| | | Can you tell the difference? A friend recently told me that, in her opinion, you can tell the
difference between fat people who exercise and fat people who don't. In
other words, a 280 pound male who exercises will look different from a
280 pound male who doesn't exercise, even if they are both fat. Is this
true, in your opinion?

The overweight person who exercises might have more muscle definition than
one who does not exercise. The difference becomes more apparent when you
observe these people in action.

I think you can tell the difference in a couple of ways. Depending on
how someone is dressed, it's generally apparent whether someone
exercises. Also, given two 280 pound men, one of whom exercises, the
one who exercises would likely appear smaller than the other one. So
if I didn't know they both weighed 280, I'd probably guess that the
man who exercised weighed less.
I know that people think I look like I weigh less than I do -- no
doubt because I have relatively more muscle. And I wear a smaller
clothing size than most women my height and weight.

A decade ago I weighed what I weigh now--low 160s (yeehaw!!). But I did not
exercise then, and I do now. So, although I am wearing the clothes I wore
then (I never gave up hope of getting back there again), they fit much
differently. I know it is from the exercising. So I think you could look
at two 280 pound men and see the difference but, unless you knew they
weighed the same, you would not assume that one exercised and one did not.
You would assume that they weighed different amounts. |

Sometimes, but not always. Muscles are inherited. Some people will be
muscular even without purposely exercising, so that you can't even tell
for sure if thin people exercise or not. It seems more difficult to
tell with overweight people since their muscles are covered with fat.
The heart rate might be lower and they would probably have more stamina
if they exercise though and be in generally better condition.
Personally, I would not be able to exercise if I were overweight, since
I exercise to keep weight down for the most part and really don't enjoy
it. dkw |

Sometimes the muscle can be deep under the fat though.

My cycling class instructor is easily 20 or so lbs over weight, but she
teaches about 5 classes a day and can outpace all of us! So, I don't know
if I would know just how athletic she was if I saw her on the street, but
you can sure tell during class! She's a drill sargeant! |

Yabbut, even if the muscle is invisible, you can tell a person is strong by
the way they move -- "in action," as this poster said. Maybe that's what
you mean . . . Anywho, it's a matter of degree of course, but it's a sure
thing that the stronger somebody is the more likely I am to notice, "Hey,
that person works out."

| | | Re: Can you tell the difference? One prime example would be to put a couch potato next to a body builder -
both of the same height/weight. Then you could tell the difference.
I know that in my case, when I first started in ASD back oh, about 8+yrs
ago, I weighed about what I weigh now. Back then I was in size 12 clothes
and fat, lazy and not working out. I lost the weight, increased muscle
mass and spent several years doing well. About a year ago I let myself go
and gained weight. At first I was so proud of myself (and the denial
started) in that I gained weight but still stayed in the size 6 clothers.
Even up to last spring when I was at the same weight I'm at now, I only
bumped up to the size 8 clothes. So, dispite being the same weight I was
back 8yrs ago, I was still 4 clothing sizes smaller.
Then the lack of exercise caught up with me. I haven't gained weight since
last spring, but I have gained fat and lost muscle mass. And dispite the
fact that the scale remained the same, the size 8 clothing got to tight and
I migrated into the 10's. That's when I had to give myself the reality
check. FFID - I needed to do something. Now, only losing 3lbs, I am back
in the 8's comfortably, and working my way back down.
