| | | Black cohosh as an effective remedy The results of a significant body of clinical evidence report Black
cohosh as an effective remedy for the common symptoms of menopause.
A study conducted by Dr. Johannes Freudenstein and colleagues,
published in the April 2002 issue of Breast Cancer Research and
Treatment, concluded that Black cohosh supplementation can safely
reduce short term menopausal symptoms. In the November
issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, in a review of 29 separate
randomized, controlled clinical trials conducted between 1966 and
2002, the authors conclude that Black cohosh may be effective for
menopausal symptoms.

Gosh, I guess you didn't read about the research that was just
published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which found that
black cohosh was just about as ineffective as a placebo in
reducing hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...121900604.html
Admittedly, the research regarding black cohosh is contradictory,
with some studies finding it mildly helpful and others finding no
evidence of helping anyone except those who sell it to fatten
their bank accounts.
And speaking of which - this is a commercial post. The link you
supplied is to a site that sells - guess what??? Black cohosh!
As stated in our FAQ, alt.support.menopause actively discourages
commercial posts. You have been reported to your ISP.

If you go to PubMed and enter "black cohosh menopause" (without the
quotation marks) you will get links to about a hundred studies. AFAICT,
half say black cohosh is no better than a placebo, the other half say it
may have some benefit.
I think it's very personal - some women are helped, others no effect,
still others find that black cohosh makes their flashes worse. I did
know one woman who found that the black cohosh helped a lot in the
beginning but later made things worse.
But all the studies I found said that black cohosh is safe, so I don't
see why anybody shouldn't give it a try.

There is a response letter to the latest study in the Annals of
Internal Med, that mentions headache as a well known side effect of
black cohosh in studies in China. The link is at the bottom of the
page below the abstract. I don't have the url handy. The study astract
is in the Dec 19 issue of the journal online.

You also need to keep in mind studies have been done, testing for
instance, St John's Wort. Several resuts have shown that the amount
of active ingredient found in the product was less than the label
stated or not at all.
Any herb, vitamin or mineral is only as good as the company that makes
it.

I suspected something when I saw "shaklee.net".
Having said that I must confess that Shaklee's power concentrated
laundry liquid is the only laundry detergent I've found that doesn't
give me hives. That's my sole connection to them. Well, and the fact
that I buy the stuff from a coworker who sells Shaklee.

Show me a company that makes a mineral or a herb.

That was below the window I had open; but now he/she is giving me lots of
