Good Afternoon,
I am at my wit's end about my weight and need support. Since high
school I have been overweight and have gone up and down many times.
This is the highest I have weighed and of course at my age it's not a
good thing. In addition to my weight problem I have all the side
effects that come with it, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, onset
of type 2 diabetetes, knees that ache, back problems and the list goes
on!!
I have tried every diet and exercise program but always give up. This
time though I have to get real serious because of my health. I hate
feeling like this and want to be able to run and play with my
grandchildren.
Trying to pick a diet with no carbs, no sugar, little salt and being
very picky I am having a tough time.
I would love to hear from anyone that has been here and has turned it
around. Unless you have had this struggle it's hard to understand.
Thanks for listening and I hope you can help!!!

I've been there and you're not going to have long term success by trying to
cut out an entire food nutrient group -- you're just setting yourself up for
a big fall. You've probably given up in the past because you've tried so
many extremes that are non-sustainable for you in the long term.
It can be done but you have to take a long term perspective and start
looking at what lifestyle changes you can make ONE HABIT at a time. You
need to work towards a Healthy Meal Plan and a Healthy Exercise Plan that
ARE sustainable!

Ok, first of all, no more diets. You need a permanent change in your way of
eating and way of life that will support good health and weight. It is not
a temporary calorie reduction to reach a certain weight, at which time you
return to "normal" eating. So, you have to find a method that works for
you. Don't worry about any of the commercial "programs" or plans that are
out there. There are a million ways to reach a healthy weight, and you can
do it without feeling like you're starving or being deprived.
Eating is common sense. Go through your cupboards and get rid of the crap.
Anything that is highly processed like cookies, chips, etc. Start learning
about nutrition. Build your food around lean proteins, whole fresh fruits
and veggies, whole grain breads and cereals, high fiber foods, etc. Cut out
the simple sugars, sodas, fruit juices, pasta, potatoes, white bread and
switch with the whole grain stuff. Fat isn't evil, but high in calories, so
use sparingly and avoid saturated fats like butter.
Eat small meals throughout the day. Drink plenty of water. Count your
calories diligently in fitday. Exercise - even a 30 minute walk will burn
200 calories.
Make small changes. Don't try to do it all at once. If you normally drink
several cans of soda each day, try replacing one or all with diet soda,
water, iced tea, etc. If you normally eat fast food 4 times a week, try
cutting it down to twice. If you've been drinking whole milk, switch to 2%. |

What is your doctor recommending? With diabetes your doctor needs to know
everything.
From a non-doctor, last I heard you have to exercise and eat carefully. So
please get back on the bandwagon. Every time you want to fall off, try to
put it off just one more day. Tell yourself that -- it's only for one more
day. Before long you'll look back and find out you've put together the
longest run of exercise and eating right you've ever experienced. |

Hi Cindy,
My first suggestion is that you don't view this as a diet. This is not
a coat you can put on and take off. It is a genuine lifestyle change.
Perhaps you weren't ready for it before. You may want to view all the
previous attempts as trial runs for the real thing. This is for real.
You may want to post some specifics, such as weight, height, age, what
you normally eat, and what sort of exercise you normally take. Then
people will be able to make more specific suggestions. Right now my
only suggestion is that you can lose weight, if you truly want to do
so.

Cindy,
Here's what I found interesting about your comment as well
as most dieters, "I have tried every diet and exercise program but always
give up."
Here's my suggestions:
1: Set A Goal (Now)
2: Consentrate on losing Body Fat, not weight.
3: Find out what your daily calorie intake is, and reduce it
by 20% YES, count calories!
4: Eat 5 times a day with the proper macronutrient ratio's: (ex:
6-9-12-3-6,
eat every three hours essentially)
5: Exercise regularly.
6: Learning how to eat correctly is a diet of the mind MORE than
it is a diet of the body. In order to stop the madness you must
focus thoughts AWAY from the "splurging" when you feel like it.
But if you're eating 5 times a day, you probably WON'T feel like it!!
7: Drink water.
8: Remember, as previous posters have stated, It's a LIFESTYLE change,
it has to be, or you will continue to eat more calories than you burn.
The reason why you "give up" is because of your habit of consentrating
and focusing on a desire. Either change the desire or change the focus.
Remember, "turning it around" has more to do with long term mindset than it
does
with diet. It won't happen over night, but step by step it can happen. |

>1...get hungry and stay that way
Personally, I never found it necessary or desirable to remain in a
state of hunger. What is important is learning to differentiate
between hunger and other things that make us want to eat. To do this,
you do need to experience hunger. So at least at first, I'd wait
until you actually feel hunger before eating something. And then eat
slowly and observe when you no longer feel hunger, then stop. It can
take a while to get attuned to the feelings of hunger and non-hunger.
(I didn't want to say "fullness", as many people are used to eating to
a point they'd call "full" that is probably way more than they should
eat.)
>2...weigh everyday
Many people find this works badly for them, for a variety of reasons.
As there are many things that make weight fluctuate, the daily
direction is not always down even when one is doing all the right
things. When I was losing I generally weighed every couple of days --
basically whenever I was at the gym changing clothes -- as I didn't
have a scale at home. I've recently bought a scale and now weigh
daily. (I bought the scale because now that I'm retired I seldom
change clothes at them gym -- just go and return home in my workout
wear.)
>3...walk to take your mind off the hunger...hunger comes in waves
Well, walking is good, but I don't think this is the main reason,
since I don't believe in living with hunger. But do by all means
walk, or exercise in whatever ways you can. It's all good.
>4... no tv other than dvd...watching a flying hamburger makes me want
>to eat one
A strange rule. I think it's necessary at some point to learn to
resist temptations rather than just hope to avoid them all. I never
gave up TV while losing weight -- nor now in maintenance. (In fact,
since we've gotten TiVo I've become kind of a TV junkie :-). I've
never been someone who needs to eat while watching TV, though.)
>5...never give up
I'll agree with this one :-).
>6...eat three meals a day...don't skip breakfast
At least three meals -- I like smaller meals plus a couple of snacks.
There's a lot of evidence favoring eating every 3 hours or so. And
there's also a lot of evidence suggesting breakfast is important to
weight loss, though some dieters seem to do fine without it.
Personally, I found that when I didn't overeat in the evening I woke
up hungry :-).
>7...pray to jesus...ask for help
I think it's a bit presumptuous to suggest this to everyone. Not
everyone on this list is of the Christian faith. However, there's
probably a benefit to seeking help from whatever higher power one
believes in. (I gather that groups like AA advocate this, without any
specific denominational or even religious specifics. I'm not sure I
understand exactly how that works, though.)

