Default OLPC available now - give one, get one

For anyone who's interested in the One Laptop Per Child initiative,
they're on sale now. If you buy one for a child in a developing nation,
you can have one, too.

http://www.laptopgiving.org/en/index.php

I think the most interesting (actually, mind-blowing) thing about this is
that

(quote)
Since many children in the developing world live “off the grid’’ (in
places with poor or non-existent power infrastructure), the XO laptop is
designed to be extremely power efficient. The batteries operate for up to
2,000 recharge cycles (four times the lifetime of a typical laptop
battery). They are extremely efficient, contain no toxic heavy metals,
and can be hand charged via a crank, pedal or pull-cord—or recharged by a
directly connected solar panel.
(end of quote)

So kids who don't even have electricity can connect to the internet and
to the world. How cool is that?

It's made to be durable (rugged, in fact) and to last.

Anyway, I present the information for those who are interested. :-)

Chak

I'm actually considering getting myself one. I love the idea of a laptop
you can recharge in pretty much the same way you'd blow up a mattress.
:-) What with global warming and increasing electricity prices, this
laptop would be good for us folks in developed nations, too.
