Default Hi- I need to join you!

Hi- I have been dieting now for almost a month, been 80% good I'd say-
and not losing a pound. I admit to not exercising enough, but I still
think ishould have lost Something!!!
so I'm going to visit and read, and hopefully learn what I'm doing
wrong.

What do you mean by 80% good?. You can do a lot of damage in that 20% bad.

Phil you're right you're right. But my bad has not been super bad-
but without details I know it's impossible to furnish a true answer.

Welcome to the group!

You may find that to get more useful help, you'll have to be more
specific about what you are eating, how many calories, how much
exercise, etc...

Weight loss is one of those things, it goes differently for everyone.
For some, it can go very, very slowly. For others, quite quickly. 80%
good eating might work fine for some, others may need 90% - 100%
compliance. As mentioned, a lot depends on just how bad the 20% got.

If you've been eating a lot of high sodium foods on the 20% portion,
that might be causing some water retention.

It's also possible your calorie level is either too restrictive or not
restricted enough. Or perhaps you are eyeballing portions
inaccurately. Or you may need to crack down and get exercising.
Myself, I find it hard to lose unless I am keeping active.

It's hard to say what might be going wrong for you, you just haven't
given us much info to go on here.

But keep reading and post more when you feel ready.

SHORTCUTS TO WEIGHT LOSS

Mission Statement: Why I will do this.

PLAN: When and how I'll do this. (Life issues in order) Habit
formation is key..... 3 weeks will change you permanently if you let
it happen. Stick to it for only 3 weeks straight!!

ACTIVITY: Walking 6 days a week, 20 to 30 mintes. Don't "go for a
walk". This is exercise. Change speeds every 3 minutes. Not too
easy of too hard. Consistency pays.

NUTRITION: (Weight Watchers or another avenue for accountability)
- Keep it simple by eating simply. Desert the desserts. No heavy
sauces; no battered or fried foods. Cook extra
- "Eat Clean".... Look at what you eat.... "What's in that"?
- PROTEINS: Eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, lean meats, lean dairy
- CARBOHYDRATES: Oatmeal (Whole grain cereals) rice, potato, Yams,
Whole grain pasta, less bread
-HYDRATED FIBERS: any time anywhere Anything you can squeeze a lot of
H2O out of....
All crunchy veggies and these fruits: apples, oranges, grapefruit,
berrier

HOW TO EAT: 3 meals and 3 no carb snacks
AT EACH MEAL, choose a fist sized portion of protein, carb and
hydrated fiber
AT EACH SNACK, chose a fis sized portion of protein and hydrated fiber
(no carbs) Berries and whipped cream OK
Eat "consciously"; eat right then leave the table
The scale is not your friend... 5-10 pounds of H2O on the move

And what are 'hydrated fibers'? not carbs? wtf?
Carbohydrates contain fiber. Fiber isnt something separate from carbs.

Celery, Green Beans, Lettuce.

What is a "fist sized portion of protein, carb, hydrated fiber"? 8 oz of
bratwust and a glass of water?

A block of cheese wrapped in newspaper?

Do I include the hydrated fiber in the fist?

Well, dietary fiber is not digestible (by definition), so it really
doesn't matter what it is. There are no calories in fiber by
definition. It's free "food", like water. It matters if you are a deer
or a cow, but not a human since we cannot break down fiber (cellulose)
because we lack the cellulase enzyme. That's my take. Low carbers
count fiber for some reason, but I don't believe it should be counted.
Now some fibrous food is not fiber. Perhaps that's where the problem
lies. dkw

Hi lissa, and welcome.

You may notice that there's a lot of spam traffic--ignore them. You'll
soon find out who the "regulars" are. They're the ones who, like you,
post their numbers.

To get you started, check out fitday.com, stumptuous.com/cms/index
(Mistress Krista rocks!), and crossfit.com (I'm really liking some of
their workouts of the day).

Start recording what you eat and how much you exercise, weigh yourself
and take some measurements, and writing down your goals. You'll be glad
to have a reference point when you achieve each goal.

Good luck to you, stick around...

I agree that it helps to form good habits, but three weeks may not be
enough to have them so established they can't be disrupted. Honestly,
it can be a lifelong battle to keep the good habits up.

I can guarantee you that three weeks is categorically NOT long enough
for me to get a habit fully established. Even several months and I
find it easy to drop back into bad habits.

