Default New Contest!

I've decided to get down to it and start chronicling my adventures (or
misadventures) on the road to losing over 200lbs.
Thought of having a contest on my website to generate interest and give me
direction.

Visit www.iweighedmorethanjared.com and click on the contest page for
details.
Don't cost nuthin' but a little time and a quick email to enter...

Been a little depressed because of the sub-zero temps (couldn't jog in the
morning at the beginning of the week - temps were -18).
I just decided to get out there Wednesday, threw caution to the wind and
wore 2 pairs of jogging pants, thermal henley, sweatshirt, fleece jacket,
fleece hat,
runner's mask(at least that's what I call it, a neoprene face mask with
holes in it), & gloves.
Felt A LOT better. I thought of you guys, can't let you down with falling
off the wagon with the exercise...

On the plus side, down a pound - scale is going in the right direction.

Matty (I weighed more than Jared from Subway)
481/256/206
(starting weight/current weight/goal weight)

First mini goal achieved - 104lbs lost 10/26/04
Second mini goal achieved - 137lbs lost 01/28/05
Third mini goal achieved - 183lbs lost 09/30/05
Fourth mini goal achieved - 204lbs total lost 01/30/06
Fifth mini goal achieved - 233lbs total lost by 08/31/06
Sixth mini goal - 275lbs total lost by 06/30/2007 (goal weight)

That's AWESOME, Matty!

One of the folks on another group lives in Alaska. Do you think cold
weather keeps her from going out to run? Exactly.

She's not exactly in Barrow or anything. The weather in the Anchorage area
is generally more *mild* than the upper midwest during the winter. It's our
daily fun at school that the kids check the weather in various Alaskan
cities and compare it to here. Come on over and run outside here with -40
wind chills since you're so tough.

The folks that run in the Antarctic marathon are specifically training for
those conditions and it takes a lot of work. Not something a typical runner
would do or would be expected to do.

Letting the cold weather keep me inside because I actually have a brain in
my head.

I'm impressed! I've been avoiding outdoor running due to the cold --
guess I'll have to butch up :-). Today, though, I have a bad head
cold so am not planning to go out. I get very depressed when I get
sick because I can't exercise; we'll see about tomorrow. And maybe
I'll do a little strength training here at home later in the day.

My problem in the cold seems to be with breathing the air -- hurts my
lungs. I can walk -- and enjoy it -- in the extreme cold, but running
just doesn't work well when I've tried. Maybe it is a matter of
conditioning.

I'm soooooo glad we don't have to deal with your weather conditions here!
I've still only needed a hat once this winter! Glad the scales are going
the right way!

Depending on how cold it gets, there are times when any exposed skin is
subject to frostbite in a matter of minutes. I've done some cold weather
running and it's great, to a certain point, then it's just stupidity. I'm
planning to run the 5 mile ice race on Lake Superior at some point in my
life so it's not like I'm an actual wuss.

The breathing thing is both conditioning and your own limitations. I have
reactive airway syndrome and one of the triggers is extreme cold - we're
talking -15 and lower. I've been out running in -10 with no wind,
appropriately dressed and mouth covered. I've also skied in -40 and high
winds in Vermont (ski patrol - we had to go to the peak and get skiers off
of the mtn. due to dangerous conditions). I also snowshoe in below zero
temps and do things like ice fishing. Actual running is just a different
matter.

I don't even own any mouth-covering clothing item -- whatever these
might be called -- guess I'll have to check running catalogs. When I
walk in extreme wind chills I sometimes wrap a scarf over my face, but
clearly that wouldn't work for running. And keep in mind that I live
in Virginia :-). It's hard to develop the condition for exercising in
the cold since we have it so seldom. This last week or so we've been
setting records for cold. Two weeks ago we had temperatures in the
70s! And most of the winter has been well above average -- highs
around 50 or more most days. So we're just not used to this weather.
Everyone -- including me -- is getting colds, I think primarily
because the air is so dry.

A cowl is easy to make--I make my own from scrap fleece. Just cut fleece
so it's long enough to cover from over your nose to your chest, and long
enough to go around your head--I think I used 15" x 23". Hem long edges,
sew the short ends, and wallah!

You can double the material to make it thicker, or make the top hem a
little wider and thread elastic or a pull cord to make sure it stays up
when you're running.

Hope you feel better soon, Chris.

I also use a bandana sometimes, especially when it's not super cold - though
I do own a fleece cowl.
