Default A little about me

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I'm setting my goal at 125 lbs. I now
weight 191. I am 5'5' tall, and I am 54 years old. Finding time to
eat right and exercise is really hard for me since I work from 7am to
3:30pm and take care of my elderly mother after work and on my days
off. My husband does some of the cooking, which is a great help, but
he does not know the meaning of low fat, low calorie, or even healthy!

My biggest problem is protion control and my love of pasta and bread so
my first step is to cut my portions down to regular size. Sweets are
another problem so I'm cutting down to 1 small serving per day. I love
lots of different fruits and vegies so I won't have a problem with
that.
Finding time for exesrcise is hard but feeling up to doing it after a
long day is my problem. I'm on my feet all day at work and have
problems with my knees. I have weights and a treadmill and I love to
walk around the neighborhood. With winter coming I will have to depend
on the treadmill a lot more. I pretty much know the basics of
nutrition but I need someone to give me a little push every now and
then to keep me on track. I'm depending on all of you to do that and I
will do the same for you. I hope everyone has a great day and good luck
to all of you.

I am 5'3" and my end goal weight is around 125, but more importantly, 125 at
20% bodyfat. I am not trying to change your mind about your end scale goal,
but you may find that you look healthy and fit at a higher weight, which may
make your weight loss seem a little less daunting.

Exercise at this point can be as simple as a brisk 30 minute walk every day.
You needn't sweat and breath hard to achieve an additional calorie burn,
although ultimately for good health you'll want to build up to that.

My husband also doesn't have a concept of "healthy" eating. In your
situation, it may be a good idea to stock up on some healthy ready to eat
foods, like nonfat yougurt, lowfat cottage cheese, salad fixin's etc. If he
cooks some meat for dinner and a bunch of unhealthy sides, dice up the meat
and make a salad with it. OR better yet, TEACH him to cook healthier.

You'll find if you cut back on the simple carbs for awhile, your cravings go
down quite a bit for them. One way to reduce how much you eat of the bad
stuff, is to eat giant portions of the good stuff. Like steamed veggies.
Eat a mountain of them at the beginning of dinner, and once the edge of your
hunger is taken off, then you can nibble at the pasta/bread.

I bake almost every week. My challenge is to come up with healthier
versions of what i love, and portion control...

Welcome! And like I said earlier, if you can commit to a 30 minute walk
every day, you'll see a difference.

I'm also 5'5" tall. I set myself a goal of 150, just to get into the range
that is considered healthy for my height. Once I get there, I will
re-evaluate. The reason I didn't set my goal lower at the outset is that I
do not know if the lower end of the weight range will be healthy or
appropriate for me, and I don't want to obsess on a goal that may not be a
good idea.

I have lost 68 pounds so far, and am at 167, 17 pounds from my goal. I
started my exercise program by walking--like you, I love to walk. Then I
added in swimming--not because I wanted to be seen in a swimsuit, but
because my daughters wanted to do lap swimming at the local pool, and
children under the age of 16 had to be accompanied by a parent in the water
with them to make sure they were swimming laps and not goofing around. I
rediscovered my love of swimming. And started doing water aerobics, too.
Then, since my girls are in karate 3 times a week, I joined the Curves 3
doors down from the dojo, and, while they do karate, I work out. My older
daughter started training for 5K runs with her teacher, so I would take her
around the neighborhood--her running and looping back, and me power walking.
My younger daughter joined us, and now we all sign up for 5K runs around the
area whenever they are available--3 so far and another next weekend. They
run--I still power walk. <smile> It took some adjusting of our schedules to
do all this, but it has been well worth the effort.

It sounds like you are off to a committed, goal-oriented start. I wish you
luck, and look forward to hearing about your progress!
