| | | New Discoveries & Surprises Let's take asd back from the latest stream of spammers....
I've been losing weight and getting into shape again since Sept 25th.
So far, I've lost 32 pounds (just lost another one) and I don't think a
day goes by when I don't find some wonderful surprise that came about
from getting healthy.
For instance, I live in SF and it's very hilly here. We have some very
steep hills. I live about 1.25 miles from work, so I walk to work.
Before I lost weight, I used to take the bus sometimes home. I got very
lazy and the distance seemed like a long ways. Mind you, I've been
pretty active most of my life, but, I got into the habit of just not
walking like I should.
Now, it's no big deal to walk up and down the hills home. In fact, I
loook forward to it and can't imagine taking the stressful bus home.
Funny how things change for the better.
Anyone else have some new suprise? |

Quite a few for me. Feel better, sleep better, "function" better. I had
really ballooned up over 30 years. Since October I've lost 46 lbs and have
increased the exercise program dramatically. Blood pressure has dropped
from mid 150's over 92 to under 120/63 .. often lower. Pulse rate has also
dropped from about 80-82 to under 70 ... often low 60's. The doc had
started me on some high blood pressure pills, but told me to throw them away
last month.
One of my newfound enjoyments is running into people I haven't seen for a
few months. Just happened this morning at the store. They call over, "Hey,
Dick", and, as we engage in exchanging pleasantries, they have this
quizzical look on their face, like they just can't figure out what's
different. I've gotten to the point now where I say, "It's OK, it's me ...
I've lost a bunch of weight".

Stressful bus is right! Just hearing them! I used to live on Geary St.
38 Geary, Transbay terminal!
38 Geary Ocean Beach!
Day and night! ARG!
I used to work a meeting at the church on Franklin and Geary, and would walk
back home to 25th and Geary. other than smelling the stinky buses, it was a
neat walk!! Only problem is when I would stop at the Mervyns (Masonic) and
then take the bus home with the packages!!!

The thing is, after a while you get to a point where when you run into
someone you haven't seen in a long time, they have no idea who you
are. I just find this awkward rather than enjoyable. But I've been
at goal long enough now that it doesn't happen often. Now I know
quite a few people who never knew me when I was heavy -- or who have
kind of forgotten what I once looked like. (It's interesting that you
can almost erase the existence of your former self, but it seems you
can.)

The girls (aka. Women) are giving me more appreciative looks.
For the record, eleven years ago I was at 285. During that time I
dropped to 220-225. Since March of 06 I have dropped to 189 and I think
I am in that last 10 pound range thinking that ultimately 175 will work.
Oh and I am 5'10" and have been reading this group for a couple of
months and for the most part have enjoyed it.

That's impressive. Congrats!
Any idea of what your "maintaining" calorie intake would be (is) at 189 lbs?
Do you exercise?
I am curious as we are the same height and my goal is about 185 lbs. (from
260). Although the "charts" say I should be lower, I want to stabilize at
185 for a while.

Yesterday my neighbor commented that I looked so "vital and healthy". Hmm,
hadn't slept the previous 2 nights because of teething kid, but wow! It
must be the healthy living. Good diet and exercise have done wonders.
Today I was jogging on the treadmill, alternating between walking and
jogging really. It's so HARD! I'm still really struggling with heart rate.
But I plugged along for 45 minutes. When I went into the women's locker
room, a woman commented how in shape I must be, that she could never run
that much! I tried to tell her that I was really struggling, and not that
great at it, but she said I was a "natural". She said she wished she was as
athletic as I am. God, if only she knew...
Weird. I never thought I made it look easy. I am certainly no "natural".
But if that is what it looks like to others, COOL!!!! |

Yeah, I know.....the upside is that I spent all my money on a plane
ticket to Norway for an April metal festival I've gone to before. I
have many close friends there, including one of my best friends, so
it's going to be great to see them after a 3-year absence. The last
time I saw them I was about 15 pounds heavier than I am now. I expect
to lose at least 12 more pounds before my trip. I can't wait for them
to see how I look!
Hopefully, next month I'll have a bit of money for clothes. |

Good topic, Martha.
I lost 25 pounds a few years ago, climbed a little last
year and am now (slowly) losing that last 5. I love
feeling slender and strong. I enjoy being able to wear any
clothing I wish (staying age-appropriate, of course :-) ).
I am a very fast walker, and I love feeling like I can
almost fly at times - I'll bet you runners really feel
that way. I never felt that way when I was heavier. I love
it when people say I'm "tiny", although I always roll my
eyes modestly and say "well, I have to keep working at
it".
Take care,

