Lactose intolerance is very common and many people do not know they
have one. This is because tolerance to milk often occurs slowly as
people lose their ability to digest lactose. The symptoms are
digestive problems, bloating, gas, stomach cramps and for many people
it only occurs if they consume a larger amount of dairy products.
My brother, an MD, discovered at age 60, that he had a mild lactose
intolerance. Since it tends to be inherited, he suggested I might too,
and I had to admit that I too have digestive problems if I eat a lot
of ice cream or drink a lot of milk.
The answer though is easy. There is lactose-free milk. This milk has
an enzyme that predigests the lactose. The taste is the same. The
alternative I recently discovered is 8th CONTINENT LIGHT CHOCOLATE SOY
drink. It is delicious. There is a little soy, a little chocolate and
a little fat from the soy and chocolate in it, but it has 90 calories
per 8 oz. (compared to 80 cal. per 8-oz of nonfat milk). It tastes
marvelous and my daughter also loves it. I think it tastes better than
chocolate milk. My daughter's friend tasted it as well and could not
tell it from chocolate milk.
If you want to get away from milk for any reason, you will want to try
this. I like it better than chocolate Silk, a competing soy product,
and it has fewer calories as well. dkw
