Default OT- another animal (cat this time) tale - incl. a tiny bit of rock & roll reference (re: the other thread)

There had/have been 2 strays cats hanging around my immediate neighborhood
for months. Then I hadn't seen one of them for a couple of weeks - a very
pretty & extremely friendly L-H caramel colored girl. She'd been declawed,
& was out at all hours, so figured she was homeless. In fact, she appeared
to be sheltering under one of my LR window well covers at least some of the
time. Rather wanted to adopt her, but there's Demelza... who still isn't
totally over the fact that Herrie lives here... a mere 8 years later... !

In the meantime, I put a break-away collar on the other stray - a B&W tuxedo
kitty who was no longer the "little" B&W kitty (as my next-door neighbor & I
used to refer to him) - getting to be a big bruiser of a guy - wasn't yet
neutered. Used a laundry marker to write "If you own this cat - call
"xxx-xxxx" on the collar. Got a call from a neighbor around the corner.
Turned out they'd been feeding him for months, too, & were thrilled to see a
collar on him - thinking he had an owner after all - until they read the
msg! But they called to say they'd been worried about him, too, & had let
him into the house sometimes, esp. on nights when it was freezing rain, etc.
They said he occasionally goes in, takes a nap, then strolls out again. And
said he lets them pick him up. I asked if they'd by any chance seen the
caramel colored long-haired cat around, too - yep; the reason I hadn't seen
her lately is that they took her in her 2 weeks prior, & named her Tabitha.
:-)

While I had Demelza at the vet for her fibrosarcoma tumor - before I'd put
the collar on Mr. B&W Stray & heard back form the neighbors, I was telling
my vet about these two stray cats - she said she'd gladly neuter Mr. B&W if
I could catch him, even if on a weekend when the office is closed. (Since
Ms. Caramel was declawed, we both figured she was prob. already also
spayed - which it turns out, she was, acc. to the neighbors who adopted
her.) And that since he wasn't even really my cat - that he was going to be
a TNR, that she'd give me some breaks on the bill where she could. We were
originally thinking just the basic basics: get him neutered & give him a
rabies shot. But...

A couple of Sundays ago, there was Mr. B&W on my porch again, staring in
through the storm door... So I put some food out to keep him occupied for a
bit, called my vet (at home), & despite it not being her on-call weekend,
she agreed to meet me at the office in an hour if I could get him into a
carrier. Piece of cake - popped him into a carrier w/ no problem. The
neighbor was right - no problem picking him up. The vet did a quick physical
& checked him in that Sunday afternoon, then neutered, tested him for the
feline nasties (negative :-} ), dosed him w/Advantage, & gave him 3 vax on
Monday. Then wormed him the next day. The works. The neighbors insisted on
chipping in - very generously - toward his vet bill. I need to bring him in
again on the 21st for his vax boosters.

He's basically a TNR, but at least will stand of better chance of staying
healthy (although I wish he would not cross the main street in front of my
house - which I have seen him do!), & won't get some poor stray female
pregnant. And now that I know he tested neg. for FIV & Feline Leuk., I know
that I can invite him in when he shows up here & when the weather's awful
out. A couple of weeks ago when it was very cold (down near 0º F) the
neighbors kept him in one night, & when he showed up here after 10:00 the
next night, I kept him in until I went to work the next morning. Went
pretty smoothly - he slept on the sofa. :-)

Mr. B&W has always looked well-fed - part of the reason I waited forever to
get him fixed; thought his maybe owners were just new at having a cat, &
didn't realize the sooner the better, re: neutering. But since I now know
he's been getting fed regularly at the house around the corner since last
May, plus what I put out for Simba - a cat from 2 blocks over who has never
looked particularly well-cared for despite known owners - (& whoever else
wants a snack)... explains his solid-ness!

This guy could use a name - I was thinking of (The) Wanderer, the Dion
DeMucci song - but it doesn't roll off the tongue very well... Plus his
nickname would be Wandy - sounds like a girl! -Not- appropriate for this
guy. My vet took one look at him when I brought him in that Sunday & said,
"Without even feeling under his tail, I can tell he is *definitely* a boy -
those jowls!" The neighbors call him Butchie because he looks so very
masculine, but I associate "Butchie" with a dog we had when I was very
little who had that name, not with a cat... He looks like a Francis to
me... odd, considering I don't even particularly like the name. But, hey,
what do you know... I Googled "Dion DeMucci", & his middle name is Francis!
Huh. ;-) My pet sitter suggested "Frankie".

I'm waiting to see how this all pans out... Mr. B&W/Francis/Butchie/Frankie
comes in, but then he wants out again. The first few times he stayed 5 - 35
minutes, & that was enough. But he's stayed in the house for ~2- 3 hours on
other days - incl. taking naps. Sometimes alone, sometimes on my lap. The
neighbors who also watch out for him told me that he's been doing that at
their house for months. I just wish he'd ask to come in at night, instead
of during the day; have no idea where he spends the nights. Demelza doesn't
like him, but OTOH, it's not nearly as bad as when I took in Herrie. Except
she often mistakes Herrie (who's also a B&W tuxedo) for Mr. B&W &
vice-versa... So she sometimes lets B&W walk right by her w/nary a hiss, &
other times snarls at Herrie, who's actually innocent (for once). It's
messing with poor Demelza's mind a bit...

