Default More news

For those readers who have been following my saga, I have a little news.
Someone here suggested it might be good for me to get away from home for a
while and do something for myself. A friend of my dad's rented a 2-bedroom
condo on the ocean just north of Palm Beach, Fla. for the winter. She 's
staying there alone but has been hosting a continuous round of guests. She's
been trying to convince my father to visit, but he's too frail now to
travel. I was talking to him about it and told him I'd go if someone invited
me to a free place to stay right on the beach with sunshine and perfect
temps and a view of the ocean from the terrace, w/ dozens of restaurants all
around, serving the freshest seafood imaginable. So he said why don't I go
then? I told him I would if I was invited. So he called his friend and asked
her and she said, great, c'mon out!

The sad news is, I talked to DH and he says it's too busy at work now for
him to get away, but he thinks I should go if I want to and he's willing to
do whatever it takes to hold down the fort here so I can go. My birthday is
in less than a month, so he said I should go for my BD and that will be his
gift to me. I have a girlfriend who'd love to go too and we talked it over
and she says she can take a few days off work to go. I talked to my sister
and a caregiver about helping out w/ the DFM, so I've got that covered now.
The friend's condo has 2 beds in the guest bedroom and a private bath, so
there's plenty of room for the 2 of us.

At first, I was only thinking of going for a long weekend. But the airfares
come down significantly (like $100 or more) if you fly out on a Th and back
on a Tu. So I talked to my friend and we decided we'd stay for 4 days, w/
travel days Th and Tu. We got fares at $152/person r/t and I also got a good
deal on a rental car from the airport. I booked the tickets already and the
car and we leave 2-8, PM. We fly back 2-13, AM.

Doesn't solve any of my problems with DH and things, but it's a nice
distraction and it stays out of the danger zone.

What d'yall think?

Kimmy

Sounds like a sweet deal to me. As it happens, I'm going to Florida that
same week. Flying on JetBlue for the first time. Judging by the fare I
guess you are too?

Go and have a blast, sun & surf, enjoy!

I flew Jet Blue for the first time Buffalo to NYC and it was great.
Unbelievable airfares, Buffalo to NYC on a Tuesday was $39.00 and return on
a Sunday was $79.00. I live in the greater Toronto area and many Canadians
fly out of Buffalo cause the airfares are so much cheaper. An hour drive
from my house to the airport, $40.00/wk for the airport parking and I've
saved myself half the cost of a Canadian airfare.

Actually, no. I looked into JetBlue, but they didn't have any direct flights
from my airport to PBI, and adding a connecting flight hikes the fare up. In
fact, I'm flying out on Ted and back on American.

What part of Fla. will you be in, Eva? I know it's a big state.

I'm going to St. Augustine, airport is Jacksonville. Never been there
before. Have been to West Palm, though. Very nice airport, but I had a
*terrible* experience with Budget Rent-A-Car there, had to wait 2 hours to
get a suitable car (I reserved a compact, all they had left were SUV's).
Needless to say I'll never rent from them again.

Oh, that's too bad. I'm renting from Dollar...sure hope I don't have any
problems, because my flight gets in late and I know I don't want to be
sitting in some dreary rent-a-car office at that hour, completely exhausted,
waiting for a car and then having to find my way on strange roads to my
host's home. I guess we've all had our rent-a-car horror stories though,
just like airport baggage nightmares.

Spoke to my host yesterday and she let me know something I hadn't thought
of...she doesn't have a car down there--it was too expensive to ship hers,
she didn't want to drive it down there, and she doesn't want to spend the
money to lease one for her winter stay. Instead, she's been relying some on
her daughter (who's also renting about a mile away), some on neighbors and
the rest on all these guests that have been coming out to stay and renting
cars for their stay. She asked me how big a car I got and when I said
"economy" I could tell something was wrong. LOL! When I understood what was
bothering her, I instantly promised to upgrade to a mid-size, which I saw
from the website could be done for only $17 extra. What's $17 in the scheme
of things?

She intimated that she's wanting to go out with us and hang w/ us, which
surprised me and put me off just a bit. She's a nice lady, and she's sort of
fun, but I don't know her that well and I really hadn't counted on hanging
out w/ her most of the time. Oh well. Maybe I'll give her the keys and tell
her to help herself while I mostly hang on the beach. That sounds plenty
good to me.

I do hope you have a great time on your trip, too, Eva. It will be fun when
I get back posting again and we can compare notes. I'm hoping the ocean air
will clear some of the cobwebs of confusion out of my brain.

If you do, be sure the rental's insurance covers her, too. Tres

Didn't even think about that but you're so right Chak. From what I recall
when one rents a car only the registered driver is insured unless you pay
extra to add someone else, specifically by adding her name when you pick up
the car. You don't know her as a driver and from what it sounds she doesn't
do any driving down there so there's a risk that she could get into an
accident. Not worth the hassle afterwards.

