Default Food & Exercise -- 10/16/2006

Hi all,

Well, I've been absent a while here :-). I spent last week visiting
my mother in North Carolina (after spending the previous week in
Dayton on business). I got home from NC on Thursday night and Friday
I went up to Maryland to attend my high school 40th reunion (where,
incidentally, no one had seen me since I'd lost all the weight :-) ).
I got home from that yesterday afternoon, and tomorrow morning we
leave for Minnesota. We're driving there and back -- making a fairly
leisurely trip of it -- to visit our ex-trainer and dear friend Tom
and his family.

I've been eating in a sort of modified vacation mode -- a bit too
much, but not out of control. I've kept up my calorie logs (as I had
my computer with me), but didn't have a good way to post them, as I
had no internet connectivity in the nursing home except for a computer
in the library with dial-up modem. I'm not going to type it all in
tonight, as I'm still busy packing, but my averages for last week
were: 1796 calories, 33% fat, 36% carbs, 23% protein. This included
more wine drinking than usual, as my mom likes to have some each night
before dinner, and then of course we drank at the reunion. And I
haven't been to the gym at all in my few days at home. In the last
week, though, I did manage 3 runs and one session doing strength
training with body weight and elastic tubes. My weight seems to have
stayed stable.

While on the trip to Minnesota I'll probably have internet
connectivity and be able to post, though from Google Notes rather than
Agent. I expect to cheat more during this period :-).

Anyway, here's today's data:

Food (all at home):

* 7:30: 2 poached eggs on 1 slice whole wheat toast w/ 3 slices melted
f/f cheese & 10g grated grana padano
* 10:00: All Bran cereal bar
* 1:15: 4 oz. ground turkey breast burger on whole wheat hamburger bun
w/ 3 slices f/f cheese & catsup
* 2:15: 3 caramels (small Kraft ones)
* 5:30: 2 fiber rye crackers
* 8:00: 150g pork tenderloin; 133g baked potato (half a medium potato)
* 11:00 (planned): 250g f/f Greek yogurt w/ 1 peach

Totals: 1399 calories, 30g fat (19%), 152g carbs (43%), 142g protein
(41%)

Exercise:

11:45 -- 3 mile run

I just noticed that your food intake of fruits and vegetables was a
peach. I didn't go back to check, but is this typical? If it is, what
is the reasoning behind it?

No particular reasoning; I don't eat as much fruit and veggies as
many people do. I do sometimes find them hard to digest -- certainly
couldn't handle the quantities some folks eat. But sometimes it's
just a matter of preference/convenience. I like most fruits and
veggies well enough -- especially veggies, but don't tend to make them
my first food choice all the time. Sometimes -- because of the
digestion thing -- thinking about eating them kind of makes me feel
queasy -- like right now early in the morning :-). Need to get some
protein in my stomach first!

Told DH about your message -- said you were probably a man after his
own heart. He guessed what I was going to say you'd posted just from
the context of the peach :-). But he said what he'd have posted --
just to make the connection more obscure, I guess, was, "Shall I part
my hair behind?" :-)

Or I might have said "I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk
upon the beach" when listing my daily exercise.

Why? She's already lost half her body weight and maintained it for quite a
long time now. What she's done works for her even if it might not work for
you.

Besides, if you've got cholesterol issues, you want to keep from overdoing
it on the eggs (mind I didn't say give them up). Other than that, eggs are
good for you!

It doesn't work at all well for poached eggs! I don't worry about the
eggs I eat, honestly. I don't see any reason to eat a substitute.

Most things I hear nowadays suggest that dietary fat is more of a
concern for cholesterol levels and dietary cholesterol. And while eggs
(yolks, particularly) are a source of fat, they're no worse than other
fats. Of course everyone should make their own choice, but I don't
have cholesterol issues anyway, and I make room in my daily fat and
caloric intake for the eggs I eat. I do not, overall, eat a high fat
diet.

I do have cholesterol issues (and heart disease) and have always been told
to go easy on eggs.

Studies keep coming up, but until they have the whole picture (right now
they are presenting every little study result as the "big picture") I'll do
what my doctors says!! ;o)

Now this being said, there's a whole paranoia thing going on about eggs. I
never had a doctor tell me not to eat any, only to keep my consumption to
reasonable quantities.. It's amazing how people take things like that and
generalize. If heart disease patients have to limit their consumption a
little, it means nobody should eat the stuff cause it causes HEART DISEASE!!

Just as a point of interest -- and not to advise anyone else on what to
eat -- the nutritionist at my mother's assisted living facility has
eggs on the menu 4 days a week, and does not feel that their
consumption is contraindicated even for those patients with heart
disease. (There's always a choice of breakfast entrees, though, so no
one has to have eggs unless they wish.)

Once you are in an assisted living facility, the time it takes for a
change in blood lipids to hurt you means it is no longer an issue. They
could probably had out cigarettes to the residents without much change in
life expectancy (except for the ones that are immediately affected by
nicotine).

Exactly... I eat eggs about 2-3 times per week.. and so does my family
(pretty much everybody has heart issues)... I used to have 2 every morning..
was told it's too much for me..

As with everything else.. balance..
