I'm not sure what magazines you're looking at, but all of the ones I
look at that have diet advice are aimed primarily at women. Advice
for men might recommend somewhat more calories, but it depends on a
lot of factors, including body weight, activity level, and age. Really
the only good answer is to experiment to find a calorie level that
results in a reasonable rate of loss for you.
