If so... woo-hoo!!
Actually, I just bought myself a Tanita scale (thanks for the
recommendations). So maybe it's just natural variance and not a true
weight loss. Time will tell. I'd been weighing myself once a week on
two different gym scales - each giving different but (frustratingly,
stubbornly) consistent measurements for a few months now, despite
exercising.
The exercise program has led me to lose an inch here and there (walking
and running - no strength training at this time.. it is in the plans
though). Weight thankfully stabilized but hasn't budged from this
higher plateau. I just started counting calories January 6, hoping to
get myself finally off this plateau.
I'm 41, female, 5 feet tall, medium frame. Current weight 118.4
(yeah!!.. was consistently stubbornly 119-120 for months. .. down one
pound .. read 119.8 the first day I got the scale, then 119.2 the
next... now 118.4 today).
Goal weight 110, or whatever weight but a lower BF%. Tanita says my BF%
is 29%; online calculators that use measurements say it's around 24%.
All I know is that one year ago I weighed 110, and my pants fit and I
don't feel right in my own skin. I'd weighed 110 for years, and my
pants have fit for over a decade.... until a year ago. My weight seemed
to shoot up overnight; I believe the culprit was
Nexium. I'm off it
now, but it seems my body has gotten used to a newer, higher setpoint.
I would like to post the custom goals I have set up on fitday and get
everyone's feedback. I'll do that tomorrow when I have more time. The
Tanita scale says I can eat about 1900 or so calories to maintain this
current weight. Various calculators online give quite a range... which
is frustrating. At any rate, I'm aiming for a range of 1300-1500 cals
per day. (I won't eat less than 1200 because I don't think you can get
good nutrition). I have a spreadsheet set up and by my calculations, I
should be down 1.68 lbs by now.... so I think that I really *did*
finally get the scale to move, and it's not just an aberrant
fluctuation!
Finally, I'm not a diet newbie. About 15 years ago, I was overweight.
Too many cheesesteaks, french fries, ice cream, and McD's. My weight
kept going up and up. After my first was born, I taught myself
nutrition, counted calories, and lost a lot of weight. After my second
was born, I took up exercising and gained a lot of muscle and shrunk my
figure even more. Since then I've been an on and off again exerciser
and haven't counted calories because I didn't need to: I'd learned a
way of eating ... small portions, a nearly vegetarian diet, lots of
whole grains, no snacking. My size - whether exercising and strength
training or not - has remained within a narrow window for well over a
decade.
Until one year ago, when I suddenly ballooned. (Yes, ballooned! This is
NOT my imagination... In February I had bought a set of clothes to wear
on a vacation last April, and by the time the vacation rolled around,
none of it fit... ack!!).
I guess the lesson is that even if you conquer the weight loss, you
still need to remain vigilant.
