OK, let's use this "disease" to sell more pills, figure out how
to diagnose more women with it, strong-arm some densitometry
companies into building office devices of dubious value, get
testing and medication for the "disease" covered by Medicare,
sell lots of pills to women who don't need them... and watch the
$$$ roll in.
It's all so cynical.
Thanks for posting this. It should be required reading for
everyone, not just middle-aged women.

Fascinating article - my doctor tried to get me to take Fosamax too
for the same "disease".
Glad I used my common sense and stopped taking it.

You're welcome. Yeah, to market it for its original intended use is one
thing, but to take the category intended as a simple useful slot for
scientists, & use that to manufacture a disease - & all of the
accompaniments - in order for more $$$ to roll in, is another.
On another note... Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to everybody. :-)

Thanks for posting this Cathy, it's a good find.
But you know what? I only got about halfway through the article and had
to stop reading it, it makes me so disgusted.

The psychology about medicine has got to change. These researchers
started out with genuine concern trying to address a real disease, but
they didn't have enough information, so they opted for an arbitrary
break off point. And then the money guys got involved....
I understand wanting to prevent disease, but we're taking it to such
extremes that people are being harmed, both physically and psychology.
Think how much happier the runner in the article would be if she didn't
have to think of herself as vulnerable. What crap!
As for fosamax, my mom was prescribed fosamax for her
osteopenia...ahem...and a year or two after she began taking it, she
started having jaw pain that seemed to be associated with a particular
tooth. Of course at first the tooth was suspect, but it showed no
problems. The dentist wondered if perhaps the sinus above the tooth was
the problem. About the same time, the news began reporting a few women
having bone necrosis in their jaws associated with taking fosamax while
getting some type of chemo and having a tooth extraction. My mom was
not on chemo and luckily wasn't having that tooth extracted. She quit
taking the fosamax anyway. Her jaw pain went away too. Coincidence?
Who knows?

Hope everyone had a happy, merry, or just peaceful avoidance type of week!
I just got off duty for Xmas stuff and now am busily shopping for
seating for my DD who has invited folks over for NYE with only a single
futon for seating. Good thing folks her age can still get up and off of
floor pillows, butterfly chairs or cheap Ikea arm chairs.

When I was in college, my home-made seating consisted of two huge
overstuffed pillows with tie-dyed covers, and two outdoor chaise
lounge pads (on sale at K-Mart for $5 each). I'd take my body
and furniture at that time over what I currently have... (but not
my experience). :-)

Ah, yes - floor pillows! Do we all have them at one (young!) point? ;-)
I'd like to be able to get up from a floor pillow - or anything else which
is low down, for that matter - these days in one reasonably fluid motion &
without saying, "ooch... ouch..."

I had chairs made of giant floor pillows with an L shaped metal frame so
they actually had backs. Even young, I was a Comfort Queen. :-)
I got very nice, box edged cushions for very little money at Crate and
Barrel today (NUTTY crowds!) They go with her black futon and they're
well made and comfortable, even have handles. A stack of those and a
butterfly or bowl chair and she's good to go. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family...1&SearchPage=1
These are very well made and densely cushioned for the price. They had
some zippered small pillow cover to match; will check with K to see if
she wants those to toss onto the futon. Got the charcoal grey with
colored stripes.

They're nice - they should work well, & I would've chosen the same ones.
And the handles are a good idea.
My only complaint would be the same as what I've been noticing more & more
for throw pillows: that they need to be dry cleaned. If it says "Spot
clean" or "Dry Clean", I think: they're nuts! Esp. with kids or pets, I
want to be able to unzip the cover & toss it in the wash! I did buy throw
pillows at Pier 1 a while ago which say "Dry Clean" on their care tags, but
at least the covers do zip off. And I loved both the color & the fabric,
and they were one sale, so... ;-) |

I know, I know. But better dry cleanable than not cleanable at all, I say.
We bought a real chair at Ikea, too, for almost no money. Can get a
slipcover ready made for $30, so it won't look disgusting forever if it
gets dirty. :-)
