Dieting is going to kill that poor girl. The healthiest thing is for
her to be allowed to eat as much as she wants and let her body find its
right weight. That is what nature intended.

I would normally ignore cross-posted crapola like this, but holy cow, lady,
that poor girl can't even stand up. She loses her breath trying to crawl up
on the couch! I watched a couple of those videos and saw that 7 year old
girl eating like a pig. It may be that she has some medical disorder or
something. But if that's not the case, and the problem is due to her
overeating, then that is total child neglect and the state of Texas ought to
step in and take that child away from her parents or whoever it is that is
legally responsible for raising her. At the very least, Social Services
needs to step in and set the situation straight.
I respect the right of any ADULT to eat as much or as little as they want.
If somebody believes that they weigh to much or too little, it is up to that
person to make a decision: do something about it or do not. We're talking
about a child here, though, being raised by parents (?) who are just to
f-ing weak to do the right thing.
What a shame. |

Sadly, we don't know what the whole story is. She may have medical
problems why she is so large.

I looked around a bit, and apparently the girl is now 9 and weighs
less than 150 pounds -- still big, but not as astoundingly so. She's
had to have several surgeries on her legs to correct bone problems
caused by the weight gain, but she's able to get around.

There was a show on Discovery health about a little boy who no matter how
litttle or how much they fed him he gained weight (at the same rate). They
finally after several years figured out he had a rare disease and are trying
to figure out how to counter it. The mother was frustrated because she knew
that people thought whe was overfeeding and abusing the child - which she
wasn't. |

There are cases of childhood obesity that have nothing to do with how
much the child is eating, and instead have to do with certain
conditions. I hate to see people making fun of her like in those
dancing videos and then assume she gained 200 pounds in 2 years due to
eating alone. Haven't you ever seen those stories about mothers who
were run the hoops and threatened when all their babies consumed were
bottles but they were extremely overweight? I'd like to hear the why
she is like this before jumping to conclusions. She could be self-
comforting herself at this point with food because once she became
obese, there was nothing else to do but sit and be bored. kwim? |

I believe the ecstacy kid video is WAAAAAY more severe than this, and
yes, those involved in that should be shot. No telling what that did

Why do you say that? I didn't see any indication of mental retardation or
short stature. Hypotonia is hard to judges given her mobility restrictions,
but it must have required a fair amount of strength for her to drag herself
around the floor as she did in the video. In fact, the only feature of
Prader-Willi syndrome she obviously presents with is obesity.

Hypercortisolism is associated with weight gain because appetite is
increased. These people are fatter because they eat too much, iows.
So, exactly how does that equal a way to create lard-flesh out of thin
air? It does not, of course, you are just trying to change the subject. |

Do you know anything about Prader Willi??? If you claim to, then show
where the weight gain is from anything other than an inappropriate
appetite for food in relationship to need..
But you cannot. You just hoped no one would call you on your bs.

most obesities result from overeating not medical reasons. too much
fat
from food in early childhood is a breeding ground for dormant fat

If you saw a 20 year old guy who weighed 500 lbs, could not get out of
bed, already had a tracheostomy for breathing and his family claimed,
"He hardly eats anything and he still gains weight!!!" what you

