Heh - my Mum, who didn't use tampons, actually bought me a pack to try
so I could go swimming with my brothers - so long as you dried your
hair properly and had a "chittering-bite" after swimming and before
you went outside into the cold, you'd be fine, she said :-)

I thought it was cool that the film presented tampons
as an option, without cautions or lecturing!

Then it occurred to me that the films and booklets we got in
my school were from Kimberly Clark, the Kotex company, and
they made a vague statement (in the booklets at least)
about how tampons are not recommended "until your cycle
is established." Whatever *that* had to do with anything!

And i don't think K-C made tampons then, though they did
a few years later ("Kotems"?? Isn't that what they were
called?) But this film was by the Modess company and they
did make them!

When I started wearing them in the 60's they didn't know or should I say report any problems with them. I think it was in the late seventies or early 80's when they discovered Toxic Shock Syndrome was connected to tampons. If you remember they had just started putting warning labels on cigarettes in the 60's. Warning labels weren't a big thing back then...People trusted their Government and corps back then...Vietnam changed allot of that. We learned to question everything

That was after they came out with super-absorbent tampons made of some synthetic fiber, and women started leaving them in too long. Those tampons (I forget the name) are no longer on the market.

Kotex. They changed the composition of their tampons after the TSS
thing, and all tampon makers had to add warnings to their product.

Kotex and most of the others did change their
composition, but the big culprit was a brand called Rely.

You guys bring back a lot of memories. I grew up in Utah, where all
such matters were hush-hush and sex education's still rare. My
introduction to that baffling world came via a Modess brochure from my
mom. What a wonderful discovery tampons were! Though--did anyone
else have a Dalkon Shield? The high tides associated with those
things made tampons less than practical. I was pretty happy when I
got my hysterectomy at age 33--no more birth control or monthly
bloodbaths, even if there were unforeseen disadvantages.

LOL..My Mother was pretty up to date with womanly stuff. She told me I
probably didn't have a hymen because of all of the dancing I did...I did
acrobats, tap and ballet. She never worried to much about our girls
virginity(I think she was a "Party Girl" during the war.....she said if
our future husbands worried about it then they weren't the men for us She
was on her third marriage at the time. She was strict in other ways..like
early curfews and meeting anybody we went out with and we were not allowed
to date anybody 3 years or older then us. I think if she could she would
have put us on the pill by the time we were 16...but back then the pill was
pretty new and if an unmarried girl needed to be on the pill it had to be a
medical reason...a few years later Planned Parenthood started giving out the
pill. How old are you Eva...if you don't mind me asking

Yesterday was (gasp!) my 60th birthday, but I did not celebrate it because I
was sick in bed. I've been participating in this newsgroup for almost 10
years now and am reluctant to "retire" from it even though I'm reallly too
old--5 years past menopause. How old are you?

Happy (slightly belated) Birthday!

I'm a couple of years younger than you, but 12 years post-meno. But hormone
levels still bounce around on me now & again (grrrrr), I still get the
occasional bout of hot flashes, & I've found that once-in-a-while I can
still answer someone's question(s) - they're relevant to what I
experienced - or am still experiencing. So, I say to you: "Don't retire,
stick around". Besides, you're... well, a member of the group, IMO, &
therefore should stay. Even if only for social reasons. :-)

Happy Birthday! I hope you're feeling better today. So far I've
survived turning 60 for five weeks.

I've been participating on this group for about 8 years, just
after surgipause, and I'm also reluctant to retire. I enjoy the
company too.

There's an age limit here??? WTF. I've been posting off and on since
'96, as I remember, and don't plan on leaving. I don't like the idea
that this is another thing that I am considered TOO OLD for!! Shit.
As long as I can drag my old decrepid ass up to this computer I will
be posting to this newsgroup and checking on what is being said
here....

Happy Belated Birthday Eva!!......My Husband turned 60 in October. I'm 57
have been in Menopause 6 years.....but this last year started
spotting...been to three Gyn's...they don't seem to worried...I did have a
Uterine Biopsy that showed small changes but nothing serious...I now bleed
daily..not heavy just watery when I wipe...usually just in the
afternoons...I do have fibroids, that never gave me trouble until my last
year in peri....then only heavy bleeding once and a while. It's time for
another Pap...with this bleeding not sure if they will get a clean one. The
last GYN I saw was at a teaching hospital and his Resident suggested another
uterine biopsy and I said only if they knock me out I don't care how old I
get I am staying with this group...I learn allot here

hhhmm, had always noted a general correlation between big hair &
confidence, but hadn't thought about big wigs & strength. funny that
you mention tina & cher, since i had come across this bizarre video
yesterday featuring the two of them & kate smith doing a medley of
beatles' tunes. not worth watching all the way through, but a peek
indicates the sheer strangeness of it.

Well, I watched it all. Kate Smith being there was weird and she was

look like they're having a blast together. Bizarre, yes, but fun! :-)

I'm 65 and luckily no sign of menopause yet.

Lucky genes (of the male variety :-)

More seriously, the effects of menopause can continue to be bothersome
for a long time.

:-)

And a reminder of what a great looking chick Cher was before she got
herself plasticised by the surgeons :-)
