Default D&C Questions

Ack.

Had to change gynos due to insurance changes, plus the "old" one was
only in her office 1.5 days per week, hard to get appts.

So, went to new gyno this AM. Had ultrasound, he found one small
fibroid in uterus, an area of thickening in the lining of the uterous
and a cyst on right ovary. Did a blood test to check out cyst (CA125)
and has scheduled a hysterosonogram (another one) and D&C. Both to be
done next Tues. at 9 AM.

I had a D&C about 30 years ago after a miscarriage...no GA, just some
shots right into the cervix (that was bad enough!) but all-in-all, not
a bad experience. So...I didn't think to ask, and docs office didn't
say...does one get General Anesthesia these days?

They did ask me if I'd had a recent chest x-ray and/or ekg.

Sounds ominous.

I had General when i had a D&C in 1988(?) or so. From your
description of cervical shots, i think i'm glad! I don't like anesthesia,
feel ghastly afterward, but UGH with needles in the cervix! I'd
rather have the GA

I dunno about the chest xray and ekg questions. Precautionary,
in anticipation of GA, to predict whether you'll react to it...?

-- others here may have a better idea of why they ask that.

I think that is a new pre-surgical requirement. I had to have them before
my ablation in late 2005, and YD had to have them before her foot surgery
last spring.

Thanks to you both! I went ahead and called the surgical center
(Fountain Valley Regional Hospital...anybody been there?) and they
said, yes, GA is required.

I guess that's best. I tend to get nervous about these things (age has
done that to me unfortunately) and am hoping I don't spaz out! Anyone
else do that? IE, get shakey, worried, hot, then cold and muscles want
to cramp up? I have had lower back spasms before, and sure enough...as
soon as I start thinking about doctors and hospitals, the ole' back
starts to give me fits.

Well, you are in for a big surprise. I had my first D&C in the 70's
and my last one year before last. What a difference. My first one I
had GA and it wasn't bad, but removing the packing was bad. It was
like ripping a bandaid off for about 2 whole minutes. I was
hemorrhaging after a miscarriage and the D&C was to stop the bleeding.

My last one was really different. THe hospital personnel have been to
social skills school or something. They made me feel like I was the
only patient and the best one at the hospital. In the OR it was cold
and they covered me with warm blankets. They were very attentive and
SO FRIENDLY. They gave me a sedative....I went to sleep and the next
think I know they were calling my name and it was over.

I think you will find that this time you will be much more comfortable
and your fears will melt away as soon as you get there. Mine did. I
will add that I was at a VERY LARGE trauma center/university/teaching
hospital/etc. But that shouldn't make a difference.

Good luck to you. And I would be interested in how it goes. Report
back when its all over, ok?

You have no idea what we have discussed here! And I will be waiting
for your story. I just know it won't be as bad as you expect. After my
trip was over I wanted to go back for the sedative and warm
blankets...sick, eh? LOL.

Aren't they!!! Back in '97 I had an angiogram done and right at the
beginning of the procedure they gave me a shot of valium....that was
the best...the best...feeling I have had ever! So, the warm blankets
and the shot of valium are my fondest memories of hospital visits. As
for the rest of it....I try to forget.

Actually, I think they mean the blankies were warm when they were put on.
Do I have that right, guys?

Yep, knew that. Now I want a cup of cocoa to go with the warm blankie
and dogs.

Yep. They come out of a warming cabinet -- a wonderful invention,
that warming cabinet. Wish I had one at home!

Cuddling with doggies is the best medicine, IMO!

Hope all goes well!

Dogs and warm blankets. How perfect is that? Too bad dogs aren't
allowed in the OR.

Same here. That warmed blanket after surgery is the best.

I would love that. My two little guys bring so much joy, love and
entertainment to my life! It would definitely be comforting to see
their little faces beaming up at me when I woke up.

Remember those old "Love is..." cartoons? A warm puppy for sure!

I always got a warming blanket after my kids were born, for some reason my
BP would drop real low and I would feel like I was freezing. They had one on
me after my last surgery..but I was in so much pain I didn't care if I was
hot or cold

All done.

Was a little nervous the night b-4 and morning of, but no need to be as
once they hooked me up to the IV I was oblivious. Waking up was a
breeze, felt like the best nap I ever had!
No side effects from GA at all. Yeehaw...let's do it again!! ;-)

Got warming blankets and kind words & something for the cramps. Stayed
home from work 2 days, back today. Bleeding still...more than
spotting, less than "normal" (what is normal after 50?!?) period. And
a little...hmmmm, not really a cramp, more like a dull poking feeling
once in a while in lower ab area. Doc knows all this. Have appt. in
1.5 weeks for recheck.

Uterine tissue will be biopsied (sp?) and will have results at recheck.
Am sure all will be good.

Thanks for the very kind words ladies, you not only helped set my mind
at ease, but gave me a giggle too. Oh...and coming home to my doggies
was the best!!!!

Now, can you fix my husband? ;-)

The only way I could fix mine was to get rid of him.

So glad your D&C went well. I just knew it would. And I'm sure your

Laughing here!!!! He's been neutered, but maybe some 'doggie downers'
would help.

If only it were that easy :-(

Toying w/the idea that life w/this man may not be how I want to spend
the rest of my days. (Does that sound indecisive or what?)

(Probably a discussion for a different usenet group huh?)