We live 4.5 miles from DH's work so DH tries to ride his bike to work a few
days a week, especially this time of year when the weather is nice and not
too hot (southern Florida here). I have started riding with him most of
the way. I get an 8 mile ride in before I get ready for work, and know that
he has arrived safely. Unfortunately, I'm about 30 miles of interestate
driving to my work, so I don't have the luxury, but I have gone back to my
lunch time walks most days of the week. 9 yrs ago when I started working
there, we were one of the only buildings out in the new corporate park, but
that has changed over time. I still see the Sandhill Cranes grazing for
grubs, the bald eagles soaring overhead and the occasional deer while I'm
walking in the new development area at lunch. It is still quite nice to
have all the nature around me to keep me entertained on my daily walks. |

Yeah, walking in town sucks. I still don't get how people can be so devoted
to cycling to work. I tried it once, and it was scary, noisy, dangerous,
and my lungs hurt from breathing car exhaust. And yet, especially here,
cycling is so huge. |

I'll be 40 in a couple of weeks, and I am stronger, fitter, and
healthier than I was twenty years ago.
This month I competed in my first fitness competition, and received a
silver medal. The next competition is a broad jump, so I'm now training
for that.

The ride we do to DH's work isn't bad. You know my neighborhood and
its 1 mile from the house to get out of the subdivision, then up that
one road which is not well traveled and has a bike lane, then we cut
thru a condo neighborhood, past a golf course, the police station, then
the kids athletic fields then we continue down a housing neighborhood
until we get to the main drag in town. <Dally - we take that back
road that goes by your MIL's old place> ... Then I turn around and
take the same trek home. Its quiet and at 6:30am, there is very
little traffic. There are bike lanes most of the way.
DH takes the main drag home and rides the sidewalk. He finds that
more comfortable to him than riding that other route. The other route
sees more traffic in that 4 - 5pm hour that he is riding home, so he'd
rather take the main drag sidewalks for safety.
If I lived within cycling commute distance, I would do it more often.
We dont' live in a big enough "city" where its not that bad. (heck, in
the summer's I cycle to the Y for my workouts, which is 4.5 miles from
the house - easy way to get my cardio in and enjoy the outdoors. I
don't do it in the winter because the lack of daylight). |

Well, as someone who's just a little over a year from reaching 60, I
do feel I must point out that very few of my contemporaries -- even
though they're mostly less fit than I -- are doddering around on
canes! (Personally, I'm going to hip-hop class tomorrow morning :-).)

About the same here except I'll be 64 Sunday I'm in much better
condition than I was when I was in my 40's. I've always exercised but for
the past few years I've been doing cycling. Last year I biked 2400+ miles,
including my first century. I'm aiming for 3000 miles this year but I'm not
sure I'll try another century.
Now that winter has finally arrived in Ohio I've been riding my bike on the
trainer. I also ordered the Cyclo-core/Cyclo-Zen DVD's for off-season
training for cyclist. They arrived this week and I'm getting ready to start
the program this weekend.

Unfortunately this has happened to me. I've kept in touch with some of my
childhood friends and it's sad to see their health decline due to bad diet
and no exercise. Most of them suffer from the diseases associated with
obesity and lack of exercise. Two have passed away from heart attacks and
I'm sure they could have been avoided if they had paid more attention to
their diet and exercise.

Well, I'm just past 60 and certainly don't recognize myself as how you
are picturing your friends when they reach that age. Despite still
being overweight, although much less so than I was, and having yo-yo
dieted and binged my way through the last 40 years, I'm still able to
walk 12 miles in a day and do most of the things I want to do. When
you get to 60 you may find it doesn't feel as old as it might seem to
you now. A lot of it is attitude of mind, of course

Thanks to both of you... I never plan to stop. I'll be retiring in a
couple years and I have way too many biking trips planned to quit the
diet/exercise program.
I keep telling my family I'll be purchasing a trike when I'm too old to
balance on the two wheelers

Thanks.
To be completely honest I don't know what my caloric intake is. I run
3.5 to 4 miles four days a week and do ab work and stretching in the
evenings five or more days a week. I pretty much have been trying to go
by the cup of carbs(rice, grains, etc) with 4-5 oz of lean protein and
plenty of green veggies plus fruit (apples) for snack. I try not to eat
anything with a lot of fat content except for peanuts, which I will eat
as a snack, but then only an eighth of a cup. I try to listen to my body
and only eat when it is hungry.

God, I hope not Actually I like the running. I consider myself to
still be in the burn mode not maintenance yet, so I do try to keep up
with the exercise routine at all costs. Once I get to my "vision" I'm
hoping that if I miss a day or week of running it will be okay. I think
the key to my success is reinventing myself and living a new lifestyle
that will be good for the rest of my life. The old me didn't do a lot of
junk food, but did excess amounts of say lasagna or the 28 oz.
porterhouse. The new me does a 3" x 3" square of lasagna or a 6 oz. cut
of steak. I don't do steak often, but will on occasion. Oh and I leave
any fat on the plate.
