Default training update

I feel GREAT! I've just returned home after a 14 mile training walk this
morning. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's 11 mile walk.
Actually I felt so good today I could have gone further. I've been
struggling the past few weeks to get fit with shoes that are going to work
well for my 3 day, 60 mile, walk for Breast Cancer in October. I think I
am finally close.

Last week the sneakers I had were ill-fitting and left me with a huge
blister anf a pull along the right side of my right foot. I could barely
walk Sat, Sun and Monday. I took those sneakers back and worked with the
shoe fitters to help me find a new pair that would do better. Today I'm
closer. I'll know best after my foot has really had a chance to heal and I
can really feel how these sneakers and insoles are going to work.

Today's walk, I did 14 miles in 4 hrs, 20 mins. Burned 2000 calories.
(this includes pit stops, and a stop for a draw bridge). We walk out by the
beach, so I get to enjoy the Florida Gulf coast scenary. I walk with a
training team, a group of men and woman who provide a great deal of
encouragement and comradary. We have a cadence we sing while we walk. I am
going to include this below my signature.

Good for you -- very impressive! I'm curious -- what shoes and
insoles have you found work well for you? This would be something I'd
worry about if I ever undertook anything like this (though of course I
realize everyone's fit is different).

I am currently in the Brooks Adrenalin with lynco orthotics. The
combination is meant to correct overpronation. For me, they correct the
left foot just fine, but I'm still struggling with the right. My first set
combination of shoes/orthodics were too small and over corrected my right
foot causing blisters from the arch support rubbing in the wron place and
then I ended up walking on the outside and injuring the tendons.

I walked in the new shoes yesterday and did end up changing out the insoles
on the right part way thru the walk because I was feeling the pulling in the
outter side of the foot again and my blister was swellign up again (even
though it wasn't noticably rubbing). I think I just need to have time for
the right foot to heal fully before I can truly judge if the current
shoe/orth combo works.

We have a newer store in town that is geared towards athletic shoes. You go
in, they put you on this scale looking machine that measures the pressure
points on your feet when you stand. This determins what kind of orthodics
to go into so that the weight is more evenly distributed across the foot so
you don't get sore spots.

Then they put you in a generic sneaker with no correction or special insoles
and on a tread mill and have you walk or run while the they record your
ankles. They then play back in slow motion and analyze your gate. They can
then recommend shoes for you to try and they will fit you and let you try
many different brands and styles.

Yes, this does come with a price tag... (service is free, but shoes are
pricey). My orthodics were $60 and the shoes were $100. But of course,
once you find what you like and works well with you, you can always order
more online. The store I buy from is also a local 3-day sponsor and is
giving participants 20% off of purchases, so that helps too.

I've actually had someone who runs marathons tell me that the shoe I have is
what they use for marathons.

Interesting -- I'm using Brooks Adrenalins for running, with Superfeet
insoles. But I don't do a lot of distance, so don't know how this
would hold up if I did. The store you go to sounds great! I wonder
if there's anything similar here in the DC area. There's a store that
claims to specialize in athletic shoes, but they don't do the kind of
analyses that yours does.

The store has been wonderful. The folks there are pretty knowledgable
(well, most of them). They were extremely appologetic for mis-fitting me
the first time and I actually had 3 clerks working with me to try to find
what works. I would think that if I have something like this here, in a
small city that is mainly retirement folks, then certainly DC area should
have something. The DC area is such a pedestrian city to begin with, there
is so much to encourage outdoor physical activity.

I do believe some people I've trained with have mentioned getting a gait
analsys from their podiatrist during treatment.

Just wanted to say great going!

Not been online so much lately, thanks to my glasses which were
falling apart. Got them fixed today, plus new prescription that should
help me be able to use the computer more. I hope. Bifocals coming...

EEEE and ouch! Glad you took them back. I read about your shoe store,
that sounds great! Not likely I'll see such a place in my back of
beyond town, but it's good to know that kind of technology is out
there.

They took pictures of my eyes today... I saw pictures of my eye nerve!
Weird but fun! And way better than getting my eyes dilated!