I meant to go on here to say that others have found it worked better
for them to weigh weekly or monthly, or just to go by clothing fit.
Lots of people have real psychological issues with the numbers on the
scale. You need to find what works for you.

Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're not hungry. My wife doesn't
understand why everyone can't do this. Of course she's been a skinny-minnie

I think it's important to know hunger, understand hunger, and know when
you're actually hungry, vs. thirsty, bored, etc. But I don't believe it is
important to feel hunger. In fact, I think if I get hungry, I tend to
overeat. I do much better and stay much lower in my calories if I
anticipate my body's fuel needs and eat every few hours rather than waiting
until I get hungry.

I do. In fact, I weigh far too often. However, some people will absolutely
be devastated by the normal ups and downs over the course of a diet and for
them, weighing once a week is much better.

I've been overweight since about 10 yrs old. Earlier this year, I
peaked at 120kg (approx 260 lbs). I was starting to have trouble doing
what I normally did (i.e. never had back pains or bad joints, but I was
getting out of breath walking up a flight or two of stairs). Also have
a long, long history of diabeties in the family. So I started.
Both my diet and exercise levels were a problem, but I decided to only
attack one at a time. In the past, when I have tried both, I would
play one off against the other (e.g. I've eaten really healthy today,
so I don't have to exercise; or I've walked an extra half hour so I can
get pizza for dinner).
Firstly, I started eating breakfast. Very tough habit to break.
Secondly, I cut out crap takeaway for lunch. No smoko truck in the
morning for a pie or whatever. No McDonald's for lunch. I started to
live on Subway sandwiches for lunch (occassionally allowing myself a
treat of a Chicken Fillet instead of Turkey/Ham).
Finally, I would have stirfries or salads for dinner. Also started to
concentrate of only cooking enough for a single meal instead of cooking
for three nights in one sitting, because I would usually have a second
helping and it would only last two nights anyway.
The best thing I did was round up two people to whom I would report
fairly religiously on what I had done and what I had lost. Knowing
that I would have to do that every Monday morning was really good, as I
never wanted to say that I had held steady or gained over the week.
After I lost about 5-6 kg, I started bringing more exercise into my
diet. Running was the best for me, until I stressed out my knee. Got
a support for it, and back to it. At the moment, it has slacked off as
work has drastically increased, but it is still at a reasonable level.
I walk to my PO Box every day (roughly half hour) and try to be as
active as I can in a desk job.
I have plateaued at 100-103kg, but I have now kicked into second gear
again and have started bring it down. I can almost guarantee that, as
of tomorrow morning, I will be under 100kg for the first time in FKW.
The kickstart for this has been water. I am nearly drowning myself in
water (approx 3-4 litres per day). It runs through me pretty
constantly, but I know it is doing good and the gut is noticeably
disappearing.
The best advice I can give based on what has worked for me is
1) Don't get into a plan if you can't see yourself sticking to it.
I would suck at low-carb because carbs are really really good.
2) Water, water, water, water, water.
3) Don't slash your wrists over a cheat or two. You're only human
and it is no reason to give up.
4) Find someone to help through it (although this NG probably
satisfies this quite well). In the past, I have dieted on the sly, and
it has been too easy to give up when no one knows.

Did you check your HDL (good) vs LDL (bad) cholesterol levels?
Perhaps fats are a good place to begin.
+ Limit trans fats and saturated fats as much as possible. These are
primary causes of high blood pressure and heart disease.
+ Get 3g per day of omega-3 fatty acid--it helps with blood pressure,
heart disease, and diabetes. Tuna, salmon, flaxseed oil, and walnuts
are good sources.
+ It's recommended that you get 20% of your energy from fats--aim for
monounsaturated fats as much as possible.

hunger gives an edge...more focused...alive...aware that you lose when
you are comfortably full...i'm not talking about starving...like 6-7 on
a scale of 1-10

I'd say, learn what hungry feels like... and then eat when hungry. Educate
yourself, what's healthy foods (forget about low salt, low fat, low carb,
low taste low appeal, thing nutritious) Also, consider what you would take
as a portion, and put half in your plate. Eat slowly, give your stomac 20
minutes before going for seconds if you're still hungry (bet you won't).
> 2...weigh everyday
Some do, I wouldn't. WI everyday is permitting the natural variation in your
weight to play with your mind. If you can take that, go ahead, I don't want
to stress. I WI once a week, look at the average over 3-4 weeks and that's
plenty for me.
> 3...walk to take your mind off the hunger...hunger comes in waves
If you're really hungry eat, if you're not sure, walk it off. Don't go for a
long walk on an empty stomac, even more if you've got diabetes.
