Yesterday morning, rather than going to hip-hop class, I went to a
"Battles & Breakfast" hike at the conservancy. (The Civil War Battle
of Thoroughfare Gap took place on conservancy property, and we had a
Manassas Battlefield Park ranger there to do a historic walkthrough.
We also had a cookout breakfast in the woods.) In the evening I went
downtown to a fancy wine dinner -- one of two annual such events of a
wine organization I belong to. I stayed overnight at a hotel downtown
-- wouldn't want to drive home after so much wine (and it's late after
we get done anyway, and about a 45-mile drive). Ate and drank way
more than necessary all day!
Food:
* 7:15 (home): oatmeal (no added stuff, as we were having breakfast
later on the mountain)
* 10:30 (mountain picnic): scrambled eggs, hash browns (modest amounts
of each); 1 piece pumpkin bread; 2 pieces coffee cake; ~2/3 cup fresh
fruit; 2 cups orange juice with a splash of champagne
* 1:00 (home): 4 multi-grain crackers w/ ~1 1/2 oz. cheddar cheese
* 5:30 (reception at hotel): 1 glass wine (Chardonnay); 2 fried
mozzarella sticks
* 6:30 -- 11:30 (wine dinner): small portions of 13 different wines
(maybe 4 regular glasses total); passed appetizers (bruschetta; tuna
tartare; prosciutto w/ goat cheese & pear -- had a couple of each);
very small sampling portions of a bunch of courses: "Chilled Giant
Hawaiian Prawn Salad with Poached Quail Eggs, Organic Cranberry Beans,
and Rose Finn Potato"; "Seared Maine Diver Scallop with Celery Root
Consommé, Celeriac Puree and
Baby Lovage"; "Seared Sonoma Duck Breast with Vanilla Scented Quince
and Star Anise Essence", "Intermezzo -- Miniature Pear Smoothie", "Pan
Roasted Loup de Mer with Braised Oxtail and Salsify Ragout";
"Coriander Crusted Rack of Colorado Lamb with Chanterelle Mushrooms
and Eggplant Tian"; "Pipe Dream Farm Goat Cheese Cake with Mandarin
Oranges and Candied Walnuts"
Exercise:
* 9:00 -- 12:00: Around 2.5 miles easy hiking -- with a bit of
climbing -- not a whole lot of work.
* 6:15: 2/3 mile from hotel to restaurant
* 11:30: 2/3 mile walk back {My friend Mike and I were the only ones
who walked; everyone else took cabs. It was a beautiful night and an
easy walk, though I feel I should get extra points for doing it in
stiletto heels :-).}
