Default teething...

Emily is 1 yr old now and has 2 bottom teeth and one top tooth is just
starting to push through. We just arrived home from 3 weeks in Germany, and
I'm not sure if she is coming down with something or if she's teething. She
has a runny nose, is drooling alot, cries constantly, and won't eat much.
I'm assuming it is teething, and am trying desperately to ease her pain and
comfort her the best I can. Besides pain relievers and something cold to
chew on, is there any other trick to sotthing her? And, is there much
difference between using ibuprofen and acetamenaphin?

I was sort of wondering -- though this group does have expertise in
many areas :-).

<chuckle> It happens. My girls' pediatrician recommended
acetominaphen--and told me to dip my finger in the dose and rub it on the
area of the gums where the teeth were coming through before giving them the
rest of the dose. It seemed to work quite well. Good luck. It will be
over soon. (Seems much faster looking back on it than it did while going
through it.)

You could get some topical anesthetic at the drug store if the pain is
just from the gums. Teething pain would be accompanied by redness, and
at least a little swelling around the erupting teeth too. If this is
absent, I would suspect a virus. Either way, if she has a fever, I
would use both the ibuprofen and Tylenol alternating the two. Ibuprofen
is better at night because it lasts 6 hours whereas Tylenol lasts only
4. Teething would not cause a runny nose. dkw
