AAAAAAAIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

What _really_ hurts about these is (1) that anyone would actually
spend money on these, much less £1800, and (2) that two actresses
whose _work_ I admire, Paltrow and Thurman, are among the
purchasers - I credited them with more intelligence (if the
article is to be believed; when it comes to what celebrities do
and don't do, most of what is in print is questionable).

Bernardi clearly is a misogynist.

The sad thing is, foot binding was _done to_ women (usually by
their mothers, starting when they were young children). Western
women are actually paying for the privilege of doing this to
themselves.

Maybe the next fad will be embedding glass shards in the insoles,
to enhance that mincing gait that Bernardi (Jette's post) finds
so enchanting.

ay yi yi! & all the other sentiments already expressed. as a kid, i
always remember being baffled as to why women would choose to walk in
such things. then as a preteen i was alarmed that i was somehow
supposed to learn to partake in this ritual. relieved as an adult
that i can look at it as you all do & reiterate what susan says -
that's really stupid.

the binding of feet does always come to mind, but i forget about
furpaw's point - that binding was done to you without permission.

i understand the strangeness & stupidity of fashion, but someone share
with me why women wearing heels are more sexually desirable.

Maybe we have another poem in the making here:

When I am old I will wear comfortable shoes.
Ah hell, why wait until I am old?

(Those with a poetic gene could run with this. I'm lacking
in that department.)

An interesting sidelight, for me, is that many of the models were wearing
opaque pantyhose with their "creative" shoes. These are the only kind of
pantyhose I can tolerate wearing (they don't run easily, and they conceal my
nasty-looking spider veins). I'm encouraged to see they're making a

I'm not sure what those are, but they don't look like Frisbees to me.
I'm wondering if they are collapsable bags or something, you know, like
car shades on a thin wire frame that you can twist with some clever
wrist action into a small, storable packet?

I was told that wearing heels would thin my ankles and make my
calves a prettier shape. The pain would apparently be the price of
admission to men's company.

Works for me. ;-)

(actually, I don't wear _very_ high heels - but very flat ones make my
toes cramp as I try to keep them on)

I would never hurt myself like those women. But if you feel you just must
hurt yourself for fashion, shouldn't your stockings coordinate with the
shoes? What's with all the dark, heavy stocking with the very open and
light colored or colorful shoes?

If I'm going to spend money, give me SoftWalks
http://www.zappos.com/n/es/d/722462700/page/1.html (so comfortable and a
bargain compared to the other shoes, but still usually too high for me). My
last pair lasted over six years, but recently gave up the ghost. It's
going to be awhile before I can afford another pair (Spring+ car repair &
registration, taxes, lawn & garden expenses).

I gave up nylons about the same time I gave up heels. And those opaque
pantyhose do nothing for the shoes.

I mean, if they are supposed to be sexy, which I assume they are.

Speaking of which, most of the men I know laugh at shoes like that. I
really think the shoes are for other women to "envy."

I have noticed that the effect may work on younger women, but have noticed
too many hobbling, limping, bent-back older women. Somehow, it isn't sexy.
I thinkg the bent back and asymmetrical hips kind of destroy the shape of
the calves.

I'd rather *like* to be able to wear spike heels (say, 2 - 2½")
occasionally - when getting dressed up, but I just can't. My sense of
balance is lousy, & I can't walk in anything like that. I've been known to
slide sideways off my Dr. Scholl's - or any other slide sandal with a low
heel, for cryin' out loud! So I stick to no more than 1 ½" heels for dress
shoes, & even then, they can't even be "kitten" heels - the heel has to be
broad-based, to keep me from losing my balance, & to be able to walk with a
normal gait.

For everyday, I wear flat slip-ons in the winter (Naturalizers with flexible
rubber-like soles), & low sandals - usually slides - in the summer...

I identify!! The last cocktail-type, dress-up party I went to was in
December 2001. I had no problem finding a dress. I looked all over for a
less than 2 inch high, at least 1 inch (preferably two) diameter, black
dress up shoe with rounded toes (the pointy ones pinch-won't even buy flat
points-- and make my size 9 feet look humungus). I finally found one, but
it was cloth, which isn't great in the snow. I bought them anyway. Cloth
is better in snow than stillettos.

If you watch the TV shows where women are wearing the spikes, you will
notice they all walk bent at the knee...not attractive at all. Now I know
this sounds old fashion but my Mother taught my sisters and I how to walk
straight in heels and to walk with one foot in front of another. There is
nothing so unattractive as a woman that walks in heels with her legs
spread...if you get a chance watch tv you will see what I mean. After all of
the "Lady" stuff my Mother taught me , I don't wear heels and when I did
they were 2 inches at the most...in my younger years...then I decided to go
for comfort...so out the door the heels went and I am 5' something...and
short I shall stay ...at least my feet won't hurt

I read somewhere that women dress to impress other women..not men. Men are
happy with big boobs and big butts...LOL.

I mean, if they are supposed to be sexy, which I assume they are.

Speaking of which, most of the men I know laugh at shoes like that. I
really think the shoes are for other women to "envy."

Years ago my principal wore tall spike heels - she always dressed to the
nines, & my presnet principal wears them, too. And neither seem(ed) to have
any trouble walking up & down the school halls umpteen times/day. How they
can do it is beyond me!

BTDT, re: fine w/the dress, now need a pair of shoes! Last time, I wound up
ordering them from... Shoemall or Zappos - the internet, at any rate. Found
1.5" dressy heels, in my size. Actually, I buy all of my shoes via the
internet (often Maryland Sq.) - can virtually never find 9.5 or 10 W or WW
in stores! (And you thought you have big feet...<g>)

That brings to mind the S & M issue of tall spike heels, especially
black ones. It's understandable that they'd appeal to a principal.
You'd have to master the appropriate power walk to go along with them,
which some men would find sexy.

I wore 3" heels in high school, but dropped to 2" in
college, and then to lower and lower stacks, and finally to
nothing higher than an 1" around 15 years ago. I don't know
how I could tolerate the high spike heels - and they did
leave me with a couple of bunions on my little toes.

I had a friend who wore 2.5" heels when running a booth at a
trade show. As I grimaced in empathic pain, she assured me
that they were perfectly comfortable. After she hit 40 she
got an epiphany, I guess, because then she said she owned
only athletic shoes, easy spirit flats and birkenstocks and
wouldn't consider wearing anything else.

I wear Dansko clogs mostly, they make shiny versions for dress-up!
Life is too short to wear uncomfortble shoes (or drink bad wine!)

And this is why we will never have a woman President of the United
States. We can't get over ourselves. Menopause is not a disease,
it's supposed to happen. What you do with it is up to you. However
heinous your life before was. Shut up

Yeah, me too, never wore flats till my late 30s, used to walk across the
Brooklyn Bridge in spike heels when I was young. I really do mourn the loss
of my ability to wear those pretty little shoes of my youth, but it's just
too painful now. Can't wear *any* clothes that hurt any more.
