Default OT: 5 miles to half marathon

I can run 5 miles (slowly, but without stopping or dropping pace). Is
it realistic to expect to be able to up my game to run a half marathon
by, say, spring next year?

Sure you can...

How many times a week do you run 5 miles? If you run 5 miles 3X a week,
it is very possible that you can work up to 13.1.

You are 8 miles behind, just raise your distance 1.3 miles each month,
so by April you be in the 13 mile range.

When I start to get around the 8-9 mile mark, I feel like my body is
putting out, I take a power gel to give me that extra boost. I also use
a CamelBack to hydrate during the run.

Also, have different running routes, the change of scenery helps.

You can do it...

I'm not a runner but this sounds very doable. You might check out some
of the training sites available. Here's just one I found -

Good luck - you can do this!

I ran my first 5k race in June 2005, a 10k in September, a 10m in October
and my first Half on 20 November so yes it's doable. Just try to increase
the length of one run by 10% per week and see how it goes.
