| | | Well here I go... (long) Hi all;
Well I finally decided it is time to loose weight... I found this newsgroup
and have gotten a lot of good information already, so thanks!!! I read about
some of you that have lost 100 lbs and more and I am amazed at your
willpower and commitment.
A little about me, I am male, 46 years, 6'0", 262lbs. I used to be in the
military and in very good shape. Retired from the military, decided to stop
smoking (which was very hard, but that is a different story) (5 years since
my last cigarette) but gained a lot of weight afterwards. I went from about
190 lbs to my current 262 lbs. I now find myself having a hard time bending
over to tie my shoes. This has to change!!!
I did not want to make this a "new years resolution" so I waited until today
to start my diet and exercise routines. My goal is to get to 200 lbs, by
July 07 (my birthday) and to get in better shape. I have done some research
and figured that to meet my goal I should take in not more than 1900
calories a day. I looked at what I currently eat and realize that for the
most part I am already eating fairly healthy, but the portions are huge. So
I plan on counting calories and reduce my portions considerably. I am also
starting an exercise routine both walking (treadmill) and lifting weights
(have this equipment already (leftovers from my kids)). Because it has been
a while I am aware and plan on starting slow and working my way up.
My questions are these: Should I gradually reduce my portions or should I
just cut down immediately? Just about everything I have read suggest that
breakfast is very important. I never eat breakfast!!! Should I start? It
seems counterproductive to go on a diet and start eating breakfast when I
never did. I should mention I do not get hungry during the day, it is at
night that I am dangerous. Huge dinner and usually eat again (leftovers)
before going to sleep (I know this is not good...)

Today my first day, 1551 calories, 30 minutes in the treadmill (walking),
1.8 miles. I felt ok, while doing the exercise, will see how sore I am
tomorrow. It is almost bed time for me and I am hungry, but so far
manageable...

Do what works for you in reducing. Over the long run it doesn't matter
if you ramp down over a couple weeks or go cold turkey.
With exercise, ramping up is best.
To some degree it depends on how fast you need to see results to stay
motivated.

Yup. We are similar in size and weight history. I am bit older ... 57 ...
and weighed about 190 when I got out of the Navy 30 years ago. I gained
over the years until October 23, '06, when, at 260 lbs and short of breath
when I tried to tie my shoes, I decided to do something about it.

From what I've found out, your goal of losing 62 lbs in five months is
considered "rapid weight loss". It's doable, but you need to be careful.
I've lost about 50 lbs in 3-1/2 months through diet, cardiovascular
(treadmill and elliptical) exercise and heavy weight lifting. I've recently
slowed the weight loss down (my goal is 185 lbs) by upping my calorie intake
a bit because I could tell I was overdoing it a bit. Another suggestion ...
research what is "healthy" food. Like you, I always thought I ate healthy
.... just too much ... until I did some research. I've completely changed my
diet and eating habits as a result.

Start a log and honestly record everything you eat with it's calorie values.
You are going to be amazed. At 6' and at 262 lbs, I'll bet your intake
right now is well over 4000 calories a day.
The secret to weight loss is creating a calorie deficit. When the deficit
equals 3500 calories over a period of days, you will lose one pound. It
took me a while to fine tune my basic metabolic rate, normal activity and
exercise burn rates, but once I got the numbers right, it is very accurate.
I highly recommend reading the "Hacker's Diet" at: http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/e4/
It's a fun read, covers all the basics and the author offers free Excel
spreadsheets to log your progress.

That's because you overfueled yourself at other times. You need fuel 24
hours a day, especially if you are going to start weight training. I never
ate breakfast before (other than donuts at around 9 am). I eat something
for breakfast now everyday. Sometimes some dry cereal ... sometimes an
Eggbeater omlette ... sometimes just a bunch of fruit.

Evenings are still my danger zone. I eat dinner earlier now ... like at 4-5
pm and go to bed earlier.

Good start. It's not easy. 90 percent of the battle is making the
committment mentally.
I found that logging the data, researching calorie values, determining
healthy foods, shopping for them, preparing them has made the whole process
enjoyable. I keep a detailed log of everything, including exercise. It's
rewarding to go back a month or so in the log and realize the progress
being made.
There also will be "walls" where it appears you didn't make as much progress
as before. In fact, you might discover that over a period of a week or so
you actually gained a pound or two. It's normal and there are things you
can do to shake up the system. Losing weight and exercising is a a very
complicated process and your body will react in strange ways sometimes it
it's attempts to "save" itself. Don't be discouraged ... it means it's
working.
Here's some numbers from my log to give you an idea, since we are both of
similar size:
My average daily calorie intake for Dec and January was 1465 per day.
That's an average. Somedays I was over 2000, somedays I was under 1000.
My calculated average daily deficit (includes BMR, normal activity and
calories burned on treadmill and elliptical) was 1995 per day. This does
not include weight lifting workouts. This resulted in a rapid weight loss
that many consider to be unhealthy ... but I did it and feel fine, although
there were some days that I felt a little dizzy or weak, so I upped the
calorie intake for the day. I've recently reduced the deficit because my
calorie requirement at 210 lbs is much lower than it was at 260 lbs, plus
I've increased the cardiovasular and weight lifting exercises. Right now I
am losing at about a pound a week. When I first started I was losing about
6 lbs a week.
Good luck ... it's fun when you can look down and see your shoes again.

