| | | A meal that satisfies my hunger I've just had 10 shrimps accompanied by a cup of rice. Delicious. I
feel perfectly satisfied with that meal and don't feel to eat anything
else, which is great. I remember when I was eating 6 slices of
whole-wheat bread with a popular brand of peanut butter and jam. Even
though these 6 slices had the double of calories of the shrimps and
rice, I was still hungry, if not hungrier! I wanted more and more.

What's the difference, if any, between shrimps and prawns? What can you
can accompany the shrimps with? |

Prawns are awesome! It's hard to believe how few calories they have for
such a large amount. I love 'em. |

I think it's a regional thing. Here in California, small shrimp are
shrimp, never with an "s" at the end and the large ones are prawns.
Strange, but, the US is a big, varied place. |

Here in Virginia we call them all shrimp (no "s") -- big ones are
often called "jumbo shrimp". When I was in Australia all the menus
offered prawns, but as I recall they weren't quite the same thing as
our shrimp.

This got me to wondering if there really was a difference. http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/crust/caribiol.html
Around here they're called shrimp. I have heard prawn but don't recall
where....must have been on vacation. |

That's like the difference between a rabbit and a hare - If they taste
the same and the only way to tell them apart is details in the bones,
I can consider them interchangible.

While watching FoodTV I thought that prawns are a type of crustacean
from the Med sea. They have bodies like shrimp and long thin claws
that look slightly what a lobster claw would look like when viewed with
one of those distorting mirrors at the carnival. For folks who don't
have
access to these critters, again interchangible in recipes. |

In the UK we have shrimps (always with an s) and prawns, and they are
reagrded as two separate sorts of shellfish. The prawns are bigger
and deeper pink, while the shrimps are quite small and paler. I love
both but I find prawns are the tastier of the two.

Last night I sauteed shrimp with garlic and red pepper
flakes in a little bit of olive oil, then tossed with
parsley, lemon zest and angel hair pasta. We loved it.

spices and herbs. |

No, not shrimp, crawdads are completely different. Crawdads, or mudbugs
as my grandfather used to call them, are yummy, but there's only a
little meat in the tail. I guess ya'll ain't never been to Na'h leans,
have ya?
Shrimp/prawns are awesome. So, you live in Texas and do not eat them??
Kinda odd, the Gulf is known for great shrimp/prawns! |

I'm a transplant from the Midwest, where we ate beef and pork and
chicken but no fish and definitely no shrimp. I don't like the taste of
any fish or shellfish. They smell nasty. I avoid the fish section of
supermarkets. Since they aren't that great a food, I have no desire to
try and get used to them either like you can do with many new foods.
Something about cholesterol and purines in shrimp and mercury in fish
keeps me away from it. Plus I'm vegetarian, so I don't even eat the
other meats. Obviously, some people love the things and do well eating
them. It just isn't for me. I'm sure I could choke one down if I tried
only the tail white meat and dipped it in butter....wait, I don't eat
butter either. |

I don't know where you lived in the Midwest but seafood is served
everywhere in my area (Ohio). This life-long Midwesterner prefers
seafood to beef and pork. Where did you live in the Midwest? I've
traveled through other Midwestern states and have never had a problem
ordering shrimp or other seafood. |

It wasn't until I moved to the midwest that I'd heard of a Friday fish fry.

Well, yeah, if you're a vegetarian, then you def. don't eat seafood.
But...there's plenty of fish in the Midwest, fyi. |

I guess you've been gone a while. Plenty of fishing going
on around here, and lots of seafood markets and
restaurants that have fresh seafood flown in daily. I can
find excellent shrimp, salmon, oysters, crab and, one of
our favorites, mussels, here in Wisconsin quite easily.
And then, of course, there are the Friday fish frys almost
everywhere. I'll admit we do have an awful lot of
steakhouses, though.
Take care,
eddiegirl