1. His body somehow defied the laws of physics?

Uh, "an inappropriate appetite for food in relationship to need" is
exactly what one of the symptoms of Prader-Willi Syndrome is. From
the National Institutes of Health:
"Prader-Willi Syndrome is the most common genetic cause of life-
threatening obesity in children.
People with Prader-Willi syndrome have a problem in their
hypothalamus, a part of the brain that normally controls feelings of
fullness or hunger. As a result, they never feel full and have a
constant urge to eat that they cannot control.
Most cases of Prader-Willi syndrome result from a spontaneous genetic
error in genes on chromosome 15 that occurs at conception. In very
rare cases, the mutation is inherited.
There are generally two stages of symptoms for people with Prader-
Willi syndrome:
* Stage 1--As newborns, babies with Prader-Willi can have low
muscle tone, which can affect their ability to suck properly. As a
result, babies may need special feeding techniques to help them eat,
and infants may have problems gaining weight. As these babies grow
older, their strength and muscle tone usually get better. They meet
motor milestones, but are usually slower in doing so.
* Stage 2--Between the ages of 1 and 6 years old, the disorder
changes to one of constant hunger and food seeking. Most people with
Prader-Willi syndrome have an insatiable appetite, meaning they never
feel full. In fact, their brains are telling them they are starving.
They may have trouble regulating their own eating and may need
external restrictions on food, including locked kitchen and food
storage areas.
This problem is made worse because people with Prader-Willi
syndrome use fewer calories than those without the syndrome because
they have less muscle mass. The combination of eating massive amounts
of food and not burning enough calories can lead to life-threatening
obesity if the diet is not kept under strict control.
There are other symptoms that may affect people with Prader-Willi,
including:
* Behavioral problems, usually during transitions and
unanticipated changes, such as stubbornness or temper tantrums
* Delayed motor skills and speech due to low muscle tone
* Cognitive problems, ranging from near normal intelligence to
mild mental retardation; learning disabilities are common
* Repetitive thoughts and verbalizations
* Collecting and hoarding of possessions
* Picking at skin
* Low sex hormone levels
Prader-Willi syndrome is considered a spectrum disorder, meaning not
all symptoms will occur in everyone affected and the symptoms may
range from mild to severe.
People with Prader-Willi often have some mental strengths as well,
such as skills in jigsaw puzzles. If obesity is prevented, people
with the syndrome can live a normal lifespan.
Prader-Willi syndrome cannot be cured. But, early intervention can
help people build skills for adapting to the disorder. Early
diagnosis can also help parents learn about the condition and prepare
for future challenges. A health care provider can do a blood test to
check for Prader-Willi syndrome.
Exercise and physical activity can help control weight and help with
motor skills. Speech therapy may be needed to help with oral skills.
Human growth hormone has been found to be helpful in treating Prader-
Willi syndrome. It can help to increase height, decrease body fat,
and increase muscle mass. However, no medications have yet been found
to control appetite in those with Prader-Willi."
Apparently, there are other physical markers for Prader-Willi. These
include a narrow face, almond-shaped eyes, small-appearing mouth, a
thin upper lip with downturned corners of the mouth, and full cheeks.
The child's eyes may cross (strabismus).
I never said Jessica didn't eat excess food. I just offered my
opinion as to what caused her to eat that much.
Chill out.

I worked with some adults with Prader-Willi in my former life as an
employment counselor for developmentally disabled people. Jessica's facial
appearance is typical of what you described.
Check the fourth pic down on this page: http://tinyurl.com/2ouy7s
BTW, one of the people I worked with died of septicemia because he
obsessively picked at his skin - another symptom of Prader-Willi listed
above. |

Thanks for the back up. I thought it seemed pretty obvious, but maybe
I just watch too many shows on Discovery Health....
Also, while there are children who, because of poor diet and lack of
exercise, become obese, to gain that kind of weight in that short a
time span just screams genetic disorder.

Not to nitpick but my original point was that Prader Willi or any
other condition involving weight gain happening "out of thin air, ie,
without excessive calorie intake. |

however it's a very narrow view.
I gained 16 lbs in 7 days and I did not have one bite of food or anything to
drink.
There are a lot of ways that ppl gain weight, not all of them are due to
excessive calorie intake. Most, but not all. |

Then you're an alchemist *and* you've survived dehydration by a miracle.

Your original point was actually two questions and a statement:
"Medical problems??? Like what? I mean, that would create lard-flesh
out of thin air."
I answered your two questions. I didn't bother with your statement
because the tone was very unpleasant. "[L]ard-flesh." Sheesh.
Your *original* point didn't address Prader-Willi Syndrome at all.
I'm going to hazard a guess and say you knew nothing about that
particular genetic condition.
Then, when I suggested a reason why that child was so heavy, you
questioned my knowledge about Prader-Willi, said that I was hoping no
one would call me on my "bs," and that I use "impressive sounding"
words to cover my ignorance of the subject. When I proved that you
were wrong on all counts, you backed off on the ad hominem attacks.
I think your *true* original point was that you thought "lard-flesh"
was a really *cool* hyphenate, and you just had to show it off to
*somebody*. | | |
