| | | taste test any meal replacement bars lately? I always prefer "real" food, but I'm in a running club. We meet each
Saturday morning, and as the miles continue to climb, we meet earlier and
earlier, to get the run done as early as possible. I just can't eat so
early, but the runs are long enough now that I can't run the entire time
with nothing. I guess I need to start learning about energy drinks, and
other "quick" energy. But I also would like to have a bar or something that
I can carry around just in case. Most of the ones I've tasted are
god-awful. I was just wondering if anyone had a personal favorite? |

| | | Re: taste test any meal replacement bars lately? DH has been using this stuff called "Accel Gel" which is a protein powered
gel. He takes it to tennis with him, and for long bike rides. <wait, he
never does long bike rides... what am I saying here.>
Anyway, he got the idea from his biking buddies at work. The box is in the
cupboard and I haven't seen him use any. Its not high season for tennis
yet, the leagues are just starting, and we haven't gotten the high heat yet.
Last time I was in the stores I didn't see luna bars. Not sure if they are
still available or not. They were always the better tasting ones for me.
Why not make a protein shake before the run?

And then drink it before the run? I guess I could try it. I'm afraid
protein sloshing around will make me sick, but I can try it. |

Why do you need protein during exercise? Can't it wait? If you have
plenty of water available, how about a bag of jelly beans? Consumed at
the proper rate they will keep you going.
Much the same idea as a banana except they resist squashing. If worried
about electrolytes, put a small amount of salt or lite salt in your
water if you can.

I don't think protein is what you need before a run. It's harder to
digest and isn't a particularly quick energy source. I'd go with
carbs. Fruit is good -- probably something higher-calorie like a
banana. I also like the All Bran cereal bars. |

ok, forget the protein, why not just the smoothie without the protein.
