Default Report from St. Louis

Hi, people. Well, I've been in St. Louis for two weeks now. And my
weight continues to creep up. This morning it was up to 87 kg! I
really don't know what I'm doing wrong.

This morning I ordered one week's worth of Nutrisystem meals. I can
still do this while sticking to my basic 1500 calorie diet plan with
bonus calories and excercise, because all the Nutrisystem stuff has
calories on it. I figured it would just give me some other samples of
good portions and add some variety to my diet. Plus it looks like it's
all conveniently single-portion stuff.

On the bright side, I finished two full years on my diet last week.

I've been in STL for 2 weeks now! I've gotten a lot done - ordered a
carport for my house and got the building permit, bought a used car
(!) and even ordered some furniture.

Does humidity have anything to do with weight loss, or were you just
talking about the weather?

Yes, my weight is definitely creeping up. 87.8 kg this morning!

What am I doing wrong? I don't think I am overeating. I think I am
doing whatever I have always done on my U.S. trips.

My weight loss plateau - and now creeping gain - can be traced
historically to two events I think.

(1) Last October my dog, Tao, passed away:

http://lerner.net/blog/tao-1992-2006-movie/

Not only did I use to walk him multiple times each day (4 or 5 walks
per day were not unusual) I never counted those walks as "exercise
calories". They were always just part of my daily routine.

Plus there was the incredible stress with dealing with the final few
months of Tao's life.

(2) Around the same time I started counting all walks - not just
special "power walks" towards exercise calories.

I guess the combination of both events is what is really causing the
problem - not enough exercise plus counting too much of the exercise I
do towards bonus calories.

Doug, I just don't count those exercise points. I just try to walk as
much as I can every day five times a week. You are just going to have
to start walking alone unless you have another dog. It is getting
really warm here, 100 degrees tomorrow, but I walk from 6:45 until 7:30.
When I have someone to walk with me I walk for an hour. I will try to
do a few evening walks too.

I think I can't sustain the diet forever without counting ANY exercise
points.

What I will try to do is count ONLY exercise points for "intentional
exercise", like exercise power walks or cycling on an exercise
machine. That would be back to what I was doing before changing the
way I counted exercise at the end of last year.

I don't know why I ever let my friend convince me that shopping was
worth 3 calories a minute.

I decided to try counting exercise points like I used to before the
end of last year. In other words, no counting "shopping walks" or
anything but "designated power walks and cycling".

I know it's just a coincidence, but I lost 2.2 lb (a full kilo!) since
yesterday's weigh-in, so I feel like I'm "back from the brink".

Well Doug I've followed your posts for a long time...In many ways our
weights were very close...Now within 1.7 lbs of goal we remain similar...I
just watched "Tao's life" and you must be one hell of a guy...I too have
dogs and love them as much as any family member...Your stress at the end
must have been devastating...My dog walking I believe has been one of my
great motivators...My loss of weight has allowed me to walk farther as well
as faster which also makes my guys happy...Don't get down over this
temporary shift...Stay the course (which you do without ever giving
in)...Good luck in your journey...GG

I miss my Gray cat terribly still. It's been a year and a few weeks.
It's been a help having the other three cats, but Gray was part of my
life for for a wonderful 14 years. I'll never forget him, but it is
true, the grief will ease and you'll think of the good times you had
with Tao.

Down another 0.3 kg this morning!

That's down 1.65 kg = 3.6 lb in 3 days!

OK. No more calorie "estimates". I'm only eating what's marked and
labeled, or that I can weigh myself, for while!

And down another .2 lb this morning. That's 3.85 lb down over the last
4 days.

By the by, does anybody know how many calories are in a Sam's Club
pretzel?

He is a beautiful smart wonderfully loving animal but when we had him for
his first vet visit DH noticed he held his head funny when walking, at first
he thought it looked like my DF's cat who is very cross eyed. When the vet
looked at him and examined him closer after watching him walk she concluded
that he has suffered a head trauma at some point. we tried to catch this
guy a few months ago and couldn't get close enough so it has happened in the
intervening time... flash forward to a few days after the vet visit... DH
says I think patch really has something wrong with him, he doesn't wake up
or start when a loud noise happens like the other cats... I called to him
and clapped my hands, nothing, DH tells me that when he goes to clean his
box or feed him patch doesn't wake unless DH touches him.

This of course means that getting him healthy taking him to a shelter is out
of the question, and I was just sick because I know we really shouldn't keep
him, but taking him to a shelter at worst means death and at the no kill, he
still probably wouldn't get adopted... he is too a loving cat to live his
life in a shelter, even a good one... but the good news is that my dear
friend's son is going to adopt patch so I am no longer sick with worry just
a little sad as I always am when I adopt a cat out. Lee

You have a good heart...I'll never understand pet abuse...Of course children
are also abused as are adults...But there is something which turns in my
stomach when it involves pets...GG

the wrenching part is that this guy isn't old enough to be a mean cat or
anything, if he does have head trauma it was either accidental from the
mother moving him or just hideous abuse, there is a special place in hell
for animal abuser, Lee

he does seem to be walking better now, and he is at least profoundly hard of
hearing, the good news is that mike is good with this, most people want to
adopt animals like children, they only want "perfect" or not at all... for
example... when I was trying to adopt Chester so stormmee could have a
playmate there was someone ahead of me, I was heart broken... then the
shelter calls, the people ahead of me thought he had ear mites so they
refused him... well, first off he didn't have ear mites, and second if that
is a reason to reject the love of such a great animal you don't deserve any
animal, ...except one that will bite your throat out, Lee
