Is anyone familiar with this in other parts of the country? This is
the shelter where I got Fawn last Christmas, and I am so glad she is
with me and not exposed to this.

Nope, I hadn't heard about it. But both of my cats have their annual vet
appt. tomorrow & if it's also around here, she (the vet) may mention it.

I just had two cats in for checkups last week and this week and the vet
did not mention it. My cats are indoor cats, so hopefully safe if it
spreads to the East Coast.

Mine are too (indoor), but they go out onto the screened porch - which is
screened floor to ceiling. So if it's an airborne deal, the vet might
mention it to me. If it's in the area.

I know my vet pretty well - I think she'd actually take it upon herself
(it's a multi-vet practice) to give me a call & warn me off if she thought
there was a risk.
Besides, they're both due for their rabies shots, plus one of them has been
coughing/wheezing again; I would've made an appt,. for her anyway, even if
her annual hadn't been due.

I think I'd be inclined to call first and ask if they've heard of it.
Taking healthy cats into a vets office may not be a good idea if that
virus is in your area.

Parkdale is Fawn's vet. Chak, I am thinking along your lines, and am
going to wait out the panic first. Then I think I will have her
vaccinated because I am afraid other people in this complex are not
going to vaccinate their cats, and the most worrisome thing to me is
that the virus can be carried on clothing, hands, etc. In other words,
it's not my apartment that is a threat to Fawn as much as it is what I
might bring in from the common areas (computer, community rooms, etc).

Interesting article, but not much information. And the picture of that
worker is just silly. It's fine to wear a lab coat and gloves, but what
about her legs? Do none of the cats rub against her legs? And her
shoes? That picture is very misleading.

Exactly - it's not our cats who make us sick, but we who make our cats
sick.
The article mentioned that this has been going on for ten years, but it
wasn't clear whether they meant this particular virus or just incidents
like this with other viruses. And if it's the same virus, why haven't we
heard about it?

I agree. The shelter is also too small for serious isolation units.

In this county, because the Humane Society was keeping it quiet in
hopes of not causing a panic. They still haven't even bothered to
change their opening web page. Looks to all the world like cat
adoptions are just fine. I think when the dust settles they will have
some very unhappy vets and owners and donors to deal with.

I can (sort of) understand keeping a particular outbreak under wraps, but
why haven't we heard about this virus before? Maybe the article meant
that there have been outbreaks of other viruses.

I think from this article that what the Wisconsin shelter is talking
about is the appearance of virulent systemic feline calicivirus, a
mutation of the more common FCV. Incidentally, this outbreak is in the
West Bend area, about 30 miles north of Milwaukee. I am leaning toward
leaving well enough alone with Fawn since she is completely confined
to my apartment, she is approximately 7 years old and has no known
history of upper respiratory trouble.