You might have subconsciously remembered that Priscilla here has a tuxedo
cat named Francis--maybe that's why the name occurred to you?

As for Dion DiMucci and "Frankie"....that fits too, because he made an album
in the late 80s (I think) called "Yo Frankie." It contained a minor hit
song, "And The Night Stood Still," which I was very fond of.

I have no luck at all with YouTube. I ought to hire ellen as my personal
YouTube scout!

I bet they have a memorial for you in Kitty Kingdom..wherever that is... I
used to be the "Cat Lady" at one of the bases we were stationed at. I worked
at a Marina Shoppette(like a quick Stop Store on base) I couldn't tell you
how many Marina kittens and Mama Kitties I took to our orphan kennels to
get spayed and neutered. There was the main queen that ruled the area and
had the majority of litters...the problem...the was a favorite of the
fishermen...it took me three weeks to talk them into letting me take her in
to have her kittens and have her spayed and get her shots...they told me I
wouldn't bring her back..I had to promise my youngest born to them if I
didn't bring her back..LOL. The finally said ok...they even gave me the
money to have her fixed and get her shots. I brought her back 10 weeks
later.....Gotta love those Macho fishermen
I love those old male cats with the jowls..we used to have one at the
kennels that would hug you when you carried him and rub his jowls against
our cheeks...and drooled...he found a great home too I miss not having
cats anymore, but the two Weimaraners I have are not cat friendly...well
they are... but too friendly they would probably play the cat to death. I
had a friend that had a tuxedo cat and they named him "Tux"

What an excellent memory! Yes, my Francis (aka Baby Baby) is 3 1/2 now
but still my tuxie baby. ;-)

Nope - I'd forgotten all about his name (sorry, Priscilla!). It originally
came to mind from Ross's cousin Francis, in the Poldark saga (books by
Winston Graham, BBC dramatization was on PBS originally as a "Masterpiece
Theater" series, then re-broadcast in its own right a few years later).
Which is where Demelza's name is from.

If I think of it later, I'll try to find it; if I have any luck, I'll post

great story - great job, cathy. can't help with the name at all, but
it's very funny that demelza is sometimes mixing francis/butchie/
frankie up with herrie. has to be confusing for all 3 of them.

Got interested & searched, & eventually found it. I couldn't find it on
either You Tube or iTunes, but did find it on Amazon via a "Dion DiMucci"
search. Yes, found the "Yo, Frankie" album & there's a clip of "And the
Night Stood Still". :-) I'd post the link, except it brings up my own
Amazon page/info... IOW, I think perhaps someone (an unscrupulous person -
not any of *you*!) could possibly order stuff on my acct. via "1-click" if I
posted the link.

ah, eva, it wouldn't work. you have good taste, thus most of the
stuff you'd be looking for wouldn't be available on youtube, (though
there are a few gems here & there). i tried looking up many of the
artists/songs from your feeling good music list & wasn't successful :-

great story - great job, cathy.

**Thanks - but as much credit goes to the neighbors who're also looking out
for him & to my vet.

can't help with the name at all, but
it's very funny that demelza is sometimes mixing francis/butchie/
frankie up with herrie. has to be confusing for all 3 of them.

**Actually, I think Demelza's the only one who's confused. ;-) She's a L-H
calico & on the smallish side, whereas the other 2 are large B&W tux guys.

Hey, I think "Tuxie Baby" or "Frankie Baby" could also work for this B&W
cat. He's that kind of guy. ;-)

Okay, I had googled Dion DiMucci the other night (5 days ago now) & watched
a few videos while doing so. And "Ruby Baby" is *still* playing in my head
as an earworm. At least it's one I like!

And, after finding & listening to the clip of "And the Night Stood Still" on
Amazon, I listened to it again. By the 2nd listening it was ringing a faint
bell. So I listened again - bell was still faint, but more "there".
Something tells me I've heard it before - don't know if it was Dion's
version, or if I'd heard a cover of it, years & years ago... Or if maybe it
closely resembles some other song from way back when... But it did seem
familiar, & I liked it.

----------------
It made the pop charts (barely) in August 1989. It got played a lot on the
NYC oldies station WCBS-FM. You know, you might have listened to the "Yo
Frankie" album at one time or another because Paul Simon provided backing
vocals on one of its songs ("Written On The Subway Wall," if memory serves).

I'm guessing I did hear it at some point...

> You know, you might have listened to the "Yo
> Frankie" album

I've been finding myself saying "Yo, Frankie!" to Mr. B&W Stray. <g> He's
such a macho looking cat, but with a softy personality, that I can see him
on a street corner, singing doo-wop, with some other cat guys. ;-)

Mr. B&W aka Butchie aka Francis aka Frankie got his booster shots today -
he's medically set for the next year until hsi next vax are due. And after
he left my house this afternoon, he strolled over to the neighbors' house;
he was there when I called to tell them I'd managed to keep him in last
night & get him to his vet appt. today. I just hope he stays away from
traffic - that's my main worry about him being outside.

Demelza's scheduled to get her fibrosarcoma regrowth removed next week:
we're going to try & 'chase' it as long as makes sense. The surgical
removal of the initial tumor barely fazed her, so for now it seems a
reasonable option.

> at one time or another because Paul Simon provided backing

Holy mackerel - but you really are an incredible fount of rock info!!
Funny - because when I saw that song's title listed for the album, I
thought "Sort of sounds like it could be a PS tune from his early-ish days".
;-)
