Nutritional benefits of Banana
Because of their impressive potassium content, bananas are highly
recommended by doctors for patients whose potassium is low. One large
banana, about 9 inches in length, packs 602 mg of potassium and only
carries 140 calories. That same large banana even has 2 grams of
protein and 4 grams of fiber. No wonder the banana was considered an
important food to boost the health of malnourished children! Those
reducing sodium in their diets can't go wrong with a banana with its
mere 2 mgs of sodium.

Interesting. So bananas are a goldmine of potassium. I guess the only
downside is they're slightly more sugar-rich than other fruits. Maybe
the best time to eat a banana is just before exercising.

The amazing thing about bananas to me is that they are grown in Central
America, very perishable, yet arrive all over the US and Canada in
generally excellent condition, day in and day out...and they are so
cheap. They also have the highest percentage of convertible
carbohydrates, 70%, meaning they can be converted to alcohol
efficiently, yet nobody has developed a banana wine. Perhaps they could
be used to make alcohol for fuel though. dkw

They also make a great pre and post-workout snack. I can digest them easily
without having to worry about stomach issues during a long run.

They're also good on long bike rides. Easy to carry and it's one of the few
wrappers you can toss along the roadway and not feel you're littering

Not mine today. We did a short 30 mile breakfast ride and no bananas were
required

Bananas sometimes get knocked on the various diet support forums I
hang out on because of their higher sugar content and the fact that they
tend to be more calorie dense than other fruit choices. But, I've eat
one a day pretty much every day at work for the past year and a half. I
eat one on my first break, along with a cup of skim milk. This
combination is substantial enough to get me to lunch, without being so
hungry that I dream of raiding the vending machine. I know from much
trial and error that if I didn't eat something about this calorific, I
would end up with some potato chips or cheetos or something in my mitts.
The lower calorie fruit choices would be a bad food for me, in this
context.

It really is all about finding what works for you in the long run.
Something that works great for me might be a disaster for you, and vice
versa.

I agree - banana is my afternoon snack of choice. Much better for you
than many snack foods.
