to say that I don't ever indulge in fattening sweet
greasy or otherwise unhealthy things, but I'm alot more selective in how I
"spend" my calories, and mcdonald's doesn't make that list. |

They put the fat, salt and other bad stuff because that's what 85% of the
American consumer "wants". Look at how successful Outback Steakhouse is with
the "Bloomin Onion". Heck, just go to any chain restaurant and look at the
menu. Fat and cholestorel laden. Salt is the least of ones problems eating
out. |

Too much salt is one of the biggest problems, along with fat and other
things, especially for those who have heart problems and high blood
pressure. And, it sure doesn't do anything good for those of us with
Meniere's (see my original post). |

Me? No, I don't think I went that low in my calorie count.
Now it varies, anywhere from 1200 to 1800 depending upon my mileage. |

I've only eaten at Outback once and thought the food was disgusting.
Overspiced and Overpriced. The blooming onion--something I thought I
would love--was the worst thing I had ever tasted. And that was *before*
I began this WOE, when I still ate anything that didn't eat me first!

I have the same thing with my coworkers. They think I'm a vegetarian because
of the choices I make when we eat together. When I was going in for surgery
some of my group originally proposed cooking some meals for DH and I but
then one of them said something to the effect of "oh but you eat all of that
weird stuff." In the end they gave us a gift certificate to the organic
food market/deli.

It isn't just the restaurants, unfortunately. Last week, in a moment
of "I am tired and feeling uninsipired, but I need something to go with
dinner" picked up a loaf of garlic bread at the grocery store. Both my
wife and I took one bite of it and thought, "This stuff tastes BAD".
The thing is that there was a time not too long ago when we used to
like the stuff.
Since getting used to much healthier foods, I can barely stand to eat
at a restaurant and when I do it has to be a 'good' one that focuses on
higher quality. Not only do I find that things contain way too much
salt, but it is also all the chemicals. I find that restaurant meat
has no taste and all the 'instant' stuff they use is like cardboard.
Whats worse is that often times I find myself regretting the "after
effects" of eating out. |

I always do bring my lunch, but company functions are tricky things.
You can't just scoff off a brought in lunch, at least not here.
No damage though in the long run. I drank a ton of water and managed to
lose a half pound.

Great gift, and very nice of them, but I think it's
hilarious that they think you eat weird stuff because you
eat healthy foods. I sometimes make wraps with marinated,
grilled tofu and I can't even describe the appalled
silence that descended upon the room when someone asked me
what I was eating the other day. (shrug) - I guess it was
a first :-).

There's one guy at work I talk to a lot about food with. He's Indian
from Fiji. He eats extremely healthy and I love to talk about Indian
food with him, as well as healthy things. There are other healthy
eaters in my office, but there are some really bad ones too. My boss
and two of my co-workers eat terribly, and guess what, they have worst
health problems. Surprise, surprise. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
