I missed the beginning of this thread so this point may have already been
made, but IMO, the best way to weigh is at the same time everyday, under
the same set of conditions (i.e. before breakfast or before or just after
exercise). The actual reading is not as important as the overall trend,
established by daily readings over a week or so. The "weigh-ins" should be
under the same general conditions everyday.
For those familiar with Excel spreadsheets, a simple chart with daily
readings recorded is useful. Excel (and maybe other spreadsheet programs)
allows you to also establish and display a linear trend line to the
graphical display of the recorded weight readings. Watching the tilt of the
trendline gives you a quick visual indication of how you are doing. For
example, while in maintenance mode, you want the trend line to stay
perfectly horizontal. If it slowly starts to tilt upward over time, then
you need to adjust your intake downward or increase your exercise/activity
level.
BTW, somewhere in my reading over the past few months I ran across an
article that claimed that the old rule of thumb of not eating a big meal
just before going to bed is a myth.
The article claimed that the body will burn calories doing the digestion
process just as effectively while sleeping as it does while awake. You
don't "walk off" a big meal.
