Default bleeding gums

ok, so the newest symptom of the day: bleeding & tender gums. this
is totally new to me. i take good care of my mouth, do my checkups,
etc. can this be yet another hormonal thing? do i have to worry
about infection? & i just had someone tell me it's all in my head.
did they mean my mouth?

just wondering.

My gums bled some during peri/first years of post, too. I'm going to do
another guess, re: vasomotor symtpoms. Because... often as a hot flash is
ramping up I can feel my (upper) gums throb. More blood in the gums?

LOL! prolly not. I don't think it's all in your head, though.

When you brush your teeth, try brushing all the way up onto the gum. It
helps toughen the gum. A dentist told me that, and since I've been doing
it, all the other dentists have told me they can tell I floss a lot. I
never floss.

Especially hit the crevice where the tooth meets the gum.

My dental hygienist told me that I wasn't getting the gum lines clean enough
and suggested an electric toothbrush, and the one she recommended was the
Sonicare. I've been using it for about a year and I've noticed not only are
my teeth much cleaner, I no longer have bleeding gums when I floss. It
cleans really well but at a much gentler touch than a regular toothbrush.
One daughter brushes too hard, wears out a toothbrush once/month so her
birthday gift is going to be one of these just to save wearing away her
gumline.

well, i'll do a brush up on my dental hygiene techniques. i have
noted gum tenderness correlations with other vasomotor symptoms & i've
just realized that i've had some dry mouth episodes in the last few
months that i was ignoring/attributing to meds that i was on. so the
bleeding has happened in conjunction with the dry mouth as well -
right around/after ovulation.

are there any prizes for the most perimenopausal symptoms?

thanks,
ellen

At least that would provide a silver lining! ;-)

You mean all at once, or all total?

You must not ignore the fact that bleeding gums can also be a sign of
peridontal disease, and it is more prevalent in people our age.

omg, you just scared the hell out of me. should always have coffee
1st before checking this board. haven't had panic attacks yet, but it
that doesn't elicit one, nothing will.

your're absolutely right dana, i just get stupid with my jokes &
such. lately, as i go through this reverse puberty, i suspect that
sometimes i'm acting like the kid in middle school who nobody wants to
sit next to. huge defense mechanism.

i'm pretty vigilant about dental care, in part because my parents were
not, & i've had to deal with those consequences from a young age. i'm
scheduled to see the dentist soon.

thanks,
ellen

I did forget the ;-) at the end, but that's actually rather a given
around these parts when talking about symptoms. :-)

in this case, much more effective without it.