Heck, if a crisis happens, like when my mother died unexpectedly, I
can drop back into bad habits after a YEAR of practicing good ones.

I agree, walking is good exercise... but not everone will be able to
start at this level. This is not a bad goal to aim for if one has been
inactive.

Agree, pretty good stuff. Though I see no reason to limit veggies to
crunchy ones, what's up with that? Spinach isn't particularly crunchy
(except maybe the stems) and is a very healthy vegetable. Looseleaf
lettuce also comes to mind.

And why leave out the tomato? (Technically, it's a fruit, but you
don't mention it there either.)

And you forgot, include some healthy fats in moderation. Olive oil,
canola oil, nuts, seeds, avocados, flax meal, etc...

Not too awful, but not going to be for everyone. Diabetics might not
need the fist sized portion of carb at every meal for instance.

Welcome to the group, Lissa. We need more folks who are trying to lose
weight around here. Together we can do it if we stay positive and supportive
of each other. You;ve taken a good step by finding a support network. Enjoy.

And the whipped cream might not be so good.

And Tomatoes are Vegetables. The US Supreme Court said so. So it must
be true.

Low carbers don't "count fiber". Low carbers -subtract- the fiber
carbs from the other carbs in a particular food.

Hello Joanne, what I mean by "hydrated fibers" are the salad and baby
carrots that you eat, the water filled fruits and vegetables. You can
pretty much eat all you want of these without gaining fat. They take
about as many calories to digest as they have in them. Also, these
cruncy veggies and fruits will slow down the digestion of starches so
they're less fattening and finally, it's the veggies and fruits that
have the cofactors for health and long life, vitamins, minerals and
enzymes

Regards,

Jay

Hi Joanne
When I mentioned a fist sized portion of protein, I was referring to
what I had listed for proteins in my post. Did you see cheese in
newspaper, or bratwurst listed as protein sources?

The only known way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you

I've been trying to diet for over 50 years, and this last 9 months has
been the most successful ever. In my case, I have to keep a log of
EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth. If it has any calories, I log it. If
I eat a Tic Tac to freshen my breath... that's two calories and it
gets logged!

I also have a cheapie food scale with me, and I weigh everything I
eat. I lookup calories of foods at http://www.calorieking.com/foods/,
or get the information from the food label and I enter the calories in
my log. I try to maintain my calories under a certain level... for me,
I'm currently shooting for 2500 a day, which at my current weight,
results in noticeable loss. I use my computer to keep a diary of my
daily food intake and calorie count. It's a lot of work, but I've
managed to lose over 150 pounds in the last 9 months doing it this
way. There's also a page I use for reference with calories required at
http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html. (Note: be very
conservative when estimating activity level)

I get very little exercise due to other problems, but as the weight
loss continues, I plan on doing more. It would be very nice to take a
walk, but I'm not there yet. I manage to get from point A to point B
inside my house, but even a trip to the mailbox at the curb, would be
a major outing at this point. If I can do it, I know you can. It's
going to be hard work, but if you really want it, you can do it.

Keep us informed how it's going, and if you need any support, there
are many here that are willing. Like another poster said, there's
always a trouble maker or, two... three... thirty... in any group.
You'll soon figure out who the serious people are, and who the
buttholes are ::looking around for the dirty word cops:: .... Did I
say that? LOL I'm innocent, I tell ya....

Thanks. It's actually a good feeling doing this well. I've lost
hundreds, if not thousands of pounds over the years, but never this
much for this long. I really have a good feeling about it this time.
Plus, I'm getting older and with any luck, I'll kick the bucket before
I can gain it all back.

I'm curious, Zil--if you don't mind sharing--how did you reach this
state to begin with? You don't have to answer--and perhaps you've
already told your story and I missed it--but I do wonder what happens to
people to cause their weight gains.

My weight gain was due to complacency and emotional eating. I had a
whole lotta baggage to get under control in order to succeed. I think a
lot of folks have similar issues.

Good luck on your program--you're doing great, and I'm sure you'll stick
with it!

I'm not really sure. I've always had a weight problem and it just
sorta snuck up on me. I'm sure if I spent thousands of dollars on
therapy I could give you a better answer, but the short version is
that I've always liked food better than I liked myself.
