| | | OT: Gas Prices OK, once again, you guys over in Europe, how much do you pay for a
gallon of gas? I just paid $3.50 a gallon and I am feeling weak in
the knees.
It could be worse, I guess. I just sold the big truck I had and bought
a minivan that is getting 28 mpg. The truck got 15 mpg. So, I traded
gas purchases for car payments, and I still think its cheaper!
And do you pay by the liter or gallon?

That's all??
Our prices (here in the Midwest) went up yesterday to $3.74 a gallon.

Northern NM - local station was $3.59 last night. I haven't
checked this morning...
Are you seeing a lot of variation in prices among stations? We
do, usually over about a 20-cents per gallon range, over the 100
mile, 4 town corridor that I occasionally drive. Where I live
prices are usually about in the middle of the range.

You're reacting because the US has consistently had cheaper gas, and now
that price is going up very quickly. Doesn't matter what the rest of us
pay; we've always paid more and so we don't think about it. (Norwegians
certainly aren't discussing the matter much.)

In Europe, it's by the liter, which is 3.75 US gallons. Gas prices have
been going up here, too, but not as much as in the US. Current price in
Norway is about NOK 12.75 per liter, which at the current exchange rate
is USD 2.49, making our gallon price USD 9.34.
I know your jaw is on the floor now, but you may as well pick it back
up. You know why our gas prices are so high? It helps pay for
nationalized health care.

By the litre in the UK. Prices here in Scotland are currently going
wild, with the upcoming strike at the refinery at Grangemouth, but
when I filled up earlier this week it was 1.06 per litre. With a
strike looming many people are panicking and filling up, topping up
when they don't need to, filling jerry cans, etc, and the petrol
stations are cashing in on this - I heard of one place in Fife (just
across the river from me) charging 1.45 per litre for fuel.

That's a good use... I've long thought that the US should follow
Europe's lead and impose high taxes on gasoline - but the
increase should be gradual, not rapid, and the rapid increase is
what's causing the panic. If not paying for health care, taxes
could pay for maintenance of roads and bridges, which are rapidly
falling into disrepair.
Instead, prices have been kept artificially low by tax breaks
given to the oil companies, while the oil companies reap record
profits. Stupid!

In the Netherlands we pay 1 euro 53 per liter - that's almost $2,39. http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi
Not sure how much a gallon is.
But hey, your dollar is incredibly low - not so long ago 1 euro was
worth less than a dollar, look at it now!

What ticks me off is that in our town, we have one person who owns a
string of stations and who keeps the price high. If you don't mind
driving to another part of town (and to a station he doesn't own) you
can find gas for about 10 cents cheaper. I hate it when someone like
that keeps the price high for his own pockets.
I wouldn't mind (as Keera Ann said) if the price of the gas went to
pay for National Health. Here, the gas prices cover the yachts,
bonus, perks, etc. of the CEOs of oil companies. Thank goodness that
the two oilmen in the White House won't be there much longer. |

I got gas on the way home from work this afternoon; $3.69/gallon.
AFAIK, the Europeans (incl. the UK) have been paying $5.00 & over for
years... they have way more tax added in.
Part of me thinks the higher price of gas here may actually be a good
thing - even if it went up to $5/gallon: to eventually force the car
manufacturers to get into gear & make cars which get more MPG, & to force
the public to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles Vs. mammoth SUVs that most of
them don't have a real need for anyway. The other part of me doesn't want
to spend so much on gas. ;-)

That's why I mentioned it. It is so easy to be shocked at things like a
sales tax well over 15% or high income tax or high gas prices here in
Europe, so I thought I'd mention one big reason why that is. And
honestly, I'd rather pay more in taxes and always get health care rather
than risk rejection from some insurance company even if I can afford the
premium.

Oh, roads can fall into disrepair anyway. But in our case, not at the
expense of health care.

Yes, that has always been the problem. Had the US not subsidized oil,
Americans would have been driving far more fuel-efficient cars years
ago.

HOLY SHIT! 12.75 L ???
We in Toronto area are paying about 1.20/L and bitchin about it and like you
about 50 % goes to taxes which partially supports our healthcare. No
complaints there though after hearing about the $$$$$ that Americans have to
pay for healthcare. We just walk out of doctors offices and hospitals

I wish it would go higher over here, then maybe we'd get some really
small cars, and there'd be fewer of those monsters on the street. I
just don't understand someone driving along by themselves in a huge SUV
-- driving on a bus route!
There are people at my church, which is located at the connection of
three different subway lines, who complain because we don't have
parking. Boggles my mind.
If gas would go high enough to get some sensibly-sized efficient cars on
the US market, I might actually buy one for when I want to go out of
town to where the buses and trains don't go (any more).

So is the UK.
Most of the price of gas/petrol at the pumps is government tax.

Yes, yes and yes.
Norway has always had higher oil prices than other nations. Always.
Drives the Norwegians batty, but it was a policy chosen "back when" to
help bring the country out of poverty. However, it is not more
_expensive_ than in other countries, because Norwegians actually pay
less out of their paycheck for gas than other nations do. (IOW, we're no
longer poor.)

Here in Oroville (northern) California, the cheapest in town is $3.85/
gallon. It's always higher in San Francisco; must be up to $4 there
by now. As a staunch environmentalist, I've always welcomed price
increases. Yes it hurts poor people, but hey, we've always been way
below the poverty line and I'm still glad gas costs so much.
So far, no one I know has reduced the size of their vehicle or the
amount of joy-riding they do because of gas prices.

Those are still bigger than I really need.

I'd really like one of those. Small, easy to park, they stand up very
well in the crash tests and plenty big enough for me and any junk I'd
normally want to carry around.

Most gas stations aren't making that much profit off the price
increases - except the ones who have a local monopoly. I'd drive
out of my way to avoid getting gas at his stations, too.
There's one gas station out of 9 in our town of 20,000 that
consistently charges 5-10 cents/gallon more than the others. The
funny thing is, it's on the main drag, within half a mile of two
others. I can't understand why anyone would buy gas there -
maybe they think that more expensive is better??? - or how it
manages to stay open.

They can't leave soon enough for me! (And that will mean that
this unbelievably long and disgustingly acrimonious election is
FINALLY over.)

And there are EU rules. The Hetherlands do have natural gas but we
have to follow the international oil-prices.

Looks just about ideal. What's an "automated manual transmission"
though? How can it be automated if it's manual? I learned on a stick,
but I'd rather not have to drive one.

did not know that. can't imagine traveling too far around here on a
vespa, even when not dancing on the handlebars. not only due to the
land use patterns, but also due to the still high number of enormous
vehicles. still makes driving little things kind of scary.