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a
pauper. So it's the most important meal of the day! Here is article

It's also great idea to have a daily journal. I would suggest you to
use http://www.2000cal.com/ , it's absolutely not difficult it's easy
to track your food and exercises, and it's also free.
I would also suggest you to consult a dietician about calorie
restriction. Calculations should be accurate, if not you can slow down

Consider that the people who keep it off tend to be the ones who lost
it at the rate of 4 per month not the ones who lost it faster or
slower.
There is all sorts of speculation why this is true but no certainty.
It
is probably because that level is sustainable but there are also
studies
of starvation victims that suggest that the body forces refeeds in
reaction to starvation and that level avoids triggering that
mechanism.
Anyways, take it a year at a time not shorter term.
Also consider that you can control your behavior but you can't control
the scale. No dieter in history has ever liked this fact but that
doesn't
make it not true. Base your goals on what you do - how you adhere
to your plan - not on what the scale says. It will greatly reduce any
frustration you will feel in the future.

That depends on your mental state. Do you want a complete break with
your old habits or a gradual transistion?

Because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Because you think of it as adding food agains tthe total instead of
some early food preventing hunger later in the day. Less hunger,
better control.

And that hunger is caused by not eating breakfast. Seriously.
It almost doesn't matter if the total calories for the day ends up
lower
from the prevention aspect. Preventing hunger counts for so much in
the long run - Hunger gradually saps desire to stay on plan.

Journalling is good. Among other things it focuses you on learnig
what portions are what calories.

over 325lbs...On December 21 2005 I had lost some weight on Atkins but just
did not feel right and I was not really losing anymore...I now weighed
192lbs and I was fed up and walked into my local WW meeting...I have done
every diet that has come down the pike...From the foolish to the bizzare and
all failed...This time I actually learned better eating habits and more
importantly portion control...I also never ate breakfast and took pride in
sometimes only eating dinner...I now always eat 3 meals a day...WW is no
miracle...For me something finally clicked in my thick skull...I now weigh
188 lbs and try and walk at least 10,000 steps a day...I use to treadmill 5
miles a day 5 days a week but due to some family health issues I no longer
go to the gym...It sounds like you have already made the decision...Good
luck...Eat every meal and be aware of your portions...Sounds so
simple...Good luck...GG

for the detailed post. I started reading the Hacker's Diet. Interesting.
You don't (or maybe you do) know how much your postings mean to me. I think
this newsgroup will be a great source of encouragement. As some of you
suggested I will try eating a small breakfast in the morning and see if this
make a difference on how hungry I am in the evening.
I think that reading and posting in this newsgroup during the evening (when
I would normally be eating again) will be a good thing for me to do. A lot
of times I eat late in the evening, not because I am hungry, but because I
am bored. I think the reason I do not feel hungry during the day while at
work is that I am very busy throughout the day (some times too much, but I
guess that is another subject) I am thinking of ways to stay occupied during
the evening.
To help with the portion control my wife got me a smaller plate and a scale
to measure portions. The smaller plate is (I know) a mental thing, but heck
I will try anything to make this challenge easier.
Today, I had 1370 calories and did 30 minutes on the treadmill (raised the
inclination a bit so I burned a few more calories). I am worry about
tomorrow since it is a weekend. The weather is suppose to be kind of bad so
I won't be able to do anything outside. I really have to come up with
things to do to stay busy.
Well, again I just want to thank all of you for your suggestions and best
wishes and I hope not to bore you too much with my writings.

You've identified your own problem IMO. You get bored and you've programmed
yourself to cure your boredom by having something to eat.
Same problem here for years. I have now learned to either find something
physical to do or I have a cup of green tea and go to bed. I am usually out
like a light by 9:30pm. (I watch TV with the sleep timer set to shut off
automatically).
But I also get up early ... like between 4 and 5 am. I do the exercise
routine at about 5:30am, take a shower, feed the dog (Sam Adams ... www.eisboch.com/sam ) and then have breakfast.
I am retired, so during the day if I get bored and start thinking about
extra snacks I take a ride in the truck, go to the store or go outside and
mess around with something.

I do the One Bowl thing. I bought a special, pretty bowl at the dollar
store and only eat what will fit in it. And I DON'T refill
