| | | New Goal Setting for 2007 My gym is running a New Year's Resolution contest. My person goals are
to, by February 28, to lose another 15 pounds, and leg press 370 pounds
- two sets of 12. Also, I'm going to concentrate on my "biking muscles"
in preparation for the return of good weather in April.
The long term goals I want to achieve this year are to lose the
remaining 60 or so excess pounds, and for the first time in my life
live as a non-fat person. I don't say thin, because I doubt I can be
thin with my build. I'll settle for the classic male shape - broad
shoulders and chest, narrow waist, etc.
I also want to bike, hike, walk, run, travel, and do all the things I
was unable to do inside my self-made tomb of blubber. Here's to my
doing all of them in 2007. What are you going to do next year?

I'd say you are well on your way. 110 lb lose so far is amazing.
My goal for 2007 is to achieve my weight goal of 195, continue the exercise
and maintain at that level. After that, it's time to give up the
cigarettes.
Ultimate goal is to not be picked last for the backyard basketball games
when choosing up sides.

Great goals Neil. Thanks for posting this. I've never
thought about putting my goals out in this format before.
Don't laugh - I have fairly modest goals:
Increase my daily walking to an hour a day (this has
decreased lately to 30 minutes or so)
Increase my free weights to 10 pounds arms and 12 pounds
legs (been coasting lately)
Maintain my healthy eating plan
Maintain my 3-4 days of exercise at Curves
Reach my weight goal of 130 pounds and maintain within a
few pounds
Use up my accrued vacation in 2007 so I don't lose hours
as I will in 2006 (not asd-related, but I need to get that
goal out there)
And, I'm not waiting until 2007 to start working on these
goals - I'm starting today. Our dog Eddie will be happy
with the longer walk.
Take care,

Do you mean online, or just setting specific targets? I believe in
setting targets, if only so I have something to aim towards. I spent
too many years passing off vague comments like "I'll eat light" as
serious weight control.

Neil, I meant on line. I am a long-time reader of and
short-time poster to asd. It was only recently (when the
newsgroup was dealing with what I thought were some
"trollish" posts) that I decided to contribute to the
group by posting regularly instead just using the group as
a source of inspiration and motivation for myself.
I often set goals, but posting goals seems to formalize
them, or increase my accountability in a different way.
Again, thanks for starting this thread and getting me
thinking about 2007.

**I've almost reached my original goal of 150 pounds (down from 235). I'm
resetting my goal to 135, which will be good on my 5'5" frame. I want to
get there in 2007.
**Continue with daily exercise, including 3days/week at Curves, walking,
recumbent exercise cycle.
**Move from running 5Ks to running 10Ks.
**Continue with my healthy way of eating, including planting a greater
variety of veggies in my garden this year.
**Remember the word "no" is a great stress reducer. =c)
Those are my health goals. My other goal is to continue to try to
understand the teenage mind, as I now have 2 teenage girls. <sigh> =c) |

Great goals, including the one regarding the word "no".
Can't help at all with the one about teenage girls, but

My goals for 2007 are:
- Get weight down to 135 by June. I've been maintaining around 140- 142.
At my height (5'3") 5 lbs makes quite a difference in how my
clothing fits in the waist area. I also feel losing a few pounds would
possibly increase my speed on the bike. I know it would make a
difference when it comes to climbing those hills.
- Do weight training 2 times a week. I've slacked off on this.
- 3,000 miles on the bike. My total for this year is 2,300 miles.

| | | Re: New Goal Setting for 2007 Awesome idea!!
I joined the YMCA 2 months ago and LOVE working out there. I signed up for
a new 10 week program called "Move It To Lose It" in where there are groups
of people who measure and weigh in. There are competitions and twice a week
we work with a trainer and get food tips. It is very similar to The Biggest
Loser and I'm looking forward to it!!!!
So, for 2007 and beyond..............
* Hit my goal weight of 140 (from 170).
* Workout at the "Y" 3 times per week
* Swim at least once a week
* Watch what I eat
That's all I can think of! 2007 is right around the corner!

