| | | Newby :) Hi
I've been lurking well..ever since I started my "diet" last December.
Soaking up the good advice and tremendous results from everyone. Just
wow. I never knew that one could be quiet large and lose weight without
surgery. Well I knew it, but just didn't see it anywhere.
I started at 318 and am now at 265.
Started at the suggestion of my new doctor actually. We went through
all the formal stuff and then he just plainly said "So what are you
going to do about your health/weight?" I don't know what I was
doing...hoping no one "official" noticed I guess. That and being
weighed at another doctor's kinda shook me too. Something about showing
the numbers in front of someone else.
I'm doing the Diet Power thing and counting my calories and ashamedly
that's about it. I know I need to exercise but really haven't done any.
A few 15 minute walks here and there but that doesn't really count. My
problem basically is [well aside from being lazy and being afraid of
ppl mocking me when they see such a "fat" person trying to walk fast]
that I don't like to walk unless I'm going somewhere. Have an end
point. I'm kinda embarrassed and shy and afraid to go to a gym.
Right now I'm going through a plateau that I know I need to exercise to
get out of. And I think I need to stop weighing myself. Usually every
morning I'm right there but this jumping from 265 to 260 and back again
and back again is just destroying my motivation.
Anyway, sorry for the long introduction

Now is a great time to add in exercise. Walking is fantastic. You don't
even need to go really fast, and it's not neccessary to breath hard and have
your heart pound. I mean, to get the cardio benefit, you'll want to work up
to that, but you'll burn plenty of calories just by normal walking. Here's
what you do - get a pair of really comfortable shoes. Get yourself a
walkman or ipod or whatever and put some jazzy music on it,
and..........WALK! Seriously, see if you can commit yourself to 30 minutes
per day. I'm guessing you'll burn around 200 calories just by doing that.
It'll make a difference - 200 calorie per day deficit adds up to almost 1/2
lb per week.
If you want to get really high tech, get yourself a pedometer to count your
steps and track your progress, or a heart rate monitor, which also tracks
your heartrate and # of calories burned, which will feel good to see adding
up.
When a person is as overweight as you are, (no offense I hope), exercise is
pretty daunting. So, start small. If you can't commit yourself to 30
minutes every single day, try starting at 5. Do it every day at the same
time of day, regardless of weather. Slowly build up. But do it
religiously, to make it a habit like brushing your teeth. Pretty soon,
you'll feel bad if you DON'T do it.
Oh, and with regards to people mocking you... the only fat people I ever
mock are those that are stuffing big macs in their faces. I NEVER mock
someone who is trying to improve their health. |

You'll lose the rest as you build up your exercise. Remember exercise isn't
just about losing weight. It's about being healthy all over.

I've only just recently jumped in here too, and am in a fairly similar
boat.
What has helped me with regular exercise is a destination. When I
finish work, I get home and then I immediately walk from my house to
the Post Office to collect mail from my PO Box. It's now become such a
regular thing that I barely notice I am doing it - just a normal part
of the day. On ocassions, I skip it (like Friday due to the office
Christmas party), but it is only occassionally. My round trip is about
40 minutes, so it is just a nice distance.
The key to exercise is to find something you enjoy doing. I'll never
be a gym junkie because I really don't enjoy it. I quite enjoy walking
and, while I hate it during, I even enjoy running.
You've topped 50lb of loss on diet alone. Once you add a little
exercise, you'll see it start to fall off again.

Excellent!

I bought an iPod Nano so I can listen to lectures about new
technologies as I walk. It helps get past the feeling that I'm wasting
time. The Nano fits in your shirt pocket, and you can download lectures
for free from iTunes.

Has anyone mocked you? I've only been doing this a short while, but the
people I've passed on the road have been friendly. They're joggers, or
mothers pushing strollers, or couples going for walks. I get the same
feeling as you, though, when I consider swimming. There are some things
I won't do until I lose some weight.

Congratulations! This is impressive.
Maybe you could add more walking into your daily routine - parking farther
away from your destination, taking stairs instead of elevator, etc. I never
liked to walk without a destination but found it more enjoyable when I
listened to music.
I'm not overly fond of regular gyms myself but did join Curves for one year
and liked it. It's just for women and most of them are just getting into
exercise. It might be something you would enjoy and not feel uncomfortable
attending.
Welcome and I hope to see you posting regularly.

