| | | I purchased FitDay I was very surprised and pleased about how easy it is to use. I hate
counting calories, have put it off for a long time, and this software
practically does it for me so... a good thing.
(no, I'm not pushing FitDay, jus' sayin')
Today was a day of abstinence for me, my first. I felt like I was
starving to death, and I still ended up taking in over 3,000 calories.
And the worst thing is, I really *tried*. This afternoon I felt like
there was a beast in my stomach screaming EAT SOMETHING OR DIE, and I
still held out and didn't binge like I felt compelled to do.
I still had almost 1,000 calories more than I wanted to take in today
and I ate almost nothing compared to what I usually eat.
This is going to be harder than I thought. :-/ |

Fitday is a great tool. I think most of us use it - at least the free
version of it.
Any time you reduce your intake from what you are used to, there is a period
of time that the body protests and you'll feel tired and crabby. Then it
adapts, and that feeling goes away. One way to combat that is to make small
changes - say cut your typical intake by 500 calories per day for a week.
Then take it down a bit more. Also, make sure that what do you eat really
counts. Pick foods that are really going to nourish and energize your body.
If you used to eat 4000 calories of crap, and now you eat 2000 calories of
crap, you'll feel like crap. But if you now eat 2000 calories of healthy,
well-balanced fuel, you should actually feel better. |

Sounds logical. I luckily happened on a nutritionist's site this
morning, one where she answers all sorts of questions, entered some
basic information and received some suggestions about how much fat,
carbohydrate, etc. I should be taking in each day based on my diet goal.
I'm even more pleased than yesterday as it seems to be slowly but
surely coming together for me.
I was once more surprised (based on FitDay calculations) on exactly how
much 'junk' I'm eating per day - the maximum value being 4 times more
than I should of some foods. Yikes. |

I lost my origianl weight through the WW program back in 1996. I've
used Fitday since that time whenever I see a few pounds coming back.
It helps me to keep on track and lets me see where I'm adding those
additional calories.
I must say exercise has been the largest reason I've been able to
maintain my weight loss. In the winter months when I'm not able to
get out on the bike as often I see the weight slowly creep up.

LOL!
What sort of abstinence is it, when you're taking in something like
twice the calories that you need? |

Well, in the case of someone who is significantly overweight, 3000-6000
calories is not all that abnormal. |

Exactly.
Another thing I think helps, find out what compels you to eat, and deal
with the problem at the source instead of auto-self-medicating with food.

How rude. I'll remember your name and treat you with the respect you
deserve. Or maybe I'll treat you with the respect befitting someone who
knows how to respond to strangers in public. But would you realize you
were being shown a good example? Probably not. Still, it might be
worth a try.
> What sort of abstinence is it, when you're taking in something like

First, it's abstinence from binge-eating. The word 'abstain' doesn't
pertain solely to caloric intake.
Second, how do you know how many calories I need unless I provide you
with my height, weight, body type, or BMI, etc.? You don't.
Friendly unsolicited advice: Sometimes it's better to scoff in silence
until you have all the facts, lest you show your ignorance and make a
fool of yourself in front of others. |

Although in my past experience when there's something interesting going
on the lowest common element does tend to jump in first, so this initial

Well, then, lets see some of your clever wit. Sorry you're having a bad day,
that doesn't mean you have to "get everyone back" by saying something nasty.

What makes you think I'm having a bad day? I had a rather good day,
actually.

I wrote what I thought was a relevant post based on software I'd heard
mentioned many times and a concept that seems to work (keeping track of
calorie intake), then came back to find a couple people had responded on
topic but one chose to scoff at me while another tried to appear cute by
speculating on my sex life. While it's no skin off my nose in the big
scheme I do reserve the right to respond. If that offends you perhaps
you should spend a few moments wondering why. Also, in my opinion my
response wasn't nasty. If I'd wanted to be nasty I could've done a much
better job.

If I'd wanted to quote I would've quoted. Search engines lie at my

There are many intelligent people on this ng. But if you are not thick
skinned, chances are you will get offended. There are the retards, the

I haven't so far. I won't pay attention to them in the future, that's

All true as far as I've observed. I'm no Usenet newbie, if that's what

It sounds like you got your money's worth already with that
information.
Instead of falsely believing that you have a metablolic disorder as
many people do, you now know you are simply eating too much.
Instead of stressing about a phantom disorder you can't control you
have been given information that you can do something about.
I've read sundry articles over the years that most people, even
informed ones, will underestimate how much they eat. I've been
calorie counting for a while. Sometimes I will just write down my
food and portions and not fill in the calories for a few days. I am
always amazed how much higher my intake is over my mental estimate.
Calorie counting has to be the most underrated fitness activity.
For ~10 min a day you lose pounds a month just by accurately tracking
your intake and levelling off the excess.
I still get impressed how it isn't what most people consider to be a
reasonable meal that gets them, that it is the harmless little snacks,
nibbling from the refrigerator, tasting from a pot, and "occasional"
binges that pack the weight on.
I think many people would lose most of their excess weight if they
just stopped those behaviors. |

I've narrowed it down even further (for myself) since writing that post.
Oh how I'd love to tell all overweight people I've found the 'fountain
of weight loss', blanket solution that'd help us all but I can't. Can
only say I'm busy exploring/paying attention to my own personal journey
and finding the traps. Anyway...
I'm seriously beginning to believe from the time I was a child I've
fallen prey to over-sized portions and pushed consumerism when it came
to food. (and all else for that matter) This is one instance bigger
definitely isn't better. I'm going to have to *completely* re-learn.
Now, I agree with the Historian when he posted (some time back) that
obesity didn't equal victimhood and 'fat' didn't just happen. The thing
is, though, that you learn the wrong thing to begin with, then when you
finally wake up and realize it's wrong and begin looking for solutions,
the solutions presented to you are false at worse or misleading at best.
Leading me to believe making healthy lifestyle changes isn't a task
for the weak-hearted or those lacking in a real desire to analyze, work
(work, work) and change.
The people doing it or maintaining are real modern day heroes a cut
above the norm. |

And that, of course, calls for an immediate donut! |

Laughing isn't rude. It's just a basic response to something funny. If
you don't want that response, then don't behave in ways that evoke it.
In other words, don't be laughable and people won't laugh.

Ooh, a stalker. Do you want my phone number and address too?

Or, rather, you will /think/ you're doing that, while in fact rudely
patronizing me with a lecture on manners.

Other than in jest, you cannot indulge in excess and call it
abstinence from hyper-excess.
It's comical to abuse the word that way.

No woman needs 3000 calories per day unless she's training for Beijing
2008, or is something like seven feet tall and highly muscular. |

A contract usually purchases the actual application of one's intellect
and skill. Wit is merely the demonstration which may help win such a
contract. Those who /can/ demonstrate, usually do so, liberally.

You do know that ``sorry you're having a bad day'' really means ``I
suspect you might have a bad personality, but I'm willing to believe
it's just a bad day''?
> I had a rather good day, actually.
That is to say, you're confirming that it's the personality. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
