I got back this evening from a visit to my mother, who is 90 years old
and living in an assisted living facility in NC. I stayed in a vacant
room in home -- something they let visiting family do at no charge if
they have one free. It's a bit strange living there :-). It's also a
bit hard to eat the way I prefer, as the portions of good stuff (meat,
veggies, etc.) tend to be small, so I find myself eating desserts and
snacks and stuff just to avoid being hungry. And then I drink more
wine than usual, as it's kind of celebration time for my mom when I'm
there visiting :-). Anyway...
Monday, 10/30: Spent most of the day driving down there (350 miles).
In the evening we went out to a seafood restaurant, where we usually
eat my first night there.

Tuesday, 10/31: A busy day. Took my mom clothes shopping and out to
lunch. In the afternoon and evening there were Halloween events: 3:00
-- parade of 60 little kids from the local daycare in their costumes -
very cute; 4:15 -- musical entertainment and readings from Poe, etc.;
5:30 -- 8:00 -- dinner dance in the fancier dining room in the
independent living part of the complex. I actually got my mom out on
the dance floor. She loves to dance but always thought she needed to
have a guy to dance with -- I managed to get a couple of ladies groups
dancing and then some guys joined us. (Mom isn't too steady on her
feet but dancing works because there are people to hold on to :-).)
Food:
* 8:30 (assisted living dining room): 1 piece French toast w/ 2 pats
butter & 1 tbs maple syrup; 2 link sausages; 1/4 cup fresh pineapple
* 11:45 (restaurant): 3 oz. wine; 1 cup mushroom soup; 1 cup tossed
salad w/ 1 tsp vinaigrette; 1/2 roast beef & brie sandwich (split with
Mom) -- 1 slice grilled rye bread, 1/2 oz. brie, 2 oz. roast beef
* 3:00 (Children's parade): 1 mini cupcake; 1 chocolate bat cookie
* 4:30 (Halloween entertainment): 4 oz. wine
* 6:00 (dinner dance): 6 oz. wine; 2 oz. beef wellington; 4 oz. salmon
en croute; 1/4 cup mashed potatoes w/ gravy; handful of candy corn;
most of a small piece of pumpkin cheesecake; 2 bites apple strudel

Exercise: Nothing of real significance -- pushing Mom around in a
wheel chair in the stores, and a bit of dancing in the evening. I had
thought I might do some work with resistance bands at night but had to
do a long conference call with a consulting client so didn't have
time.
Wednesday: Had a lazy day hanging around the retirement home. Went
for a run in the morning while Mom was having her hair done. In the
evening we went to a sing-along and then had dinner at the grill room
in the independent living clubhouse.
Food:
* 8:30 (assisted living dining room): 2/3 cup oatmeal w/ 2/3 cup skim
milk and 1 cut-up medjool date (which I brought along); 1 1/2 biscuits
w/ 1 pat butter & 1 tsp jelly; 4 oz. cranberry juice
* 12:00 (assisted living dining room): 2/3 cup broccoli cheese soup;
small chef's salad w/ 1 cup greens, 1 oz. cheese, 1 hard-boiled eggs,
2 1/2 oz. ham, 1 tbs Italian dressing; apple strudel w/ 1 scoop
vanilla ice cream
* 4:00 (assisted living snack time): 1 chocolate bat cookie
* 4:45 (sing-along): 4 oz. wine
