| | | How many servings are in a bag of chips? How many servings are in a big bag of chips? I need to figure out how
many calories I binged on. :-( Is it 6 servings?
250 x 6 = 1500 kcal/bag
Does that seem right? I didn't finish the entire bag, I left a little
bit, maybe one serving.
I hate myself. I binged and purged yesterday and I binged today.
I went to the grocery store to buy some romaine lettuce. I bought that
plus 2 bags of chips impulsively. I didn't even wait to get home first,
I went to find a place to sit and eat them. There were no free benches
so I decided to go to McDonald's. I had to order something to sit
there, so I ordered 6 chicken nuggets.
I ate the nuggets then proceeded to eat the chips. I'm such a pig. :-(
Before I ate the entire bag I threw it out. I also left the other bag
of chips on top of the trash receptacle. I'm glad I got rid of the
second bag, but I wish I hadn't bought them in the first place.
Any tips on how to go grocery shopping without buying binge food? |

Some people recommend never having the high-calorie food around the
house. This makes sense if you are the only one who might eat it and
you never want to eat it, but some people live with others who do eat
chips for example. Since you can obviously slip out to McDonalds or any
store in a matter of a couple of minutes, it really doesn't matter what
is in your house once you decide NOT to eat it and stick with it.
Willpower has to come first and you don't have that. When I say
willpower, I mean more of a rule that is never going to change. With
you, buying the chips was probably a mistake. Opening them and taking
the first bite was another, then continuing to eat more than one
serving was another. With willpower, you wouldn't even buy the chips or
stop at McDonalds for any reason. I don't even go down the grocery isle
that sells chips, cookies, meat, or candy, and apparently you shouldn't
either once you become serious about dieting. I know it's tough, but
you haven't really decided to diet yet. dkw |

First off, stop brooding over what happened. You have apparently
already decided that this behaviour isn't something you want to
continue which is a step in the right direction.
Second, see if you can identify what your trigger was / is and avoid it
if possible. Last week, I skipped lunch (mistake) and when I stopped
at the store on my way home, I had picked up two large bags of potato
chips. Of course, I was very hungry and had opened the one bag before
I even got out of the damned parking lot. Had I not skipped lunch and
let myself get so hungry, I wouldn't have bought the chips.
Third, remember that one meal or impulsive snack didn't get you to
where you are today and in that respect having the chips or an
occasionaly splurge won't make that big of a difference in the long
run. Just start making something positve of the situation and you will
feel a lot better.
As far as shopping goes, here are some tips.
1 - Don't go to the store when your hungry! Eat something before hand.
I would recommend staying away from things high in carbohydrates or
sugars as these can make you hungrier. This is a YMMV issue so you
will need to use your discression.
2 - Figure out what you want to make and eat for the week (or whatever
period your shopping for) before you go and make a shopping list. This
not only will help you keep on track, but I have found that when I go
with a list it helps with the spending A LOT!
3 - When you do go shopping plan to allow yourself an impulse item or
two and don't feel guilty about it. However, when you do decided on
what your item is going to be, try to be cognizent of your goal(s) and
make a decision in line with them. |

hate yourself, or are you just ashamed of your actions?
Bingeing is about more than just choosing the wrong foods. You might
want to see someone about this and figure out why you are intentionally
harming yourself. You cannot really eliminate the effects without
getting to the cause. It would really be worth your while. |

Yes, perhaps she can go away and get the help she needs. Or at least go
away. Jenny is like "Edna Pearl" in that she's confused
alt.support.diet with something else.

I have the wife do it. I told her last night to skip the chips. Maybe
just don't go down that aisle?
I picked up some "naked" Stacy's chips the other day at Smoothie King
thinking they'd be low calorie. Big mistake, all the calories of regular
chips and little taste.
I need to get off the chips and the diet cokes, too. One leads to the
other for me. |

Jenny, Since you posted that you have bulimia, you HAVE to get local help in
treating it. Just posting here won't help you get rid of it, as you seem not
to be addressing and appropriately dealing with the internal issues that set
off bulimia again and again. Ask your mom to help find you a local counselor
trained in EDs.
By the way, I had bulimia for almost 2 years in the 80s. |

Jenny,
You have to understand something. Buying binge food isn't the problem.
Overeating binge food is. I buy binge food and eat it and lose weight at
the same time because of one reason, I eat MORE Fat Burning foods than I
eat Fat Storing foods. And that's basically what everyone does to "properly"
eat.
The first thing you need to do is change your perspective about eating.
Eating is good for you, and treating each meal like it's part of the BIG
picture.
Also know, each time you eat things as a "meal" try to remember to properly
balance what you eat for the meal. Eat a Protein, Starchy Carb and Fiberous
Carb at each meal - 5 times a day. Basically every 3 hours.
If ya want to binge on chips, eat a salad, and fruit with them!
Believe me I pig out too, but I also understand what I have to do to
balance the nutrient calories to maintain weight.
The more you get into properly eating, the more that urge will disapate
to buy and eat binge foods.
Hope this helps, and is on topic to what your asking. |

Depends on how big the bag was. I checked a large bag (14oz) of Lay's
original chips while shopping today. They use 1oz as a serving, 14 servings
per bag, 150 calories per serving. So if it was that big of a bag, you ate
around 2000 calories.

first off, if you want to buy chips BUY LOW FAT OR BAKED CHIPS! lays
light chips or wow chips are fine. DIET SODA to dull your sweet tooth
SUGARFREE GUM to keep your mouth occupied. look at the nutrition label
on the back or side of packaging for serving information. and what the
actual recommended serving would be. ALWAYS LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVES TO
FOODS YOU CRAVE for example: I LOVE GUMMY CANDIES (flavored with High
Fructose Corn Syrup) but DRIED FRUITS are better. FLAVOR FOODS WITH
HERBS instead of oil. use vinegar on salads. snack on fresh fruit or
salads. cook veggies. avoid flour. your first choice to snack on is as
follows: VEGGIES, FRUITS, SKIM MILK, NONFAT CHEESE, POTATO, RICE, WHEAT
<---includes FLOUR! |

It's good to know you have talked to your mother about it, Jenny. Having
someone close by who knows and cares is important. I'm glad you had a

I'm happy to hear this. It might also help to get some
hobbies/interests that you like to keep you busy, especially through
those times when it's most difficult. It will give you something
