I just ate out at an Italian restaurant. Had a salmon steak with side of
rice. |

Pretty good! Just back from KFC. I got three pieces of chicken, a
small portion of fries with just a bit of Diet Pepsi. The chicken was
not good, the fries are not great and I see no use in drinking Diet
Pepsi. To how many calories do you think it adds up? |

You can look it up on their website--but that will only tell you haow much
each thing is worth--but not what percentage you ate.

Why did you eat there in the first place? Frankly, except when I was a
kid, I've never understood why people eat that stuff, it's all salt
and fat. |

I also don't get the KFC appeal. Fried chicken is just nasty. There are so
many better choices for eating out, f.e., Japanese teriyaki joints. |

Thai Noodle Houses!! Yummm....
Or the $3 Vietnamese sandwich places in my neighborhood.
Even burritos are better. |

Depends. Taco Bell has some very high calorie items like 7-layer. Better to
stick with plain bean/beef w/o cheese and sour cream. Guacamole is ok in a
small amount. |

I mean a real taqueria. If you get a bean burrito, skip the sour
cream, it's pretty good. Plus, they're so huge that I save half for
another meal. |

But I think places like Taco Hell add lard to the beans... I'd sure like to
know what and where to eat when it comes to fast food, in an "emergency"
situation. But it's hard to guess the calories and fat content of stuff
because it seems like they add fat to everything. |

Taco Time is a better bet for healthier burritos. But you still have to make
sure you get the plain bean burrito. |

Many fast food places have brochures that give the nutritional breakdown
of menu items. Also there are sometimes Government publications with the
same information, as well as company web sites.
A whopper with no cheese, no mayo, isn't too bad.

That's because it's broiler rather then fried. But can you even order a
Whopper w/o mayo? Besides, I'm pretty sure the order taker will look at you
funny. |

lol Try ordering a Whopper without the bun and see the looks you get.
The best way to not overdo on calories is to make a list of fast food places
that serve salads. Planning ahead is the best defense against overindulging.

Most of these places offer grilled chicken sandwiches, and often
salads w/ grilled chicken. The McDonald's McGrill without mayo (I
prefer mustard anyway) is 278 calories; Chick-Fil-A has one that's
similar. Chick-Fil-A's grilled chicken salad, without croutons or
dressing, is just 180 calories. (KFC, by the way, also offers roast
chicken sandwiches & salads, as well as skinless unbreaded fried
chicken breast. I used to take my mom there sometimes so checked it
out. They have excellent nutrition data on their web site.)
I also like Subway as a fast food stop. When there I usually get
their small roast beef sub without cheese or mayo -- again, I prefer
mustard anyway. It's 264 calories.

If I'm in the situation where only fast food is available I'll hunt a
McDonalds and order one of their Asian Salads with grilled chicken. Taco
Bell would be a last choice for me but you could order from their Fresco
menu. I think they advertise these items as less then 10 grams of fat per
item.
I've discovered many of the local restaurants in small towns think a salad
is iceburg lettuce with full fat dressing I'll take a McD's salad over
them anytime! |

Yes Jeri, and all others with logical choices. But, since the OP
hasn't really showed logic, as he chose KFC because "he hates it", I
don't understand the thread at all.
If you hate it, why did you eat it??? I don't eat things I hate. LOL! |

Actually, BK is one of the best places for special orders. Remember
"have it your way"? Now, mcdonalds isn't as easy, but it only takes a
little longer.
I order whopper with no mayo whenever I eat at BK, which isn't very often
anymore. It is still 500 calories although the whopper jr is only 290. http://www.bk.com/Nutrition/PDFs/brochure.pdf
That is why I don't eat there except rarely. |

No, my friend that walked into a mcdonalds in austin texas and ordered a
bun got a look. they said "we don't sell buns" so he said, ok, give me a
hamburger, no meat, no onion, no ketchup and no mustard. It was right
out of five easy pieces only they said ok, and wrapped up a bun.
He was diabetic and needed some carbs about 10 at night.
