Default ipod recommendation?

I am so behind the times! I'm still lugging around my CD walkman... I
really need to get something to put all my music on... I'm so bad about
losing or scratching up my CD's. I need something I can use during
workouts, so it needs to be good about motion, and also use in the car too
if possible. I looked at them in the store the other day, and there were
about a thousand of them. How do you choose? Any recommendations?

My recommendation is to buy a Genuine Apple iPod. The alternatives are
not much cheaper and don't work as well. The one consideration is that
some of the alternatives use alkaline batteries, ie AA or AAA and
therefore can be run indefinitely without access to a charger.

Which of the models suit you best, only you can answer. The 8GB flash
version would be an excellent compromise. Rugged and holds about 150 CDs
worth of music.

I second buying a legitimate Apple iPod.

You have three choices to make--your model, memory upgrades, and color.

The iPod models are Shuffle ($80), Nano ($150), and iPod ($250). The
Shuffle is lighter-sized, plastic, has only a few buttons, and plays
music. The Nano is the same as the Shuffle but with a rugged, metallic
cover and friendly menus. The iPod is the same as the Nano except twice
as big, plays videos, and has massive memory.

You need approximately 1GB of memory per 20 CDs you want to store.
Which one fits you best--only you can say.

The shuffle is incredibly small, like the end of your thumb small. It
plays the music in random order only.

Teh Nano and the video ipods allow you to select songs, make play lists,
etc.

I bought a Shuffle but it felt too flimsy. I returned it for the 2 GB
Nano and I'm very satisfied (after two weeks). It's holding 48 hours of
lectures and only 60% full.

I can select songs and I've figured out pause, play, volume-up, and
volume-down... but I still haven't figured out how to rewind a track!

I got a Cowon iaudio M5 about a year ago, mostly because it was on
sale. 20 GB storage, fairly light. It doesn't skip when jogging with
it, but you can pretty much count on that on non-CD players anyway.

I like that it supports free music formats, like flac and ogg vorbis,
but that wasn't so important. The user interface is a little clunky,
but manageable. Downloading music into it is a snap, it looks like a
another hard disk on the PC, so it's just drag and drop without any
extra software needed. Some players insist on using their own silly
software, so you may want to avoid that.

As for the ipod, it's the most popular thing, so it has tons of
accessories and apparently interfaces very well with Apple's music
store, if you're into that sort of thing.

Since you want to use it in your car, there are some options,
depending on what you have in your car... Some newish car stereos can
interface with an ipod and you can use the usual car stereo controls
and remotes for controlling the ipod too. It becomes just another
programming source.

Other car stereos can interface with anything that looks like USB
storage and many MP3 players do.

Beyond that, you can get those short range radio transmitters and just
use your car radio to pick up the ipod or whatever you choose.

Oh yes, some players have a radio receiver too. The reception is
usually poor especially when moving, so it's a pointless feature.

Do any of these gizmos support weighted random selection?

I envision thumbs up and thumbs down buttons like on TiVo (or better
yet, a up/down rocker button). The unit would keep a rating for each
song. New songs would be given an average rating. While a song is
playing, I could press thumbs up or thumbs down and that song's rating
would be increased or decreased. Songs would be selected randomly, but
the higher the rating, the more often it would be selected.

I am not aware of any player with that feature. iPod supposedly now has
an alternative randomization feature that prevents having two songs from
the same (artist, album?) too close together, making it less random but
feels more random.

I have the 3rd gen 20 GB ipod. bought it on ebay, refurbished for less
than $100. it works
like a charm. I don't need one that plays video or anything else, just
music and this one
is just perfect. I have over 60 cd's on it and it is only a little over
half full. it is so very easy to
use. Apples Itunes and websites make it all very simple. I also bought
a transmitter so I can use it in the card. the first one I bought was
rather cheap and did not work all that well the 2nd
one from Belkin works like a champ though. It sounds like I'm playing a
cd. Is it durable? Well I've had mine bounce off of the treadfmill
while working out, a couple of times and it is still woirking just
fine!

I have a 2g Nano I won at a conference, and a Rio Forge that takes
memory cards, so you can switch cards for different listening choices.

I like them both, but Itunes music will only play on an Ipod, and Ipods
don't recognize some PC audio formats...

My older daughter has a 1g Ipod shuffle ($125), and the younger has a
125mb Coby player--just $16.
