Thanks! |

When you say "low calorie", do you have a calorie count in mind? I consider
snacks under 250 to be decent. Here are some of my favorites
175 an ounce of almonds or other nuts
200 toast w/peanut butter
200 apple w/cheddar
200 apple with peanut butter
200 protein shake
200 greek yogurt w/honey and fresh berries mixed in
250 open faced sandwich - bread, light mayo, sliced turkey, slice of cheddar
grilled
most of my meals and snacks contain fresh fruit or veggies, but they are
more a component than the main item. |

Graham Crackers
Kashi TLC crackers
raw vegies (carrots, celery, jicima, kohlrabi, etc)
These can be well under 100 calories.

- a couple Wasa crackers
- the individually packed cookie containers - those are only 100 cals
and make a nice snack
- lowfat chocolate milk
- half a Tigers milk or Cliff bar
- cup of tea (sometimes just something warm is what I need for a snack)
- 1/2 bean salad
- air-popped popcorn with a little bit of salt
How low is low, btw? Going too low in calories cannot be real healthy.
I don't do lowcarb at all, I do lots of carbs and wokout nearly every
day (running mostly). Make sure you get enough healthy calories so your
body doesn't go into starvation mode. |

What you will probably find is that you want to eat a lot of food and
not take in very many calories because you will be reducing the
quantity of food already on the diet. Therefore, high fat snacks are
probably out. Snacks containing nuts and peanut butter are high in fat.
They will only give you a small quantity of food for the calories. Some
people are just fine eating once small piece of candy too, but not me.
I would rather eat nothing than take in 200 calories in a small
chocolate bar....and I love chocolate, but it is simply not on my diet.
What I would recommend is not typical snack food, but low-calorie food
that can be eaten as a snack and is filling. Here is my list. 1) Green
beans. They only contain 70 calories a can and if you put a little
artificially flavored breakfast syrup like Smuckers makes using
Splenda, you have a real treat. 2) Farina. At only 120 calories per
serving, it is also filling and gives you a lot of food for the small
amount of calories. 3) Oatmeal. It has 150 cal for a serving. I sweeten
it with Splenda. Like the beans and Farina, it is very quick to make in
the microwave, and filling. For me it is a no brainer. I can eat a
small handful of peanuts and get 120 calories and still have an empty
stomach or I can eat an entire bowl of Farina for those same 120
calories and I am full.
Don't forget to drink lots of water or diet pop or coffee to keep your
stomach full too. Good luck. dkw |

Let me get this straight... You eat green beans with sugary syrup on top? |

I've heard of that before. The thing that threw me off was they're
canned. Bleh...fresh green beans are found everywhere now. At least eat
frozen ones. The canned ones are so over cooked, like mush. |

No. Smuckers sugar free syrup has 20 calories for a quarter cup because
it is sweetened with Splenda, not sugar, and I use about 5 calories
worth bringing my grand total of an entire can of green beans with
syrup to 75 calories. dkw |

I find frozen beans to be tough and taste like erasers. I buy the
canned, no salt added beans. Nutritionally, they are just as good
according to nutritionists and I love them. I can heat them up in the
microwave in 1 min. Each to his own. dkw |

This works for some but not all. Personally I'm a firm believer in
training your body to eat smaller portions. That means small snacks,
small meals and small portions of liquid allowing your stomach to
naturally shrink.
To explain my reasoning try doing a google search for competitive eating
training methods. Their methods for stretching their stomachs before
a competition are pounding down low calorie foods and large amounts of
water. Certainly an extreme, but it does hint that this may be a step
in the wrong direction for some that are trying to learn to eat less
calories.

This is a very feasable way to maintain a weight loss long term. Some
people just can't tolerate a full stomach and others can. Being physically
full is different than reaching satiety. Eating large quantities of food
can lead to gastric disorders for some people (think GERD). Smaller but
fulfilling portions keep those kind of problems at bay.
There is a respectable program called Volumetrics which focuses on eating
more quantity (less caloric) to feel full. Both sides are legit but a
person has to do what works for their own needs.
I think another advantage to the portion control side is that you can lose
and maintain loss while still eating whatever you want.

Competitive eating is probably the single most disgusting thing I've ever
seen.

I could never stand plain yogurt before all the Greek-style yogurts
were introduced. The 2% fat is so good I can eat it plain, though I
stilllike to add a little honey. And a little honey is quite for you
anyway. |

OMG I love Fage USA greek yogurt. I love the 2%, add a little splenda and
honey. It's also wonderful with fresh fruit. And my old yogurt didn't come
close to 17g of protein! |

Do you really need to snack? Go a few days (4 as a minimum, try for a
whole week) with NO snacks and see if you still want them after that.
I've given up snacking completely (from maybe up to 8 high-cal,
high-fat snacks per day, such as chocolate bars, crisps or chips if you
speak American, flapjacks) and don't miss them at all.
Also, at risk of teaching a grandmother to suck eggs, don't forget to
include exercise - this is every bit as important as the diet. Every
little counts: parking further away in the carpark and adding a few
minutes walk each day; using stairs instead of lifts or escalators. |

The tea--or broth, for that matter--is an excellent idea. Sometimes I
just want something hot, or something salty (the broth). Sugar free hot
cocoa is also a nice treat this time of year (though we've yet to see
any snow 'round here).
My favorite snacks are fruit, cheddar cheese (1 ounce portion), wasa
bread, a teaspoon of peanut butter licked right off the spoon, or
carrots dipped in hot mustard. Simple stuff, and all close to 100
calories.

Veggies. But personally, I prefer fruit, especially apples.