Sometimes it's just easier to stay in a hotel.

Not in this case. I wouldn't go if not for the free place to stay.

I don't really care about the car rental.

Focus on the big picture, where you're going and why. We all have a
nightmare travels story but the main thing is not to let one wrong
thing ruin a vacation. I just went on my dream vacation (returned a
couple of weeks ago). We left the night of a terrible storm and the
power went out as soon as we got on the plane. They couldn't get the
plane door closed nor the ramp away from the door for over and hour.
And the flight was delayed an additional 90 minutes. Seriously; all I
did was focus on where we were going and that this would all be behind
us once we got there. I did not stress one bit about it. AND TRUST
ME, I'M A MAJOR STRESSOR IN ALMOST ALL ASPECTS OF MY LIFE! Okay, so
xanax helped a bit, but I took that due to being nervous to fly :-)

NOTHING! If you need a winter break, time away and want to have fun,
you're right....17 a day is piss in a bucket.

Just check on the insurance coverage, so nothing comes back to bite
you.

I returned from a two week vacation feeling like a million bucks.
Unfortunately, a week later, my 28 year old son was dx'd with bladder
cancer, and it's almost as if I didn't go away. Fortunately I have the
pictures and the seashells to prove that I really was there :-(

Just go, have a ball and smell the seashore. Both my son and I have
been dx'd with cancer in 11 months. While we were away, we bought a 10
week timeshare (life time, not 10 weeks in a year!!!). I'm not sure
when we'll be able to afford the flight and food part, but you can bet
your bottom dollar that I'll make it happen somehow or other. I bought
it partly to have the will to fight this dx during those times that I
feel so icky.

Take lots of pictures and if you love shells; do some research before
you go if there are any beaches that have great shelling. My mom lives
down in West Palm (an icky part, not the nice rich part :-) I've found
some nice shells at a beach near her- for the life of me I can't think
of the name of the beach it has been so long since I've been there.
Maybe it's Boynton Beach. I have a sucky memory.

Have a blast. And...I saw you posted in ASM...I've been posting there
for about 10 years. My name there is LaMer :-)

Good for you! Interestingly, I'm going w/ a nervous flyer, too, and I'm also
bringing xanax for her. She's willing to do it though because the ultimate
scenario is enough appealing to her that she's ready to face her fears.

No, no, no....not $17/day! $17 to the total price. The week's rate for an
economy was like $161. For the mid-size, it's $178. So even better!

Oh yeah...I mentioned this to DH and he reminded me our own policy covers
rentals, and it's the same coverage. Under our plan, licensed, adult drivers
w/ our consent to drive are covered too. So no problem. It's all working out
like a breeze. A warm, ocean breeze. ; )

Oooohhhh, gosh. What a bummer. I'm so, so sorry. <<<<<hug>>>>>>>

Yeah, you need it, definitely. I'm so sorry...you have been through the
wringer. But you have a great attitude...I love it. So important.

Thanks for the advice! Check to the pictures, but I doubt I'd have thought
of the shelling had you not mentioned it, so thanks a lot!

Me too. A product of age, I'm assuming. As long as I have something to
blame it on, LOL!

Oh yeah....I guess you found out I can have quite a potty mouth, and be
nasty as hell. It's not my nature to be rude to people and flame on usenet.
But I don't take to getting pushed around or dumped on, and I am very
capable of giving as good as I get...if not more so!

You probably also notice there's been a few developments in my situation,
too. <sigh> It sucks, but I'm hanging in there.

People like you remind me how trivial my petty little concerns are in the
grand scheme...so thanks for keeping me grounded, and thanks for your good
wishes re my upcoming vacation in the sun.

If you are fully covered on your own car aren't you covered for any car you
drive? I know with our Insurance we don't have to get extra insurance when

A policy generally covers the car, not the driver. If I lend my car to
someone and he wrecks it, my insurance will still pay.

It may be an 'extra' on your policy that they do that.

I would be covered on someone elses car if they have third party coverage,
something that's usually on a policy. It's been a long time since we rented a
vehicle but when my friend & I rented in Portugal only the registered driver
was covered. On holiday, a friend wanted my husband to drive his rented car
and he had to call the company to put my hubby on his coverage.

My insurance, as standard, covers me to drive any car that I
have the owner's permission to drive, for example, my
husband's car, but only "third party, fire and theft", not
"fully comp".