You are going somewhere. That's the entire point of losing weight.
Have an end

Don't be. You are there to exercise, not to model. If someone stares,
ignore them. Or feel sorry for them; those poor folks have never seen a
fat person before.

Then do it. The desire to exercise grows with the ability to exercise.
In other words, the more you do, the more you will want to do.

That's true. The Curves women are all shapes and sizes, and can work at
their own level as they get into exercise. It would be a good starter
place. Plus walking--that would be great! |

That's good to hear. In fitness magazines I've picked up at the library
they always seem to state that unless you're working at some super
level [well super to me] and raising your heart rate to a certain
number that it's all pretty useless.

Good idea. I tend to make excuses really easily. The whole "well, it's
raining so I don't want to get wet" type of thing. Which is laughable
seeing as I live in/near a rainforest so it's always going to be
raining in the fall .

That's the mind set I'm trying to get into. I really want to build up
my fitness level so I can keep up w/ my niece and nephew. Right now
after a few minutes of swinging my niece upside down I'm pooped out and
have to stop. Bugs me that when she continues saying 'upside down,
upside down' to me that I can't usually do anymore for at least 5-10
minutes. |

I used to do this when I lived in the city. Just being forced to use
the public transit system made me walk a lot and while I stayed
overweight I was in better shape. Unfortunately I've moved into the
outskirts of another town where there is no transit system so I
basically drive everywhere now and there is nothing nearby [within at
least an hour of walking]. Excuses I know. There are quite a few
walking paths so I could use those. Just a matter of getting my
motivation up and my embarrassment of being obese and exercising down. |

Ooh that's a good idea. I have been looking at one of those for awhile
in the store. Just kinda lusting for it. I noticed today when I was at
the library that they have quite a few books on CD that I thought might
be good to try out. Even the ones on tape if I can dig out my tape
player.

When I calm down my overactive imagination I see that I've only had
friendly meetings with ppl the few times I've gone walking. I was
mocked quite a lot in school and prolly am just holding on to that
horrible feeling. Its been a heck of a long time since then I should
get over it.

I have been doing this lately. When I go shopping in a mall I've been
making myself walk all the way around on the outside before going in
and enjoying myself.

Ooh, that sounds good. The news around town is that we are supposed to
be getting one sometime in the new year. Right now the only gym in town
kinda intimidates me.

That's true. I found that way with "dieting". In the beginning it was
near impossible to cut my calories/portions without feeling hungry and
the more I did it the more I wanted to continue. The more results I saw

Oh, come on, the water's fine. Wear a tee-shirt in the water if you
don't want to show off your stomach and chest. Swimming is a lot of
fun, and it's great exercise. Why hide? Obesity is hiding; you aren't
hiding anymore, so why not swim in public?

I've always wonder how much I really was burning off during my hour
long walks. I think that fitday gave the total as around 200, but that
seemed low to me. It would be low by your above estimate also. So I
did a little research and found a calorie/walking calculator at http://www.3fatchicks.com/Fitness/Wa...ng_Calculator/
.. I was happy to see that according this walking for 1 hour at 2.5
miles an hour at a weight of 182 I burn off 300 calories. Nice! I don't
know how accurate this thing is. But I hope it's right.
I did the numbers for Beautiful Cheese as well. 30 minutes at 2.5
miles an hour for half an hour comes out to being 156 calories. Pretty
close to your guess.

Note that 2.5 miles an hour is slow, as walking goes. If you take 120
steps per minute, and your stride is 2.5 feet, that is 300 feet per
minute or 18,000 feet per hour. That is about 3.5 miles per hour.

When I used to do long treadmill runs I'd listen to books on CD while I
was doing it. It made the time pass a lot faster -- more so than
listening to music. Now that I primarily run outdoors I prefer music,
as I don't feel so much need for distraction when there's stuff to look
around at. Also, it would be harder to carry a CD or tape player while
running (on the treadmill I could just park it in one of the drink
holders on the machine), whereas I have my music on an ipod on an
armband. (You can download recorded books to an ipod, though.)

This just reminded me. Our library http://rplcat.rochesterpubliclibrary...n=Hitlist.html
has a number of downloadable audio books that can be "checked out" .