| | | Re: New Goal Setting for 2007 My goals for 2007 -- at least with respect to ASD sorts of things --
are just to maintain my weight and keep up my weekly exercise routine:
3 days lifting + yoga, 3 days running, 1 day hip-hop class. (I do
take occasional breaks from the 7-day/week exercise, and vary things
when travel or weather require it.) I've given up setting goals for
specific fitness-related accomplishments, as I found it was making
exercise less fun for me, but I will continue trying to push myself a
bit. (And I always lift heavy, by the way -- no little pink dumbbells
for me :-) .)

very reasonable and realistic

Mine are both health and personal:
* Find a new job (being a desk jockey and on commission is not a healthy

* Train/enter my first race

* Get my public speaking off the ground
(2 engagements set so far, 01/14/07 & -2/27/07)
* Achieve ATM Bronze
(next Toastmasters designation)
* Lose these last 50 or so lbs through increased exercise/strength training
* Write a book on my experiences
* Bring Analise Elizabeth home to be with her new forever family...
Good luck and blessings to all on the new year!

I was thinking on doing the Macatawa Triathalon, but it involves 1/2mi swim,
22.8mi bike, & 5k run. Not sure if I could make the 22.8mi bike and then a
5k run after that...

You could try. It will certainly give you something to aim for. Heck,
an email correspondent from rec.bicycle.misc has suggested I consider
racing in a century, and I can't even ride my bike yet!

The triathalon is in July, so that gives me 6 or so months to train for it.
Might take me 4 or 5 hours but yeah, I could at least try...

If you train for that, I'll train for a bike race. Let me look for one
being held in September.

You should be ready by September. I see Bike Sport has a list of charity
rides in your area. These are excellent rides as they are usually
non-competitive, offer several mileage options, provide rest stops and are
fun!
Having participated in the Livestrong ride in your area, I don't believe I
would recommend it to a new rider. The shortest route was 45 miles and
there were HILLS in it I'm sure this ride was 35 miles of hills with a
10 mile flat section thrown in at the halfway point so I could recover for
the trip back to the starting point.

Do you think I could make the June or July races? The July one is six
months away. It's being held the same time as Matty's event.

PA is not Ohio, Beverly. We have hills here. Just consider yourself
lucky the race wasn't in Pittsburgh! |

If you can get enough riding in by June and feel comfortable on the bike I
would think you would be ready for one of the shorter routes.

We don't have a lot of hills in SW Ohio. Those that we do have are spaced
far enough apart to allow recovery before tackling the next hill. I've been
doing some hill climbing rides and *will* be ready for those PA hills next
time.

OK. The die is ready to be cast. The MS Bike-a-thon's PA Dutch Tour is
in July. I am going to ride in it. |

Are you sure you want to start with such a long route? Isn't this a
150 mile ride in two days? Or maybe I'm looking at the wrong ride on
the MS website. http://main.nationalmssociety.org/si...E_PAE_homepage |

It's my understanding that in previous years they've had shorter rides
alongside the 150 mile one. I agree 150 miles would be too much. |

That sounds much better. My first organized charity ride was 15 miles and I
had a wonderful time. Go for it!

tour works. How much does it cost and where do you spend the night
for instance? and what do you mean that you are stregnthening the
bicycling muscles? Which ones are those and how do you do it? Thanks.

Details are to be posted at: http://www.ms150biketour.org/
I don't think they have full information available yet on the July
ride.

Quads and hamstrings. Muscles in the legs.

Not even a week into the new year and I am changing my goals. I've
decided to end at 200 pounds, instead of 220. Less weight means I can
take those hills better. :-)

With your newfound passion for the bicicle, it will probably be an
attainable goal, Neil! Go for it! =c) |

It's a still unrequited passion. Excelsior and I aren't spending that
much time together. We are leaving in a few minutes to ride in Valley
Forge Park, however. No doubt details will be on ASD sooner or later.