Since this seems to be the travel thread, thought I'd relate my own
Menopausal Woman's Dream Trip. I just made the annual visit to my
uncle in Berkeley (from my home in the Sierra Nevadas). We took bikes
on the commuter train under the bay to San Francisco, where we rode
around the bay shore to Fishermen's Wharf. The temperature was near
freezing when we left, and got up to about 40 midafternoon. A divinely
sharp wind was blowing.
We continued along the shore to Golden Gate Bridge and then rode
across. Thence down to Sausalito on the other side, and took an
open-air ferry back to Fishermen's Wharf. From there we rode back to
the train station at the Bay Bridge and to Berkeley.
Wearing levis, sweater and gloves, I was gloriously cool! The wind was
especially refreshing. My uncle lives in a 100 year old house with
terrible heating, so there was the added bonus of sleeping in a 45
degree room! I had not one hot flash the whole trip.
Boy, what I wouldn't give for a trip to the south pole in July.
Cool regards,
Les

Good for you! This sounds like a delightful trip and I know the scenery was
top. We were in SF for a few days in early July and it was a thrill. We had
such a good time and the weather was nice and cool, just as you say. It's a
wonderful metro area, and so scenic.

Where did you get such good rates? What a nice idea.

Thanks Amy. I booked via expedia.com Fares are lower if one travels on Tu,
W or Th...considerably lower. Enough to make it worth our while to add a few
extra days to our original plan of when to depart and return. On the
inconvenient side, we will arrive late in the evening (after 10pm) which
will be a real pain if our flight is delayed, and must do one of those
returns at the brink of day kind of thing. Still, I'm willing to suffer a
little inconvenience for non-stop flights at big reductions in fare.

We're flying out on Ted and returning on AA. Someone I told said you can't
return on a different airline than the one you use to fly out. I said, oh
yeah? Tell that to expedia. I swear...

Then our host, who I can't complain about, hears our travel arrangements and
starts telling me to call this airline and that, and this car rental agency
and that, to see if I can get a better deal. She was listing places. I was
majorly annoyed but remained sugary sweet. I explained I booked both through
expedia, using lowest rates as primary sorting criteria. She's in her 70s
and doesn't get the computer thing...it makes it so that people don't have
to do all that sh** anymore. But she's putting us up for free and is being
very gracious about it. So I hold my tongue.

Someone else asked me if I was all packed yet. Every single trip I've ever
taken, it never fails. There's always someone who will ask that question
even though it may be two weeks before my departure date. <sigh> Most
likely, people aren't really listening or paying attention and are just
making small talk.

I am *so* looking forward to getting away. I don't know why, but life has
felt so stressful lately. I just want to escape. I can't wait to hear the
sound of the surf rushing onto shore and feel those golden rays warming my
skin. Two weeks and a day and I'm there. The weekend after I'm back, my son
has his Sweet 16 party. It's a bowling-pizza party w/ a disco. It's what
I've put my time into mainly the last two days.

On other news, DH started PT and is feeling better. He's been on continuous
doses of Rx ibuprofen since he saw the doctor, and began icing his shoulder
a few times a day as per direction of PT. He said the therapy work is
painful, but not as bad as the pain he was having before just w/ moving his
arm the wrong way.

He did find out what's been going on w/ me. I'm sorry to say he found some
of the posts I wrote. I thought I had deleted them properly, but apparently
I screwed up and some were still on a sent mail file. Ordinarily, he doesn't
snoop and respects my privacy (as I do his), but this time he was worried
enough that he peeked. He saw that I've been moody and mopey. I felt bad he
found out that way and that he got his feelings hurt, but maybe it's better
things are out in the open. He wasn't happy about me broadcasting our most
personal problems via the internet, or talking to strangers about us before
talking to him. But otherwise he was pretty cool about the rest of it.

He's trying really hard now to compensate. He's cutting back on his hours at
work and trying to be more attentive at home and romantic. It's sweet, but
also kind of sad. His biggest worry was that I might be thinking of leaving
him, which I wasn't. Once he was assured of that, and that I really do still
love him and am not in love w/ someone else, I could see how greatly
relieved he was (which made me both happy and sad). I didn't want for him to
feel so threatened. But he said he doesn't want me to give up any friends,
and he told me he trusts me completely. He said he knows I would never do
anything to disrespect the marriage and our vows, no matter what temptations
might come my way. So that was nice.

In the meantime, I've been doing some reading. Some articles I found online
say that researchers do believe that hormonal changes in menopause may
account for a decrease in sexual pleasure/enjoyment. I also read that they
can cause mood swings as well that can range from loss in libido to a sudden
upsurges in desire, which may not match the appetite of the partner. One
article recommended counseling and suggested temporary HRT might be
beneficial. I know about that, and am not interested in HRT, even on a
short-term basis. Still, I'll keep it on a back burner in case things don't
improve, or get worse.
